Something hard to explain to those who haven't dived in yet:
      *There aren't enough episodes.*
Unless you're someone who truly doesn't gel with _One Piece_ you will be _horrified_ when you can no longer *marinate* yourself in a dozen episodes a day (more when you don't have work/school/etc.)!

i will never forget binging it on spring break 2010. my life was forever changed as soon as episode 309 hit me in the everything.
even though i was watching impel down at that point - so much in the current episodes pointed me back to Water 7 (i thought at first that my grasp on the characters from East Blue-Alabasta from 4Kids, & background info on them would help, but i ended up experiencing most of the story backwards & enjoyed it a hell of a lot even so)

Remember how Usopp spent YEARS yelling about how pirates are coming in order to give her hope and continued to do so even after her death because he gets attached to this sort of thing? To Usopp the idea of just abandoning something or someone just because its going to die must be sickening

(Just to clarify over here i just finished ennie's lobby so there may be a few discrepancies with what i say but whatever...) To be honest it was also pretty obvious to me that it was the last thing he had from his hometown truly with him. I just gotta say that it's like luffy loosing their straw hat, they're not gonna take it all that lightly, they're gonna try their best to get it fixed, no matter what, it's an object that has a lot of importance to them.
What i think is what really went trough Usopp's mind at that moment is that luffy did NOT try hard enough, didn't even consult him, didn't get the specifics, NOTHING, ZERO EFFORT. Usopp even brought up the point of them maybe just wanting more money as they're shipwrights after all, if they sell them a ship they'd be making more than they'd be for fixing one ship... To be honest he had a point as far as he knew.

It's easy to point at Usopp for being at fault for this argument, but Luffy is as well. He just nearly lost to Foxy, and absolutely lost to Aokiji, and earlier in the day Iceburg told him that he was a terrible captain for putting feelings for a ship above the lives of his crew. Luffy right now is insecure, and says something without thinking. Friendships can end that way very easily, and this felt even more realistic in such a silly stretchy funny cartoon show where nothing bad happens.
Edit: since there's a exchange of opinions happening in the comments, let me lay out my stance on Usopp too (mainly because I enjoy chaos). Usopp is also insecure right now. He knows he's the weakest of the crew. He just got beat up by the Franky Family twice in one afternoon, and sees what the others did to avenge him as something he couldn't do because he's too weak. Yes, the Going Merry is incredibly important to him because it was a gift from Kaya and because he's been in charge of keeping her repaired. But he did know she was broken before this, and because of his current state of mind he's not able to view things rationally, just lashing out in the heat of the moment.
Usopp also had no idea what a Klabautermann was before Franky told him, and no context for who or what repaired the damage in Skypiea.

    • @frenchynoob
      @frenchynoob 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

Nevermind all that (even though it's totally correct and well said), Luffy is _literally_ wrong in this argument. Usopp is fighting for the Merry because he is convinced she is alive. And he is _proven right_ by Franky. Anyone who still argues Usopp was making a fuss over "just a ship" was sleeping during Water 7.

@@mayonnaise3959 you're being an armchair general, here. The fact that it was sentient is undeniable: Franky confirms this himself, there is NO argument to be had on this. As far as Usopp is concerned, the actual rules of how a Klaubautermann works are a complete mystery to him: there is no reason he should assume "letting it die" is the best option for it, he knows no more about them than the rest of the crew. To say his actions are "selfish and stupid" is completely misunderstanding his reasoning, which unfortunately most one piece fans are victims of.

Usopp is my favorite Straw Hat. Because he isn't a monster. He is a normal guy who is really good at sniping. He's the John McClane of the One Piece world. Completely over his head. Always getting the living Hell beat out of him, yet somehow constantly coming through at the end just when everyone needs it the most. He has to use his wits and sheer determination to make his way through a world of monster villains so powerful they would make Darkseid do a double take. That's why he is my favorite.

I have to disagree, that's one of Sanji's best lines! Chopper doesn't know Nami's past with the Arlong Pirates and how she lied to her whole village to protect them, but Sanji does! And that's the logic he's employing here. It's not about the lies, it's about understanding why someone (Nami, Robin, whomever) lies.

