This was an absolute joy to watch. Ian, your excitement was palpable, and EXACTLY what I'm like when I go on my hook-a-new-Ren-fan fishing trips. So far, my husband is a convert who now has a Ren playlist for his commute to work, my daughter (21) was hooked via the 'Ren is fit' bait, my 8 year old boy was summoned by Bongo Bong (and stayed for the guitar stuff), and I FINALLY got my 26 year old son over to the light side last night via The Tales Trilogy (he loves dark and twisty stories). My mission is complete! Now to turn to the rest of the world 🤣🤣🤣

I liked the track at the end, btw. I like your poetry too, though I don't comment much. I can watch stuff and read, but typing comments is hit and miss as my youngest is ASD and pretty much attached to me permanently.
I love how everyone who discovers Ren feels compelled to share him with other people. He is a unique treasure that deserves all the exposure he is receiving. I can't even imagine what a live show would be like. Hopefully the treatment he is receiving will get him to a place where he can tour. Loved watching your brothers reaction and your face as you were watching him. 🤣

I decided to watch the video just to check this comment was actually saying there was something strange about a 33yr old looking like a man on a show that was 37 when sed show started.
And it wasn’t. But I typed it and checked Cillian Murphys age when peaky blinders began so the energy was built for a dunk and to self dunk is preferred to just letting it sit 😂

The gradual brain melt for Cooper as he discovers how multitalented and damn amazing Ren is. All while Ian is excited like a little kid simultaneously getting Christmas presents and seeing his prank being pulled off 😂 Absolutely fucking loves this! There is a special joy in bringing people down the Ren rabbit hole as well as watching it happen. Ren wishes to change the division we see in the world today and I think people coming together in our love for Ren and his music is a wonderful first step ❤
We all need to find a guy who looks at us the way this dude looks at Ren. This was amazing.

Thanks for being disciplined and keeping it moving along. Great reaction. I don't listen to reactions this long, but... I thought I'd watch during dinner. I didn't expect to watch the entire thing, but I did. subscribed. Just a note: He doesn't know when he was bitten by the tick that gave him Lyme, but it was 2010 when he was so continuously exhausted that he couldn't hide it any more - while working on his first record. A few months in, he stopped and went home "to rest." But it kept getting worse. It was 2016 when he got his diagnosis - by then, the medical word was that he'd probably not live past 30: in 2015 he didn't think he'd live another year. So, saved by stem cell transplants, (which he had 3X over the next few years)he's still dealing with organ and brain damage and unending pain. (An interviewer commented that he looks good, he responded that he chooses when people see him.) The treatment in Canada was initially planned for 6 months, and is now extended. Ren has said it's helping. When you watch Patience, that's from before his diagnosis - pure courage and determination.
Great comment, and I especially like that you mentioned “Patience”. It does show Ren’s fortitude. I also like “Crutch” which was physically demanding and done before his Lyme was treated.
Those first three are the exact videos I love to share when introducing people to Ren. Great choices! They give a good sense of what he's capable of overall.

And as a fellow creative and a person who struggles with guilt over not spending as much time creating as I could, I want to say that "Hi Ren" reminded me to dance gently, even (maybe especially) with the dark or damaged parts of myself that I would rather shove aside.

On the one hand, Ren's struggle is what seeps into his music making it so fucking incredible but if he never got sick? He'd have probably written a Broadway play or blockbuster movie by now.
I love your excitement. You watching your brother - I love this bc it's EXACTLY how I am sharing something new with my people and Ren is new for me and I CAN'T WAIT to turn on more people. His voice travels up the staircase and notice, there’s no light at the top. It’s dark. Which fits with what happens.
Rather implausibly, I watched all the way through even though I've seen all these probably 20 times! Fun to watch brothers having fun. Deeply moving to watch Ren, as always. And yes, bring Cooper back!
One of my favourite things about Ren reactions is seeing the moment that the person crosses the line of being changed forever. Particularly on Hi Ren - you can see it in the eyes that the person has been touched. In my past, it was a Love Supreme, Dark Side of the Moon, Ziggy Stardust, OK Computer moment - it's probably why us older folks see something so familiar in Ren. Great reaction guys.

That was fun to watch! Jenny’s and Screech’s Tales were released in February and September 2019, respectively. Violet’s Tale was released in July 2022 and then the full trilogy video was released about a month later.

Edit: staircases in the trilogy...
- Screech - Ren starts his Screech guitar intro melody partway down that long staircase... Screech is mid-fall; he's already killed Jenny at this point, and is about to hit the ground without a parachute (suicide by police).
- Violet - the camera looks upwards into what, from this angle, is a wonky off-kilter spiral staircase. Even though intellectually we know we're looking *upwards* you can look at that frame from a different 'side' of your brain and see it as a staircase spiralling downwards, just like Violet's life.💔
On top of it of course also being perfect for the reverb-y, eerie soundscape.
That's a good point about the stair position in Screech's tale. You might be right about the staircase in Violet's tale. I took it a little differently, as the staircase was an opportunity to climb out of the dark place Violet's in (and started in given her awful father), but she can only look upwards and ends up having no chance of climbing out (after which Ren goes out into the dark alley).
Also, not sure if planned, but the seagull sounds in the quiet moments in the alley part of Violet's tale fit perfectly, just another case of using the environment around and how his live takes add things that would be more difficult in a studio recording.
I love the seagull for lots of out-of-story reasons, and within the story, I love that it's perfectly placed as both a death omen/call to beyond, and an ambulance siren.

I love that your brother is basically having the exact same journey that I took as I fully realized the depth of the musicality and fell entirely into the rabbit hole.
I've tried to share a Ren with some of my family members and it's completely random as to who of them get it and admire it as much as I do. My brother-in-law who is very into music was dismissive immediately. Whereas my 60 year old Mormon aunt was obsessed...
I wish I could figure out the key to what makes it trigger for some people as the most amazing thing they've probably seen in years versus the meh reaction that a lot of other people seem to give...

Thank you so much for this, really enjoyed it and great chemistry between Cooper and yourself. The first times for hearing any Ren songs feels like being slapped round the face several times and you have no idea what's just happened. I'm convinced that after a few more watches once Cooper's had time to digest, being an actor, he will recognise just what an exceptional story teller and actor Ren is. Facial expressions, cadence, lighting, muscial creativity, lyrics like velvet etc. Would love to see you both react to Money Game 1&2, Animal Flow, Losing It as well as his combos with Chinchilla. I loved this reaction - I didn’t know who to watch - Cooper watching for the first time or Ian watching Cooper knowing what was coming.
I think Cooper summed it up when he said “I didn’t know I needed this” - I think so many have felt that when being introduced to Ren’s music - Ren is the shot in the arm we didn’t know we needed - he’s energised and raised us up - filled a gap left by a lot of current mainstream music.
