What's your favorite song from Heartworn Highways?

Well considering I can't watch Waitin round to die without crying, I'd have to go with Mercenary Song by Steve Earle but That old time feeling with Steve Young on guitar is crazy good too. I really don't know man. I love all of them!

Pancho & Lefty. First time I heard it or Townes was from Heartworn Highways. And Heartworn Highways brought me to Otis, who took me to Guy Clark, Jerry Lee, Blaze Foley, and a whole lot more electrifying music. Thank you Otis for that.

Mercenary Song, Cpt. Flint and Waiting Around to Die, One for the One by Hiatt was cool to see. … I was playing Mercenary Song for a friend the other night and my cousin tapped him in the shoulder, gestured my direction and said “Listen to this song!… listen to this song.”
We had a good inside joke moment! ;)

That scene with Uncle Seymour crying to Townes' "Waiting Around to Die" is one of the greatest things ever recorded. Looove that scene, so heavy.

YES! FINALLY! Heartworn highways is my favorite documentary and one of my favorite films. I first watched it in September of 2021 because I knew about Townes and loved his music and after watching it I discovered Guy Clark, Steve Earle, and Steve Young, who I listen to constantly. Thanks for the upload!

Funny story... during lockdown I stumbled upon an incredible interview with Mr. Lomax, and I thought to myself, I have to send this to my friend Joe Madden, he would just thoroughly enjoy this guy and everything he does! It took awhile to find Joe’s contact information because my phone malfunctioned & I was never able to find that interview again. Long story, but I heard from Joe last summer & as I was about to relay the interview, I could not recall Mr. Lomax’s name, but it’s one of those that if I hear it, I’ll recognize it. We had been talking about Blaze, then he said he used to hang with Townes, John & the rest of the Lomax’s in Houston. I was like, HOLY SHHHHHH!! That’s him! JOHN LOMAX IS THE GUY!
Known Joe 30 years, known him to play some Townes’ on guitar, but never once heard him speak of him until then. And probably would never have, if not for Mr. Gibbs & his awesome channel.
    I owes, you, Ottis!

I was actually thinking the other day about asking you for some book suggestions on country music history. Also, I’m always down a classic soul/funk/r&b rabbit hole. Keep up that great work man.

I just discovered Heartworn Highways last summer, after hearing the respective version of "Waitin' Aound to Die" in the background of a video on Townes Van Zant; and been listening to the soundtrack constantly since then. "Waitin' Around to Die", "Old Time Feeling", and "I Still Sing the Old Songs" are my top three from the film.

Oh, excellent, thank you. Spent hours on the Heartworn Highways two nights ago, looking at those singers, so young. Lots of great info in the comments, too. I think Desperadoes Waiting on a Train was my favourite.
Townes had a way of singing, where his voice matches the lyrics to his playing so poignantly, though.
The world could use a lot more stories from John Lomax3. He must have witnessed a lot of good, bad, and ugly from the lifestyle some of those guys were living at that particular point in time.

Great stuff. I discovered Heartworn Highways trading bootleg tapes right around 2000. Just blown away of course. It was re-released on DVD not too long after that. In the same trade I got another Doc. that should be re-released for sure, The Other Side Of Nashville. Filmed in 82 or 83 and released on VHS in 84.