I was really enjoying One Piece up into this point, but literally the moment I hit Water 7, I got HOOKED. It was a Friday, I was done with my homework, I started with the Aokiji episode aaaand...I watched 30 episodes back to back to back. Which to put that in perspective, is about 10 hours and almost the entirety of Water 7. I've done other binges of One Piece past that point, but those are out of love for the show. That one is what MADE me love the show. I was literally on the edge of my seat the entire time. I watched 30 episodes straight because I was so invested in what was happening and couldn't bring myself to out it down. Before getting into the Usopp-Luffy argument (because it also for me is one of my favorite chapters in the whole series and so incredibly well build up), I need to defend my precious boy Sanji for the line you think he didn't cook with, because I still absolutely love it, because it's so very fundamentally Sanji. Partly because yes, it is absoultely outwardly corny, cheesy and something you might roll your eyes at, but as things are with Sanji below that corny simp coating is a genuine care and believe in Robin as their crew mate. While everyone is running around trying to find out the truth about Robin and to find explanations, proof and reasoning for her behaiour, Sanji decided right then and there that he knows her and looked at her and simply saw that this is not what she truely wants, so he is not giving up on her and he doesn't need an explanation, he simply believes in her. This one line is Sanji's typical genuine care hidden under his theatrics and it is so on point in terms of writing to me and that's why I love the line despite it being one I'd roll my eyes if someone else said this in a different context.
And then for the Usopp argument, you already hit on most of the Usopp side of things, but while I think it's hard to assign "fault" to Luffy here, there is also A LOT going on with Luffy in my opinion here that adds to it. It's why I think Long Ring Long Lang is a fundamentally important arc as setup for this. In that arc Luffy without much thinking as usual, almost gambled parts of his crew away. He as the captain agreed to something his crew would have had to suffer the consequences of. There is a level of intensity to the end of the Foxy fight where it truely dawns on Luffy that he could lose members of his crew and he decides he will not let that happen. But then after that Aokiji does happen and suddenly the thread gets repeated, and then he left Usopp alone with the money after Usopp specifically told him "but you need to protect me" and Usopp gets hurt badly. And then he, dreamer that he is, acts just like Usopp on not wanting to give up the ship initially and Iceburg flat out tells him, he is putting his crew at risk with that and it makes him a bad captain. A feeling that imho has been creeping up withing Luffy throught all of these moments that start piling up. Luffy before this saga would be actually the person most on Usopp's side here, he would want to keep the Merry no matter what other people tell him, but he has now been shown repeatedly, that he as the captain should act more responsibly if he wants to be there for his crew and not do simply whatever he wants to. He is acting the way he thinks he should be acting, not the way that comes natural to him and that's part of why Usopp "doesn't get him". Luffy leaving the Merry behind is a new way for Luffy to express his care for Usopp and his crew, but not one that Usopp is used to and thus understands as such.
That's why that whole argument feels so gut wrenching and tragic. Because it's two people tyring to care about each other (Luffy by being more responsible and Usopp by no being a burden) but not fully getting the message that this is what the other one is doing.
Sorry I'm rambling again as everytime I see someone talk about that scene, because it's just THAT good.

While franky was building his battlefranky's he was told to stop by several characters iirc. But once they were built he was specifically told that he must love and accept them and take responsibility for them by tom. Guns exist in our world of course and are not inherrently good or evil, nor can they be uninvented. We need to take responsibility for the damage they cause and regulate their usage. This is mirrored in franky himself whose self worth was tied to his work as he was an unloved child. Melontee did a phenominal video on franky that goes into greater depth.

Water 7 is still my favorite arc because of the feels! Usopp and Luffy arguing felt so human and I could understand both points of view because they were both feeling like they had let the crew down in different ways. Luffy was doing a better job of masking it but he was compensating and trying to act like a real captain and didn’t do the best job of breaking the news to Usopp but on the other hand no matter how he said it Usopp may have had a similar reaction regardless. Merry crying at the end of their fight was too much and I still cry at that scene. Oda was in his bag! Water 7 is flawless imo.

