    100% truly 🇧🇮 English language must be obligated in education system

      Now the word "obligated is super controversial"

      I got my secondary school education at College Don Bosco (now called Lycee de Burengo in Ngozi, northern Burundi) from 1964 to 1971 and even then, we had about 30-45 minutes of English per week. Today they try to teach English in primary schools.
      Today you have hundreds of Burundians who studied in French in Burundi and then did/do their graduate studies in the United States.
      I personally know French-speaking Rwandese, Ivorians, Congolese, Algerians, Guineans, Central Africans who were in graduate schools in USA.
      The Democratic Republic of Congo -DRC has the largest French-speaking population and after it joined the the East African Community-EAC in 2022?, French language is accepted as one of the official languages of the organization.
      The Burundian education system gets some support from Belgium, France and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF).
      Even Rwanda reintroduced the French language in its education system, THE GIANT FRENCH-SPEAKING CONGO IS JUST NEXT DOOR (of both Rwanda and Burundi).

    It starts with the children. Make it mandatory in early education. Kids pick up on languages more quickly. In 30 years a large percentage of the people will be speaking English as a second language.

    The problem is not the frensh language. A lot of people do speak it. But it's a problem not to speak english. Ever if the frensh pretent not to speak english - they do speak it very well. I'm german working in the IT and my daily business is to check for information on the internet. All in english, it does not mattter if the author is chinese, frensh, from northern europe or USA/Can. So I agree, if you cannot establish an educational system in which everybody learns english, a switch to english as an offical language would make sense.

      Using French isn't the issue at hand. The problem is adapting a language that is beneficial. And yes, only 3 countries of major influence use French. And those three aren't even world leading economies.

    France is the biggest travel destination and the French are the worse at English thus I don't agree with you
    Regional integration has been done in the EU without it being united by a common language, check the Suiss, well integrated but no common language.
    However when it comes to educational purposes, I'm all in with you.
    However especially at masters level, one thing that holds many down is the grading system at the University of Burundi, you can't expect scholarship when the top scorer beary reaches the 70% whereas elsewhere they readily reach the 80, and it's not that they are brighter

    • @NotSoBurundian
      @NotSoBurundian  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thats a point I had forgotten to mention. That language doesn't matter when you're already established as a favourite touristic destination. But when you're building from scratch, without any known famous touristic attractions and happen to be a small economy, then language does play a huge role when it comes to initial attraction.
