That section at 4:50 is more than just changing accents, it’s actually changing the pattern slightly. That tripped me up until I saw the order of strings changes.
How long exactly did it take Andy to master this? I have been doing it for a couple of weeks and I can do it sort of ok but not as fast

he said in an interview, that he was doing that for several years in his early days, on a Mandolin, trying to do Bela Fleck Banjo patterns. So it's something he has "always" been working on.
Learning this at 16, still painful. I guess the only difference is I have a lot of time since I don’t have that many responsibilities yk. I have time to just watch TH-cam and play guitar
it's a bit confusing, but flatpicking refers to just using a guitar pick as opposed to playing fingerstyle or thumb-picked guitar. Alternate picking is any repeated up-and down picking motion and covers a variety of motions and styles. Crosspicking is one of those styles- in crosspicking has a curved picking trajectory, which means the pick ends up escaping from the strings after every pickstroke, as opposed to being stuck in between two strings. It's often used for one-note-per-string patterns like the one Andy is showing here. Like with every guitar technique there are multiple ways to accomplish the curved motion. At least this is how I understand it. Troy Grady has some nice videos on understanding crosspicking. Hope it helps!
When you were doing it slowly you were alternating but as you sped up you went down, down, up etc. I could be wrong but I don't think so. P. S I'm a big fan. Love your work.
This is well worth watching several times over,. and then watch it a few more times.

'Summer has come and passed...'
Good speaker...makes you want to listen to what he says.
Andy is among my favorite teachers.
Yessssss I've been looking for this! And now the boring part: hours and days and weeks of practicing it
@@marcos_c_m it's called longsuffering
I agree, but I would also suggest that it can be entertaining and not boring... :)
If it feels boring youve got the wrong frame of mind.

Not that big of a deal. If I work on that, I can easily see myself mastering it in about 17 years...
You're a fast learner then. I was praying for reincarnation.
@@winstonsmith8240 lol!
how long did it take for you to build up speed
I wish I had discovered country picking when I was 13. It's a little painful to learn these things after 30

@@jubnx2781 Also good to hear of a younger person using their time on a worthwhile pursuit. Keep at it and tear up that guitar.
Would this be easier fingerpicked?
Yes but if you like using a pick or have many single note lines your doing it might be better to do this. Ideally we’d be able to do both.
Is there any real difference between cross picking, alternate picking and flat picking or just different terms for the same thing?

I really need to get this down..
This should not be humanly possible. How is he doing this???
Looks like Andy is wearing one of those hats with the hair built in 😆
Serious amount of hours spent practicing to get to that speed
HOW
so much easier to just hybrid pick that pattern AlA Danny Gatton.
Guitarwizard on keyboard it’s even easier, do that

Don't preach just play dude
Give instruction without giving instruction.
alternate picking is a waste of time
What are you supposed to do then. Look at the crazy shredding he does at the end. You can’t do that with hybrid picking and what not
living is a waste of time
