- This video was created By Steve Nagy (guy with glasses) and Chris Cherry for the purpose to review and rate 7 major air conditioner and heat pump brands. Brands review; Lennox, Trane, Carrier, Tempstar, Daikin, Rheem, and York. All of them are 3 ton air conditioners and all of them are popular AC systems here in South Florida.
Out of all brands, Lennox came up on the top and scored the best, 290 points. Trane scored 220 points, Carrier scored 180 points. Tempstar, Daikin and Rheem, head to head scored 170 points.
York scored the lowest, 160 points as it didn't qualify for the extra 10 points for reliability.

Hey great video i learned a lot.. i was taught that insulation and a good contractor that is knowledgeable makes a systems last a long long time…..
I can only tell you my Lennox system is now 11 years old stationed on a mountain in CT. It is a heat pump used about 9 to 10 months of the year above 38 degrees Fahrenheit. It was the second from the bottom of the available models. In the 11 years, after 10 years an overflow switch failed for $400 installation (parts were warrantied for 10 years). This year on the bi-annual examination, the exterior compressor showed a small drop in voltage. They installed a starter boost for $500 more to enable it to last a couple more years. Getting 13 years out of the system used over three quarters of a year I am pretty happy with it, saving a ton on oil heating costs. With this examination I think I will get another even though they cost a little more in my area. I had a Rheem AC only in my first home in NJ and it failed after 4 years so not getting that again.
I have seen it happen to every manufacturer, sorry you had a bad experience. Both installation and ductwork have a big impact on reliability, good maintenance can help but won’t compensate for the other two. Though it can identifying some of those problems. Hard to say what killed your unit.

@@Buc_Stops_Here Lennox makes a good system, and hopefully their evap-coil woes are behind them (as a company in general, sounds like you have a very healthy coil). Glad it’s working well for you.
@@JoeB3 One question for you since you seem to be very much involved and I did watch this video. Is it still relatively reliable today? I probably have a couple of more years of heat pump reliability until I will have to get a new system. Was the coil problem fixed on the newer units? Thank you.
@@Buc_Stops_Here So in our area, most of the new homes going in have Lennox units, so my perspective may be unfairly skewed. By way of explanation, even if the percentage of failures is the same between manufactures Lennox will appear to have more problems because there are more of them around. That said, we replace a decent number of their leaking coils, but it definitely appears to be much better and the leaks seem to be less server. I would say their new coil is much better. And again we are replacing leaking coils from every manufacture. There are a few contributing factors, but that’s the reality right now. I recommend everyone gets a 10 year labor warranty, it’s an additional cost, and considering inflation, you will not have to worry about some crazy bill at year seven.
I live in SC. My system runs every day of the year. My 18-year-old goodman heat pump is still running strong. My daughter had a 9-year-old Carrier condenser go bad. It had leaked all over. I replaced it with an Oxbox by Lennox.

I understand in any comparison, you can't compare everything. This video seemed to focus on design and construction aspects; certainly important. But maybe lifespan and cost also deserve equal weight. For example, that blower fan with the turbulent-reducing housing was a nice design. But if it lasts half the time of saya Daikin fan, and then costs 3x as much - is that really a unit you want to buy?
I'm looking at a new HVAC (heat pump) system. I agree on paper, Carrier, Trane, Lennox all look to have some great design and operating features. But I'm also seeing (from multiple places) where their recent reliability isn't great, and their repair costs are pricey.
Everyone has their opinion on which one has better reliability. Unfortunately there is no data provided by the manufacturer on the amount of failures of each part per manufacturer. There is no way to provide fact based statements on this. When it comes to repair cost that will depend on the contractor you are using.
What is the deal with the copper vs aluminum condenser? Why is aluminum better?
Cheaper for them to manufacture, the savings are not passed on to the consumer through.
Dont get no aluminum micro coil they leak bad. Thats what my Gibson had in it and they suck...
You guys are in Florida, but any plan to compare furnaces? Was nice to see the breakdown across brands.

Furnaces 59TP6 or 59SP6 with single stage AC
Is there any benefit during cooling with with dehumidification process in the summer when going with the Carrier Performance Two stage furnace 59TP6 (over the single stage 59SP6), when combined with the Carrier Performance single stage AC unit 24SPA6?
Has Lennox fixed their coil reliability issues they had a few years ago? getting a new Lennox system installed Monday.
I think that's why they talk about the quantum coil. Aluminum
My ac guy says the new Lennox use aluminum coils and are much better. Still its a Lennox.
So you would give a higher score to the Lennox Heat Pump over the Carrier Heat Pump?
Go with the lowest cost unit of a top name brand. They all break after the warranty expires. Nothing lasts like my 40+ year old Payne "leaker."
They definitely don't make them like they use to.

