- In this Video the Spitballin' team tells Scott what cards they think he should invest his money into. From Shohei Ohtani to Clayton Kershaw, the Spitballin' team debates what cards are a good short term, mid term, and long term purchase!
I have purchased a card that we discuss in this video! We will be sharing what the card is this next week on the channel. What card do you think it is? 👀
The 2011 Finest Trout Gold Auto /75
I hope the Mookie Betts
JRam! (Only because I’m a Cleveland fan and I’d be extremely jealous)
@@jaymarble5282 i think its this one too - i was watching it, it ended around 10K
Purchase a stadium club sp from before 2021
And you be alright 😅
The knowledge in this room! I took more notes on this episode that any recent ones. Thanks for sharing your thought processes, you guys are great
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words
Absolutely the best thumbnail ever.......
😂🙏🏼
@@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin it's a shame Scottie won't listen to the wise advice of the Jedi Council.
Loved this video idea! Can’t wait to see what you picked up Scott! Awesome job everyone!
Honestly Scott the best thing you can do to complement your Mays & Aaron Co-Signers is a decent grade 52 Mays and 54 Aaron rookies. There's minimal risk in that, and how good will those 3 cards look together?
Great idea! We should’ve looked at those cards as well!!
Scottie three weeks ago: My resolution is to not buy any cards this year
Scottie tonight: Guys! Help me spend this $7500. Quick! Let's GOOOO!!!!
😂😂
Mantle & Bonds auto's where I'll park my money at. Good luck in your new investment👍
Can’t argue with those choices!
Thanks!
Although I have no idea about a price point that Heritage Bonds is a BEAUTY!!
You also got me pumped when you showed that Willie card because my last purchase was the Joe Carter equivalent which is such an iconic card for me growing up in Canada in the 90's.
Which Joe Carter? He’s got some great stadium club autos with shots from his walk off!
Can’t wait too see what you get Scott. Phill spot on with people taking pictures of cards on an angle, I won’t buy if the pic are like that.
Love this video! The original trout is the best obviously but i like the blue ohtani or the first bonds
That Bonds /52
Red auto 😮😮
Right?? That one stopped me in my tracks for a minute
Loved this style episode!
Cool - thanks for the feedback!
I’m at the Thunder game listening to this podcast. lol
Love the priorities! 💪🏼
@@dsphillips16 Talk about Multitasking with a Beer in Hand.
@ Modelo for the win!
Great problems to have! Go with the ohtani in my opinion. But then again I dont have the card equity right now for these heavy hitters so what do i know!
Therapy session for ScottyB
😂😂😂
💯
I saw that trout ending! Beautiful!!
Incredible card!
Kershaw would be a tough buy. He’s got good numbers but the rings came in the twilight of his career when he wasn’t “the guy” I definitely agree with the guys that I’d get it out of a bgs slab.
If it was me I’d go after that vintage signed mantle.
Love the Star Wars thumbnail!
Thanks!!! Our artist worked hard!
Great video as usual guys. I would buy the Mantle auto plus another card if it was my money.
Thanks for the feedback!!
My logic, as crazy as it might sound ohtani could have the most room to grow.. still. Not sure what the others can do the next year 2 year 5 years to grow. People have almost forgotten ohtani can go out and be a cy young. If he comes out next year and pitches like a cy young or wins one could be in for crazier times with his prices
I feel like Trout is a ticking time bomb - kind of the opposite of a bubble. If he can just put up one of his vintage 4-5 WAR 1st halves, his demand will boom again.
Chris here - if he can somehow play his way out of Angels Stadium and to an east coast power house 📈📈
@ If he gets voted to the ASG AND gets traded to a contender, his prices will go nuclear 🤯
I just have a feeling Trout is going to have a healthy & huge year, perhaps Philly makes a big trade offer at the AS break
Great thoughts, insights and outlining of each of your approaches to investment category cards! Thank you for sharing your expertise guys 👍
When dropping significant money on a card, you would have to be tactical and transactional more than a fan & collector with any kind of sentimental lens (Unless you collect vintage and have deep pockets then, that’s a different conversation).
💯💯
Great episode guys 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Thank you! 🙏🏼
Thanks for watching!
Love all the thought processes!
I wasn’t convinced you wanted any of these long term other than the first Trout. So I would suggest being patient until you find something you don’t have to think about.
Chris here - trout was definitely his top choice. But sad news, he lost the auction.
