  • ‪@MakeGold‬ Smelting of rare antique gold. The process of refining gold to remove any impurities that may be found intermixed with the noble metal is an ancient practice that has long been employed by diverse cultures. One of the earliest gold refining equipments employed by ancient metallurgists was the blast furnace - by then a rudimentary structure built with clay, stone, or roughly hewn rocks which were fed with wood or an assortment of biofuels derived from the dried fecal matter of animals. The blast furnace was used in tandem with the crucible, one of the oldest and perhaps still widely used metallurgical instruments to this day. With the methods of gold refining being perfected through the decades, even rustic objects such as clay pots and later on, cast iron equipment were employed in the quest for purer and finer examples of gold.

    Gold Smelting
Gold is purified by means of a smelting process, which utilizes pressure, high heat and chemicals to accomplish the task. Like any metal that appears naturally in the earth, there are impurities that must be removed. Removing minerals and other impurities allows gold to be used in its purest form, which is necessary in many applications, particularly in jewelry and electronics. Gold is utilized frequently for electronic applications because it does not tarnish or rust over time.
    Smelting
Smelting is a way of obtaining metals from a mineral-bearing ore and dates back to pre-historic times. It usually involves the reduction (reduction reactions are those which take electrons from elements, reduction being the opposite of oxidizing reactions) of metal oxides (the ore) to metal and the formation of non-metal oxide waste known as slag. It is a chemical process and does not simply involve melting the gold. It sounds like alchemy, and it almost is.

The ore is smelted with lead oxide from previous operations, then subjected to cupellation, chemical treatment with acids and smelting. Repeated cupellation minimizes the expense of reagents in chemical operations.
The final product of this process must be electrolyzed to reach the maximum degree of purity.
Much of what I know I learned here on this channel. Thanks for the videos.

I like this video a lot (although I also question "ancient" in the title), but I really wish there was some subtitles or something to point out what's actually happening. It's a bit hard to follow when you don't even know what materials they're using. :)

They are basically doing the same thing that sreetips does in his videos. Enquart gold (3 parts lead 1 part gold). melt mixture. pour off into bucket to make little chunks of it (for easier dissolving in the next step) . Dissolve the lead out of the pieces by using nitric acid ammonia and other chemicals at around 6:45 the chlorine gasses are flying up because of the reaction . don't really wanna breathe that in. They are left with pure gold dust after that step. they then take the dust and melt it into a bar of presumed high purity.

Thanks, good video and informative. I sit and read all the comment's, so many ignorant people. I think people look to say negative thing's just to say something. That gold button is worth a couple thousand dollars. In the USA a $1 buys nothing, in other countries it feeds a family for a couple days. If there is a step you dont understand look it up. All the chemicals used have been around, forever. Again Thank you.

Primary smelt followed by cupelling then acid separation.
Cupelling is the process of using lead to gather gold and silver from the raw ore in the first smelt.
Tiny beads of precious metal don't always fall to the bottom of the pot or stick together; lead soaks them all up.
Heating the lead/gold/silver mixture in a cupell (the flat looking crucible) causes the lead to oxidize and be absorbed by the porous crucible.
The leaves mixed gold, silver and other metals which are separated by a nitric acid wash.
The blue-green color in the acid wash is copper; dissolved silver is clear.
This leaves a fine gold powder behind, which can be very pure; 99.9% or better.
The nitric acid can be recovered, the lead can be recycled as lead ore.
Much cleaner process than it sounds.
