- I check out this fantastic Garrard Auto Turntable Type A. I've never seen one before so I expect this to be an interesting journey. The condition is very good except for extensive surface corrosion and dried up lubrication.
I restored my TYPE A a couple of years ago. There are a great turntable for the period they were made and superb for replaying LPs from the 60's especially. Once restored they are a wonder to behold. A vid of my Type A is on my channel. Great videos Jim !

Mine is still in the box it came in from the UK, claim is the seven pound turntable. Uses a rubber band pulley drive that is worn out. Never played in it auto mode, dropping a six buck LP that was the charge for one in 1959 would enlarge the whole. Was going to rebuild it, what a waste of time. Went from LP's to Reel to Reel, to 8-Track, that didn't last long to cassettes, to CD's, now to MP3's, can put over 4,000 classical music songs on a 16GB USB stick.
The days of having cassettes and CD's all over my cars floor is finally history. If you want my Garrard you can have it.
Or all that metal was cadmium plated and thats starting to fall off. The other possibility was the turntable was operating at line potential, and all the metal became a "sacrificial anode" in an electrolysis process of a very humid environment. Both being true in a basement.
All that corrosion looks like one of the frozen ice scenes of Siberia from Dr. Zhivago!

That triangle on the gray part lines up with a corresponding arrow on the black turntable that seems to be missing on yours. I assumed its for balance.
Magnavox changers use the front end of the tonearm to detect the size[s] the record[s]

I have a couple of these. One of them will select 7" records just fine but will not select 12" records. It seems to go to the 10" position from what I can tell. I haven't been able to figure it out. Do you have any ideas or suggestions? Any help from you or anyone else reading this would be really appreciated.
I was given one of these, but it is missing the short spindle, and I cannot get the long spindle out. It also has a bad motor mount. Are parts available? It needs a good cleaning as it has spent the last 40 years in a garage.
There are parts available. I find a lot of parts on ebay. Also, check "The Voice of Music.com" They provide rebuilt idler wheels and I believe other parts for this and many other turntables.
Hi Jim, I love your video(s)... I have just inherited this turntable and its currently sitting inside a Deilcraft cabinet, but I've no idea how to remove it to bring it in for repair/servicing....any ideas?...I've not found any info online. Thanks!
Hey, did you ever get the turntable out of the cabinet? I have a similar that I just figured out how to get out today if you are still wondering.
I had one last year, the tone arm was a mess. I got rid of it, too many issues.

there is a 45 adapter that stacks them and drops them from the 45 stacking spindle and the size detector tells the size of the record and the adapter does all the dropping funtion vintage is the best new crap like crosley and any company making all in one are garbage and the companies should be closed they all suck
I recall a big Admiral console in 60's. The tone arm itself would swing up and over to determine record size.
the modern turntables of today are crap made by crosley and other cheap companies anyone that would produce an all in one is a crappy company the best kind of audio is the type with components or individual pieces