I would go Ohtani. Trout is too risky. He’s on an irrelevant team, has had injury issues the past several years, and has next to zero cultural impact or relevance. His future marketability is going to be restricted to only hardcore advanced statistic collectors from the US. Ohtani was considered one of the greats on Japanese baseball/international ball before we even consider what he’s done in the MLB. I’ve lived in Orange County my entire life. My 83 year old mother has no idea who Mike Trout is even though the Angels are our local team-and she knows who Ohtani is without watching a single game.
Chris here - I’ve been pushing Ohtani on Scott for over a year now!
Good stuff. I would pick up the Ohtani BC auto if you can negotiate the price down, or I liked the 1st Bonds you showed and the Mantle auto (and I don’t own any vintage)
I honestly feel like Trout may be a buy right now. I feel like he just can't keep getting injured like this. He has to have at least one healthy season sooner or later and when he does his prices will explode
Question for you guys... I am also gearing up for a big high ticket purchase... if you had to choose between one of 4 players, which would you pick and why?
Judge
Ohtani
Griffey
Bonds
Chris here - I’d go Ohtani.
He’s the most famous baseball player ever and is becoming a legend before our very eyes.
He absolutely has to hit DH for the remainder of his career for him to get to 500 HRs.
Ruth!
Trout is a huge gamble. Even if he has a great season this year, what about next year? He needs to reach 500 HRs I feel for his cards to be a solid long term investment.
I find it so much easier to enter the Cert # to get the pop report. I struggle getting pop reports trying to enter the card set and player
Scott, did you see the Mookie card that Layton's pulled this week in Diamond Icon's, of the Mother's day Cleat. Sick Card.
We’re all excited to see Mookie signing Topps cards again!
This is obviously not my choice and definitely not my money, but I actually didn't like any of these options. The selection of extremely nice cards to get with $7-8k is huge! But you need to buy what you love. For me as I've mentioned before on here, I mainly just collect Nolan Ryan and have since 1988. $8k would get me a 1968 Nolan Ryan RC in PSA 8 😂....but for what Scott likes, stick to players you like and PSA 10s in a specific card. Easier to move and will demand the premium.
PSA 10’s if possible
Gold refractors if possible
Do you have any cards that would pair well with something you’re looking at? Like perhaps a blue Bowman Ohtani chrome along with Blue Ohtani auto.
That’s exactly what I want to do. Flip my Ohtani 2018 Bowman base refractor (PSA10) and blue batting auto (BGS9) for a blue pitching auto (BGS9.5) to pair with my blue batting auto (BGS9.5). Then frame both in a single picture frame! That would be amazing.
Pretty crazy I literally just traded for a 2011 Finest Refractor Auto /499 Mike Trout...
Congrats!
I'm only 1 minute in. But $7500? Gotta throw that in an IRA/Roth if you haven't done so already Scott! Then when it turns to 55k+ in 30 years you can buy the cards then /s 😆
This kind of iron clad logic has no place in our hobby!! 😂😂😂
Question for Chris and Jeff….what did you guys pay for the blue auto ohtani? If you don’t mind me asking. Ballpark
Check out our Blabbin’ ‘Bout Slabbin’ channel. We did a video about what we paid and how we came up with the money.
It was a stressful week.
Mr. B, you just did a video yesterday showing almost every investment in current players was a huuuuge mistake.
Scott Here- haha! That is a great point. It is too little too late now. I just got the card I bought in the mail 😅
@@SpitballinCards I just hope it's not an Ohtani.
Not long now :D

@SpitballingCards Hey guys can we get a upcoming episode with the panels choices X2 picks for each, best Rookie NL & AL/ best bounce back season/ best Starting Pitcher/ most stolen bases/ most HRs/ most wins CP/ best dark horse prospect and anything other categories you guys can come up with. Like many this would be great to hear all ya guys thoughts before opening day. Keep up the good work all 🫡
They sure are!
We will definitely do a season preview episode!
Thanks for watching!
Best liquid “affordable”Ohtani rookie card?
I would say 2018 Series 2 Rookie.
Define affordable for us.
@ For Scott it’s $7500. I’m thinking
Hey Dan, Hope all is well. Are you heading to the National this year?
As someone who appreciates common sense and the comparison of counting stats, I’m very happy that Trout’s refractor autos from bowman chrome have started to dip below Pujols bowman chrome autos.
It just makes sense, right??
Besides the numbers, there are way fewer Pujols autos!
Well done 👍
🍻🍻
What's up fellas great show. I don't think I'd buy it, no I definitely wouldn't buy it I'm more into vintage but that blue Kershaw is a beautiful card
7:08 My approach if I were looking at the Betts card would be using that sale price to frame the other 2014 Mookie Chrome Prospects autos.