  • @sanji_joestar
    @sanji_joestar 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

The argument with Usopp also shows that Luffy's being challenged into something he doesn't like but has to
LRLLand shows how much he's ready to do to not lose a crewmate with the davy back fight and the arc concluding on Aokiji's arrival
And what it shows is he can be reckless when it comes to that risking to freeze
That's what Iceburg pointed out to him directly when he said he'd sail with the Merry anyway
Luffy had to reflect and take a stance
So to not worry Usopp, and being he lacks tact, he tries to brush it off as someone that's not Usopp's fault.
Not understanding Usopp's feelings, because yeah they didn't talk it through but he's been feeling useless for a while. And the Merry's dying state reflects that for him.
Usopp's stubbornness also comes from the fact that he's the only one who knows about the Klabauterrman, he always knew the Merry was done but giving up on it was like giving up on himself.
So yeah beautifully set up argument where both sides are legitimate in their approach

As a fellow Usopps Stans (I've been one since 04), I agree with you. Usopp's been my favorite
since he first appeared in the US's version of Shounen Jump in One Piece. Water 7 and Thriller
Bark are my favorite arcs. Also as a fan fiction reader, there's a lot more than 6 Usopp Stans.
He gets a lot less love than most of the Strawhats but he definitely has more than 6 fans.

Usopp felt that his value to the crew was tied to Merry, this ship that they only got because of people he introduced them to. He fixed it up so much despite not being a shipwright because he felt that it was the only thing keeping him amongst the Straw Hats. So when they were willing to get rid of Merry, Usopp felt like he too was easily expendable.

Tom will be my absolute favorite character from Water 7, together with Franky. These two are amazing and especially. Tom's quote after slapping his pupil for the first time, telling him it isn't his fault at all. Rather to be proud what he makes.
Stuff like this is so amazing and sadly so many people rather enjoy mindless battles, instead of enjoying well-written characters and stories.
My least favorite arc is upcoming and despite loving few bits from there, I am very much interested about your thoughts on Enies Lobby.

The scene where luffy is stuck between two buildings is one of my favourites, luffy being questioned about being a leader, losing robin and ussop at the same time, by things out of his reach and nami saying robin didn't bretrayed them made him have a goal again, he is the definition of do whatever you can, all paths were closed and he got unstuck by giving him a new goal. Luffy's growth in this saga is incredible, you will see.

Yeah water seven is pretty good with how it shakes up the one piece formula of getting to a new island. Fighting the big bad and moving on.
Oda even had the galley law crew waiting for an attack like final bosses in oast arcs but things changed a ton when we found out cp9 was there and it wss characters we wouldn't have expected like the bartender. Secretary and law crew.
Ussop wise we see luffy isn't taking the whole merry being retired thing seriously which probably got under ussops skin that while he was out the crew agreed to give up a gift from his best friend. That plus knowing the ship has a soul and that very soul saving them at the end of ennies lobby was a very powerful touch showing how mistreated merry was and still kept going for the crew to get them to a new island.

Enjoying the characters more the plot makes total sense, honestly, because the characters are fantastic. But I love One Piece because of how often the plot is influenced because if the characters.
This arc wouldn't be as good as it is if it weren't for Ussop being the way he was; nervous about his place, equating his worth to the Merry's continued use, and his general sense of unworthiness around veritable gods like Luffy and Zoro.
I am curious if you ever intend on looking at the one piece movies, since while being non-canon, I feel all of them use the characters quite well and are mildly entertaining at worse. I would heavily recommend movies 1, 2, 4, and 6 mainly though, as they are perhaps the most high quality amongst the movies that take place around parts you've already read.
Particularly, movie 6 is a masterpiece, so if you maybe wanna check that out as an october video, or just enjoy it in your own time, feel free!

No, not _that_ one. Or _that_ one. The arc (saga?) *after* Enies Lobby remains one of my favorites, even though many consider it one of the least. Here's hoping I've found someone who can _appreciate_ it, even if it doesn't end up being on of their favs.
Also that we don't have to wait too long. I know it takes time to consume _One Piece_ and then to make a video about it... but that doesn't mean you don't *feel* the wait. XD

  • @swiftswalow

I always say: Usopp was extremely invested on the Mery for a lot of reasons, but one that rarely gets talked about is... Usopp sees himself in Mary, they both came from the same island, they have a special connection. And Usopp basically understood with the Mery "we will kick out anyone weak enough to continue no matter how far they've taken us" and Usopp, of course, being the weakest, thinks "they WOULD kick my ass out if the opportunity arises." Which, for the strawhats, who at that point have acted like a group of friends, feels like an absolute breach of trust and care and extremely frustrating to say that "if you are not strong enough you cannot travel with us".
Usopp's anger and feeling of betrayal is 100% justified, even if he is in the logical wrong.

