I just bought return of the lazy dungeon master because of Bob, it's amazing, thank you so much for helping me get over my perfectionism when creating adventures. Now my party might complain less that I take too long to create content ♥
I run a D&D club for my local school district and I DM several annual campaigns for middle and high students. I had been stocking copies of the core 5e manuals to check out to students, including those who want to run their own campaigns. I like the Lazy Dungeon Master so well, I think I will start stocking extra copies to loan out instead of the official 5e DM book. I will also be recommending your videos to my students starting next season!
As a new DM, I've seen *tons* of videos on DMing and this style of video is honestly the most helpful - definitely be picking up Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master when finances permit; thanks!
I have Sly Flourishs' book and I am pretty sure that 'secrets and clues' is one of his most important concepts. Still, I am eager to see the upcoming gameplay!
It definitely is haha, luckily this is a mystery one-shot, so there was no need for over arching plot threads and the "secrets" were really just the plot of this quest :P --and the session was really fun anyway!
BOB! I’ve always been searching for the full process: planning through to gameplay. THANK YOU for sharing your process and making use of sly’s tools. So so so helpful I’d love to hear a debrief AFTER the session with your thoughts on how the session went too.
You are so welcome! And you're the second to suggest a postgame debrief so I might just have to do that! If not for this exact session, I will do it for another set of prep and gameplay in the future
@@BobWorldBuilder awesome!! I've always loved that sly flourish does prep videos, but we never get to see the outcome. Seeing the before during and after will be such a great package. Maybe the debrief can be a live Q&A?
Sly flourish's books have always been a great help, going back to the original Lazy DM book. His Lazy DM's Workbook is an incredible resource, WotC should've come up with something like it a long time ago. His Fantastic Locations and Fantastic Adventures have also been great and I used both in my campaigns over the years.
Love the little side comments to yourself haha This was really useful! Nice to see how to 'translate' the adventure as written into the main plot points and how to scrap or adapt things!
Hey Bob! Seeing your process really helped me prep my game for this weekend. Will you ever do more of these? It would be really great to see you break down how to prep different kinds of adventures.
Haha, new camera new me :) There will be some changes in the next few videos because I am still toying around with the new set up, but I think this first arrangement has been the best with the new gear.
You could add a subtitle to this video that says, How 5e designs adventures ti fill time and meet their "Number of Encounters in the day" quota without making them relevant.
Yeah I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt and blame the "disconnect" on my quick read of the module, but even that would point to the writing not being clear enough for easy prep soooo... I think you're right :P
I would probably leave the spiders. I agree they’re not relevant to the quest, but any outdoor campaign without random natural creatures protecting their space or hunting for food strikes me as to unnatural. They don’t necessarily have to be blocking the path and a forced fight, but natural encounters should be an option in natural settings.
So, missing secrets and clues seems bad since it is called out in the lazy DM as the most important thing in the entire book... BUUUUT since you're doing a one shot with no need to seed clues for an overarching narrative, it seems like reviewing your characters will probably be enough in this case.
Yeah, I think the reason I overlooked it is that the adventure is already a mystery, so the very story of this one shot is kinda supposed to be the secret. Not that it turned out to be a big reveal anyway because my players sorta knew what the adventure was about, but the session was still tons of fun! :D
Do you find it better/easier/funner to run for two people instead of 4-5? I ask because that is the direction I was thinking about going in my future adventures.

SECRETS AND CLUES, BOB!! Where are the secrets?? =D Thank you so much for the awesome video!
As another user (more clever than I) said in these comments "even the secrets are secret!"

@@Labroidas Awesome!! Hope you dig it!
@@BobWorldBuilder I assumed the mysterious red lights was the secret.
I love that Sly came by, watched your video and commented. Mr. Shea you are a rockstar.
You are the Bob Ross of DnD commentary.
Happy little scenes!
Came to the comments with this exact idea in mind. Feels so cozy and nice.
You're going to freaking love a video I have coming up xD
@@minicarbonara Heh! Glad to see others feeling the same relaxing vibes \m/

I whole heartedly agree that lazy prep is the way to go! Don't stress over prepping too much, just go with the flow and have a great time!
Bingo! 😎
Im thinking about running a game for the first time soon. This method of prep seems right up my alley, especially for a first timer!
That's great to hear! Run that game!!
Loved this video format! Could watch Bob prepping for hours.
I'm happy to hear that! It is something I do every week so maybe I could turn that time into more videos :)
I would love to see you use some of the newer Lazy DM materials like the companion and workbook for a similar session prep style video!

Good to know! I've been thinking about picking up his Grendleroot book, but I need more time to play/run dnd!!
Amazing content! Super Helpful for a DM beginner like me, we usually spend too much time on unimportant stuff. Hope session video come out soon!
That's very kind of you! Glad it was helpful, and the gameplay will be coming this Saturday at 10 AM Eastern US time
Bob's content is a superfood. Packed with nutrients for your DM brain.
Hahah you're too kind!
Hi Bob! Loving your videos. It would be great if you could do a Lazy DM guide in combination with the latest Phandelver.
Love the little side comments to yourself haha

Thank you! It's hard not to critique myself in the editing process lol, and I'm glad you found this useful :)
He kept his secrets secret. Of course he did. :)
Yeahhhh, 100% intentional. Totally. Yes.
I'm playing a oneshot tonight and this saved me so much time! Thank you for the great content as always!
Happy to help! :D

I'm a big fan of the lazy dm. Keep up the informative videos.

Great video, love the way you stream lines it. I also use the lazy dm book!!
It's my new favorite DM tool!
I would love to see a take on a published adventure like this using Sly's book where less parts of it are taken out of the original.
Thanks! Yeah I may do more videos like this
Great stuff Bob! Got the booklet and I use it quite often. Should I get the workbook aswell? Cheers from Holland dear Sir!
In my completely objective opinion, you should!
@@SlyFlourish very impartial! :)
@@SlyFlourish I see what you did there :D
I don't have it, but I've heard good things about it. If it's like Sly's other products, it's probably worth the investment

Secrets and clues are the part i struggle with the most -_-
You forgot the most important part: Secrets & Clues.
Yep xD Fortunately it's sort of a mystery quest so the secrets are already in there!

no... my arch rival!

It kinda depends on the players. If the two people work together well, yes. If not, a bigger group size could help