So for example, if we went something more common, the basic refractor auto out of /500, I’d need it to be $2400 max (150/500*$8000). Anything above, and the $8000 is potentially better.
Alternately, if the /150 is $8000 and the Gold /50 was decently under $24000 , COULD the Gold be the better play ?
None of these cards are in my price range (my most expensive card is just under 4-figures), so I’m cool cranking the numbers for myself, getting to the other end and deciding that no card works for me at a current price.
I slept on Bobby Witt. Is it too late to get into a 2020?
I think the 90case hits from leaf flair ,donnruss and few other brands are still affordable and are still some of the best looking cards out there. Basketball has been on a high for last couple years but baseball still has a lot of room to grow same in football and hockey lots of potential I believe
Scott, I know you are a sports card guy, but I would love to see you do a few Pokemon videos. There are many, but I really like Spitballin and Blabbin. I've switched to Pokemon after collecting baseball cards since my childhood. I'm just tired so many losses in sports cards. I really enjoy what you do, but listening to you do a few Pokemon videos would be great.
That trout is at Probstein, it will definitely get shill bid way to high. Sorry its just a fact
It didn’t go as high as we thought!
I'm just confused how the 2011 Topps Update Trout PSA 10 went UP in value the last 3 months. I was hoping to buy at a discount but not happening soon.
What are Card Addicts fav movies?. I like the wall behind him.
Hey man thanks for noticing!!

Terminator 2
The Rock - such a great action movie
And of course - Lord of The Rings trilogy
@ very good taste. I’d love to collect old movie posters.
what do you guys think of this new product idea "Oops, All Silver Packs"
😂😂😂
Its probably coming soon
Curious, why not invest into vintage? Honest question not trying to be a smartass
Scott here- Great question. I was looking at vintage! I was looking at either a signed Mantle signed 60s card, a 51 Bowman Mantle, or maybe a Williams Play Ball rookie. However, I did go with a modern card. For whatever reason I typically prefer modern (1990-2018) cards. I like the era a lot!
@@SpitballinCards Completely understand that. I just like vintage because it's stable. I've just been burnt by moderns and sticking with vintage from now on. Congrats on the new pick up!
I am a Big Adley Rutschman Fan,can't afford his 1st Bowman Draft cards,I did Win a 2023 Topps Update Wood on-card Game Used Bat Relic Card for $220 in a break but it's my only 1 and only, Orioles Cards will be the Collection Team to Collect with their Young Talents, any Thoughts on this?Great Channel Guts.
I have no idea how a piece of cardboard that is chucked around at the factory ever graded a gem mint grade. I see flaws on all cards just buy the 9s and save yourself a ton of money they look exactly like 10s
This is becoming a popular strategy. I think we understand the appeal.
17:08 - this
It’s a beauty
Buying Trout is a terrible idea… dude is a walking medical tent. Hasn’t had a great season since 2019… just say that out loud. Buy an Ohtani, or the best Ohtani you can get for that amount or liquidate more to get one.
Chris here - I like your thinking.
Even Goldschmidt is starting to rack up better career stats than Trout (they came up the same year)... and undervalued in my opinion. Yeah, Trout had those great consecutive seasons and excellent WAR... but he's on a decline like Mattingly did when his back started giving out... Trout is overvalued.
There’s plenty of Ohtani out there, I don’t have hard data but there’s no chance Ohtani rookie cards are less available than an ‘09 Trout 1sts or even his finest autos. I will admit my bias though, I do own a finest trout rookie auto /499 gem lol.
That’s why it’s a decent buy. I got an SGC 9 tribute flagship rookie under $250.
Take away from this...I hear buy the big cards in person which I always take that same approach. all grading companies make mistakes.
Ask sellers questions, good sellers are honeat sellers. If I have a vintage PSA 6 I have no problem saying its a good 6 or a strong 6, outside of the obvious centering, color etc.
Cash also goes a long long way at a show in hand in person!
Do you fellaa have a limit on what you will pay for a card online?
Chris here - we try to do in person deals whenever we can. Little risky if we don’t know the person yet, but seeing the cards in person goes along way for buyers and avoiding fees, etc for sellers is a huge win.
@SpitballinCards Love a win win!
I said i just pulled a scottie b cards and bought a grail in the live chat yest!, Halfway paid for as of now! lol, and it aint no Shohei, even though i like shohei alot.
Can’t wait to see it!
👏👏👏👏👏
Grading and certification of rare coins is 40+ years old. "Buy the coin, not the slab" is nearly as old.
I think higher end Nolan Ryan cards are a good investment. His RC or first few years in PSA 6 or better.
Chris here - I live the look of his second year card. The 1969.
