At the point of contact with the ball he could steer the ball with his wrists to covers or extra cover which kept fielder guessing . Keeping a field to him was impossible when he got going say top playerslike warne, gower,gooch,atherton, imran khan ,Allan border,Ian chappel ,murlitharan among others. Azhars paddle sweeps to spinners reminded of another great colin cowdery. Azhar was a genius in timing and placement. There was no better olayer than azhar in olaying swing and spin. His offshore hundered were usually filled with fours on the offside with squarecuts,coverdrives and lofted shots over long on and long offs. 115 capetown,106adelaide,109Faisalabad, 103wellington, 178 oval,121lords,192Auckland were masterly knocks. His ability against spin attack of murlitharan was superb 108 and126 in Columbo were artistic. Only one batsman was better than azhar in india between 1985 and 2000-Sachin. Nobody else.

For me one of the best innings played against Australia in tests. Australia were better in the 90s imo and it was a harder era. What really pushes it into the top 10 for me, is Azhar was a genius to watch with those wrists. Of all the Indian batsman I've seen he was the most elegant and best to watch. This matched proved it, sidhu, Sachin, gabguly and Vvs all performed but Azhar outshone them all
That was a poor Aussie side but regardless Azhar is class.
Apart from Rahul Dravid, Sachin n Sourav liked Azharuddin much,,, batting against worlds one of the finest pace n spin attack is really a matter of joy...

Azhar played great for non fixed matches. But thats only few matches though. He used to give catch practice to slip fielders and Wkt keeper.
These clips bring us many pleasant memories. Modern bats and practising with bowling machines are killing the romance of batsmanship. When ill-timed punches carry for 6 over shortened boundaries, why bother with stroking or timing the ball?

I could remember this was the first time i saw a captain declaring while playing in pitch.
Before that time i saw captains declaring innings from the pavilion. At first I wasn't able to understand what he was signaling and why the wicket keeper was shaking hands with him. But later it was came to know that he declared the innings with 400 lead.
