i know when i got into punk and hardcore back in 1982, actually 81 when i made a trip back to W. Berlin, E. Germany... but by 82, i was hanging out at CBGBs on a regular basis along with Ratcage Records, and various other places... But only a couple of years later... the jocks came in and took over and that was it for me.... Punk to me meant being different but more importantly being your own self. Some bands i liked. in real time: Crass, UK Subs, Reagan Youth. The False Prophets, Flipper, Black Flag, Dwad Kennedys... Bands i played in: Adam 12 NYC, Official Hooligans Connecticut Third Uncle NYC Bands i like today: pretty much what Kira said. I'm now almost 59 years old yet i still maintain the same attitude that i had when i was 18. punk is about making your own choices for your own self. do what you want to do. be what you wanr to be. never conform !! Anarchy peace LOVE and freedom.
She's got such a good point. Spirit trumps style when it come to punk. Spirit has a timeless voice and can live on in many forms. But style isn't always timeless. Style becomes conformity the minute it becomes trendy. This is why Black Flag didn't stick with the same exact formula on every record.
Sometimes having a consistent style/sound isn't a bad thing though even when a band has done it to death for years and people think it's overdone. For example, I love Green Day. Still do even though their style and sound is something they've flogged to absolute death since the bloody 1980s!
hear me out... as a long time punk in punk bands since 1997... the new conformity is wokeness & internet obsession... so the new 'punk' in being post/beyond woke and post/beyond internet... and dare i say.... the new 'punk' might also be about getting closer to God
Punk is about conformity. They conform on what clothes to wear, what color to dye your hair, which politicians you should hate and which you should ignore. Lots of "punk" bands were requiring their audience to get a rushed and highly politicized mRNA vaccine in order to see them live, a vaccine which btw did not prevent transmission or infection and could very likely be causing heart issues now and well into the future. They could have fought back against that rule like many bands/comedians did, it would have been a "punk" thing to do, but they didn't. Punk is an establishment thing now and has been for many years.
wish i could disagree but you're 100% right man its a shame i got to the punk scene late an was hoping to meet cool people but just ran into the same types of people you meet in every other scene obsessed with how you look an to have a free thought in your head was treated as a sin to this day i decided not to get any tattoos just to be more like me an less like those punks even though i always thought tattoos an stuff was cool
you hit the nail on the head!!!! the vaccine push really showed us who was truly anti-conformity... it also showed me the strange connection with wokeness & conformity... totally a weird flip