Also his 93 Finest Refractor!
Hey fellas
🍻🍻
My card is also a Heavy Lumber On-card Autograph Card non-rookie also.
My thoughts are if the card is a 7 of any Future HOF player just to own a Autograph Rookie Card, just to have this partvof your Collection, the question is are you looking to keep it in you're Collection or is this a Money Grab?
Kershaw would be both. He is one I am happy to have in my collection for years to come or as a part of a package for a bigger card. That’s why I’m drawn to it vs more of a speculation card. It is currently an 8 (and deservedly so) which helps.
Scottieb, save your money and buy yourself a new hat 😮
😂
Scott should wait and hold out for a deal that you love and can't walk away from... so far I'm not convinced you showed the one for you out of this group.... I would be careful with the cash.
I know the set wasnt the best but why not get the patch relic from ohtani 50/50. We can argue he's one of the greatest at this point. It's his first season as a dodger and breaking franchise records. It was possibly his best game ever and you could get the gold /50 relic for like $4k!
Put some respeK on that mans name Jram
He’s a Great player. But does that equate to hobby value?? Will it??
Will India make a impact for th royals
I have to say, not likely?
I would think the Barry Bonds older card autos would be great investments....Instead of Trout...you can also look at Jim Thome who is way undervalued in my opinion and will end up with more HR's than Trout at this point...you need to see Trout complete a season at this point...IMO
For real, for real? Ohtani's cards perhaps 150 or better on his bowman 1st. Ohtani cards 50 or better from select sets. Other players like Soto not even sure his 1sts or rc's will hold value let alone increase. Judge? Yeah the early bowman autos and a few select sets 100 or better. For other mega stars other than bowman 1sts /50 or better and very few from select sets like red ink heritage. My point is very very few cards will hold value let alone increase. The main reason from a market perspective is that "important" cards multiply and proliferate at an astonishing rate. So much money goes into the market via breaking and new set releases. Just not enough money and new collectors coming in to support singles prices. Again let alone increase in value. Sports cards should be no more than 5% of ones net worth from an "investment" standpoint and a realistic expectation that most of one's holdings will eventually go to zero. Fr. Fr. Fr. Cmon guys.
Corbin Carrol and Bobby Witt
Jose Ramirez makes me think of Blue Jays that peaked late like Edwin Encarnacion, Carlos Delgado and Jose Bautista. Huge gamble unless he keeps the pace for the next 7-8 years.
Chris here - I agree he’s a huge gamble. Feels undervalued/under-appreciated, but why will that stop???
I do agree he’s a huge gamble and he needs to keep pace for several more years. But he’s far from a late bloomer - he’s been pretty consistent since his first full season in 2016. 52 WAR and counting
I wouldn’t say he was a late bloomer, he had back to back 7 war seasons at ages 24 and 25, if he keeps up a 5-6 war pace the next 3 years then he’s in the hall imo
Non-playing autos are meaningless to me. I don't collect anything Tony Gwynn beyond 2002.
Interesting - but I get it.
Never buying Trout
You guys are hurting my feelings with the Ramirez discussion.
Maybe you could just buy 0.1 bitcoin, wait 5-10 years, then buy all of these cards haha jk…or am I? 😅
Scottie B'ro OHtani lover U❣U got D' cash ready 2 go, B' patience! Breath in, breath out, "Wax-On! Wax-Off!" Relax grasshopper, let D' card come 2U; "$hoHE" will let U know when its $hoTime❣
People buying 10/10s is dumb imo. Buy the card not the grade. You buy a 10/10 or even a 10 you are going to pay a HUGE premium and the card wont be very different at all from a 9. So WHY pay THOUSANDS of dollars for a 10 instead? Stupid. Dont do it.
I agree about the auto 10’s. Just means the auto was a 10 when graded. But the grade still says 10 I’m even if it’s been in the sun for year and faded away.
Right now the PSA 10 is the standard. Easiest to sell later down the road.
Now I know this is wayyyyy out of left field. Get a Luca.
Why buy Luka when all of his cards are heavily inflated right now after the trade?
@ryanra44 I mean Luca is a generational player that maybe entering his prime. Plus think about his market, if he wins a ring.
@ but why buy during the hype? Not saying Doncic isn’t a great player or good investment (I don’t buy basketball), but I know buying during the hype rarely works out. I could be wrong though. I don’t know the basketball market
Hope you went with the Mookie or Mays auto.
Wouldn’t even consider touching anything Bonds related.
You all have Trout derangement syndrome... He's done ,investing in him is not wise.
You might be right! We all just want to see another great season soooooo bad.