I took Sanji's line way differently. I always took at as him being perceptive enough that he knows there's more to Robin's actions than just lying.
I have more to say but I'm gonna out a minor spoiler tag right here before I continue.
As someone who also has a past he hasn't told the crew, Sanji probably had a strong gut feeling that there was more to Robin's leaving. It's reinforced even more when Sanji does something similar later in the story.

One Piece is so good and fun that even with a substantial amount of unavoidable spoilers on first watch/read, you can still easily enjoy it and have a great time, however- it will never be as thrilling and exciting to watch/read One Piece as it is doing so while it's still ongoing. One Piece could fit many genres, but one of it's main ones are "mystery", and you benefit tremendously from getting reveals on a weekly basis with the entire community, rather than after the story will eventually end all will be known and revealed already.

Love seeing you document your OP journey!
I think Usopp's defiance towards replacing Merry is a lot more than him being mad about all the care he's put into the Merry. Think about WHY he put so much care into her. She's the only thing he has to remind him of home, Merry is his straw hat. What would usopp tell Kaya if she found out they just threw Merry away? How would he face her? How could he let that happen, how could he return home without her? And Usopp never says a word about this which is so gut wrenching because he doesn't want to admit it to/talk about it with even his closest friends.

The argument between luffy and ussop is hands down the greatest dialogue oda ever made. The build up of ussop’s emotions. Luffy’s inexperience with this uncomfortable situation. The perfect timing of the rest of the crew’s inputs. The fact that this is all happening inside the merry. And the sun setting gradually to golden light. I love every aspect of the scene.

I've met a few people over the years who like Usopp for the same reason as me: it's "easier" to be brave like Luffy and Zoro when you are shown to be really strong from the beginning... but knowing you are the weakest link and the most normal (together with nami) and still pushing through? Thats real brave. And yeah the argument was really good because he's been shown fixing the merry time and time again even when luffy broke parts because of being careless. I love them both and understand both sides. And thats why its great

There’s another contender for “best argument ever written” (imo) in Mushoku Tensei. Like the one between Usopp and Luffy, it’s one based on an understanding, but it feels even more organic and realistic than the one between Luffy and Usopp. It’s an argument between the MC and his father where there’s a misunderstanding between the two that results in the MC slugging his own father and later making up with a very heartwarming father-son hug where the father starts bawling his eyes out.

I argue Water 7 is the only arc to ever give each Strawhat a PERSONAL development and their own character moments
-A turning point for most like Robin giving up at the same time achieving a goal of finding friends by sacrificing herself for them
-Zoro being more assertive to his captain and crew planting his role as co-captain in times of crisis
-Usopp brave enough to go against his captain. Projecting his insecurities in the Merry issue.
-Nami's caring nature in full bloom about Robin & Usopp than money or safety (+ fitting how the navigator directing them to Franky House & save Robin)
-Sanji being a compass of the group stopping Luffy from resorting to careless thoughts, even thinking about how they maybe don't know much about Robin as a person and helping with Chopper about Usopp
-Chopper overall being more reliable independently and staying true as a Doctor and friend to Usopp
-and Franky introduced ofc and inspired by all of them
They weren't just characters like the previous arcs. They had relationships and were real people here.

What I love about Usopp doubling down, is that it feels entirely in character for him to be acting on his own insecurities in that moment.
Usopp at that time was the weakest member of the weekling trio (sure Nami had a fly new climatact due to his own creativity, but That wasn't his weapon). What's more usap was the member of the crew who just screwed up badly. He got beat and cost the crew their treasure, And everyone else getting it back doesn't really change that.
So here he comes waking up feeling pretty low to find out that a far more essential and nearly family like member of the crew, the ship is now considered useless and they're getting rid of it. It's easy to see how that kind of action can poison the mind of someone who's already feeling pretty low and useless.
