Your Orchids are beautiful Ken. For some reason, I can't seem to grow them. My brother and his wife are big fans of Orchids and have several and they gave me another one to try but that's now on its last legs. I think I kill them with kindness! Your house is lovely Ken and you have wonderful views of your roses. I was at the garden centre this morning and almost bought Bring Me Sunshine and Elizabeth but I resisted as I really don't have the room in my garden. I'll be ripping out the summer bedding soon as some of it is looking tired but the gaps they leave won't be big enough for a rose. Toying with the idea of creating a new border next year but that'll mean extra work and you know yourself how much time our beloved roses take up. We're constantly deadheading, feeding and sweeping up the petals. Thanks for the garden tour. You still have plenty of colour which is what us gardeners like to see. Take care.

Hi Wendy, what a lovely phrase you use” kill with kindness “ I’ve killed many in the past and replace whatever i killed. Orchids are more delicate and needs even more care. I remember back in the days when I had over 30 orchids. whenever I water them, my bath tubs was filled with orchids. Having a passion for roses gives us great pleasure, but they can be expensive when you start buying fertilisers and spend numerous hours deadheading. I think you’re as crazy as me🤪 I just remembered you went and bought 4 roses only couple weeks ago.

Hi Ken, your orchids are beautiful ! They must be very happy blooming for such a long time, how wonderful. Thank you for showing us your beloved orchids and your home I love how your garden and your home all work so well together. Your pergola is a great addition. Your roses are looking so colourful and I bet the scent is fabulous. I'm so happy Penelope Lively is behaving a bit better for you, the pruning obviously did the trick. Thanks for the tour, take care.

@@soulgirlktf Oh thanks Linda, you and I have been so quiet lately. Finding anything of interest is so difficult as we’re nearing the end of our rose season. Yes giving Penelope a harder prune has made a big difference, some of her canes are now more sturdy. Perhaps me and you could squeeze a couple more videos before the season ends.

Ken your orchids are amazing. I had one that flowered on and off for over a year but I'd pruned it to the base. Completely the wrong place to prune obviously but it did come back haha. I had a little giggle at your commentary on the tile cleaner 😅. It's not funny at all really, but how you just came out and said it so calmly was quite amusing especially when you elaborated on the words "tile cleaner!" Omg I'd have definitely had the divorce papers ready haha. I hope it recovers next year with new leaves ken.

@@davenadainton4209 Hi Davena, yes those orchids are no doubt amazing in many way. I never prune them right to the bottom in case there side shoots. Sometimes by removing the white film where the buds are can also tease it to sprout a new stem. Yeah I’d used an empty bottle and filled it with tile cleaner which I marked with permanent marker. I suppose not entirely her fault. Dead lemon tree isn’t a bad thing of course because I wouldn’t have to bring it indoors over winter 🥶 that said I’d still be gutted if it did die 💀

Another lovely video of your garden and house Ken. The Orchids look amazing - such vibrant colours. We have one Orchid that looks like your pink/purple one. My wife looks after it and it's been with us for a few years now. It's flowering at the moment and when it's finished perhaps we won't prune the stem back too hard this time. The roses still look amazing to me and I love looking at them. Oh dear! The poor Lemon Tree. Accidents do happen sadly. Cheers! P.

@@peterhaymaker7562 Thank you Peter, it was my pleasure to feature something different other than roses. Yes try not to prune your orchids right down. Ken, your orchids are beautiful and amazing blooms lasting over two years. I have just one orchid plant similar to first one in your video. What is your experience of J L Austin rose, a good repeat bloomer, compared with Gabriel Oak? Thanks for sharing beautiful orchids and your lovely house.

@@Raj-hk5hg Hi Raj, very difficult to pick one over the other. Both are great at repeat flowering and very similar in colour. But if I had to choose 1 , it would be James L Austin. Because Jame Austin has more upright growth and less prone to disease. Gabriel tends to produce oddly canes which bends and little floppy. I’d have both if you’ve got the space 😝

I have a Blush Noisette in a 50 litre pot just outside our patio door, and am enjoying looking at it at this very moment. Although it's meant to be a climber, mine hasn't shown much inclination to climb very strongly over the past two years, but I am cutting it back when it does! So I am left with a small bush 30 inches tall by 30 wide which gets covered with flowers when it flushes, but with the weather this year it hasn't been flushing that often. It does, for me, have a pleasant strong fragrance.

You are such a pessimist Ken! It's not late in the season at all - I was posting videos of roses in November last year (and some covered in ice crystals in December)! OK, our (not so) glorious summer seems to be on its way out, but roses are pretty hardy plants - I'm sure you will get to see those Emily Bronte blooms fully open and probably many more too! I would be more hopeful about the lemon tree as well - maybe it's just the leaves that are going to drop off? My wife always accuses me of being a pessimistic glass half-empty person while she is an optimistic glass half full person - you seem to be a the glass has cracked and the contents are emptying out person! Anyway, I love the way you can enjoy your garden from inside the house, and the garden is looking very neat, tidy and colourful. That James L. Austin seems to be glowing with colour, and a lot of your other roses are putting on a great show. A couple of questions - Gardener Ben says Bring Me Sunshine needs to be grown on a support - do you agree? Also I remember you have a Meteor in your front garden - mine is in its first summer and I think the flowers are an ugly mess in shape and colour - I assume yours looks better? I am wondering whether to dump it and make space for something I appreciate more, but thought maybe it's just been a bad year for it and it may improve? See? - that's me being optimistic! Now, sing along with me, first of all that Monty Python song - "Always look on the bright side of life ..." followed by Morecombe and Wise's "Bring me sunshine ..."

@@nikkonch 😂🤗😃😂 you sure do make me laugh 😆 Nik. I’m cheerful already. I think it’s because your garden looks so much greener and colourful to my dull and dying. Perhaps you are right, I do feel half empty and broken 😞 I could really do with some positive energy. I had chap asking me to compare James Austin versus Gabriel. I know you have Gabriel in your garden Nik and praise it. My answer would be James L Austin as my choice and not by much.
Meteor have impressed me a lot, the colour is very mish mash. I prefer it to many of my roses for its unique colour and lasting blooms. I have 2 BMS, one in the pot which doesn’t need support and the one grown in the ground happily supports itself. from experience, two same rose can behave differently even though 1 is at front and other at the back . I think you should refer this question to Gavin because his BMS is more established.

@@kenvoong5977 I placed 1 support right in the middle of BMS and tied some of the stems to this. The sheer number of flowers (100) obviously weigh down on some stems so support is a good idea. I find these Green Supports (with steel inside the plastic? ) at Garden Centres well worth buying. Pack of 6 for around £8 ?