Doesn’t seem very unbiased.. you gave Lennox 20 points for having wavy coil fins, and then you gave York 10 points for have wavy coil fins. Also tell me how an additional motor mount is going to change anything about the system.
Thank you for pointing it out. We misspoke on the video but we actually gave York 20 points for the corrugated coil fins. The actual score for the York system is accurate.
When it comes to motor mounts we all know the benefit of 4 mounts. York is a good system therefore made it to our list.
They are ALL junk. They suppose save money because of energy efficiency. Its not going to save any money because the ecm motors and compressors don't last. Some of those ECM cost over $1k or 2k within 2 or 3 years. Saving money? Whats the average lifespan ofthe units? Maybe 5 to 10 year's?
The best system is keeping your older system. Everything is junk. Energy savings will be wiped out with system replacements and labor costs for repairs which the manufacturer doesnt cover.
My Parents had a 1976 Carrier round one Heat pump installed and never had one problem with it save for it needed cleaning on the outside. We replaced in 2008 with a American standard 20 seer 5 ton heat pump with twin reciprocating compressors in it. A 5 ton compressor and a 2.5 ton I think. The carrier was more reliable but the American standard has been very good. The inside coils had to be replaced in 2014 but they paid for it all and after that no problems. It runs always just about very rarely using the 5 ton compressor. I don't trust Trane/American standard anymore. They used to make there own compressors and there reciprocating compressors were bullet proof that why there prices were higher. Well I had to replace a Trane 14 seer compressor not long ago on my rental unit I own. It was a L.G. that was pulled out of it. I was mad as hell cause I was told that's why are prices are higher cause we make our own. Which was a lie . I confronted him about it and produced my recording of him telling me that, which I always do with contractors. My three year old Gibson heat pump fried itself and not worth repairing. I installed a Ruud 15 seer heat pump in my house(8900$). Well it sucks bad. They don't have a accumulator for a heat pump and no compressor belly band heater . Its very weak on heat and LOUD as hell.. I bought me a dirt cheap 18,000 btu Mini split heat pump for 700 bucks and installed it myself. My house has a open floor plan this mini split cools and heats my whole place just fine. It got 2 below zero here last winter this mini split keep the house at 69 F no problem.My power bill dropped 40 bucks a month this system is a 23 seer and is silent. NO more large systems that are loud and break and even if this mini only last three year at 800 bucks to replace the whole thing is a no brainier. I did it myself and took me about 7 hours . The heating and air guy wanted 5000 bucks to do it. Which I laughed at him , I understand making a profit but that was a ripoff .

I had a grandaire unit that lasted 17 years
I did some research and found out that the grandaire unit was made by the same people that makes Carrier
Shopping for HVAC in NY, so this is really good. I don’t know anything about ACs.
Uh, what kind of valve to be removed? Straighter valve?
Is Daikin similar to DX3SEN2410? Is it ok to use an Amana air handler.AMST24BU1400.
Do I need aprilaire? This was recommended by HVAC guy and I’m confused.

Ok:
1. The valve removal is an installation precaution, and must be put back before moving to the step after the one they are referring to.(If best practice is followed, the risk to the valve is low, but still a good idea.)
2. The DX3 you are asking about is no longer able to be sold outside of northern states due to the lower efficiency rating. They are comparing the most basic units in their area, yours has a lower efficiency tier available.
3. Possibly, the contractor should have no problem presenting you with the AHRI certification for the units that they are proposing. (That cert shows they have been tested to work together)
4. Aprilaire is a manufacturer of a number of different products, I don’t know what product they are recommending. But aprilaire is a high quality manufacturer.

Carrier is trash. Didn’t even get 10 years out of my coil and outdoor unit before they started leaking. Had to replace the entire system. Several of the local HVAC guys said those Carriers are trash and constantly leak.

@@JoeB3 yeah. It’s definitely frustrating. I had to replace the below motor on that unit and I also replaced the fan motor on the outside unit all of that before they both started leaking.

@@JoeB3 on a side note I installed an ACIQ 24000 BTU Mini Split in my garage and holy moly! It’s the most comfortable room in my house! It has no problems keeping up and it really doesn’t use a ton more electricity. Those minis are nice.
Sucks...My Lennox thats near 10 years is trash. Coils had replaced twice and they are bad again. I would like to find a good reliable a/c they don't seem to exist anymore.
Hi ! My name is Trung Le. I just purchased my whole house central air Daikin Heat Pump and air handler last week.( I made the decision caused watching your TH-cam). Heat pump Model number DZ5SEA6010AB , 5 ton, 15.2 seer. My seller told me it's 1 staged ( 1stage ) but the installer told me it's 2 stage ( 2 speed ). Could you please tell me it's 1 speed or 2 speed ? Thank you .

is goodman not so good i don't see it ?
Daikin, Amana, & Goodman are the same company. Goodman is placed at the bottom of the 3 but will have most of the qualities of the Daikin.
Goodmans all good. Any of the Big 6 brands and their budget friendly models are good or the corps wouldn't put a 10 year warranty on them.

Was considering the Rheem RA14AZ. Could you help clarify one thing though? In your video you mention it as having a SEER2 rating of 14.3 however on the Rheem website it is advertised as having a SEER2 rating of 16. This has me confused as to what the actual SEER2 rating is? Your help would be appreciated.
It should say “up to 16 SEER2”, its actually rating will depend on the furnace & coil it’s paired with.
Go with Rheem/RUUD or carrier/Bryant . Easier to maintenance, parts seem more available. RUUD suppliers do warranty so far for me. everyone else is pain anymore online waiting etc . They all break. Most important is the guys that install it that day and what attitude they have that day lol. All starts with install ductwork and filtering and maintenance

I don’t know their specifically roll out strategy, but you should get units available in Q4

Cool video. I’m currently debating between a 3 ton Lennox condenser, either a single stage with a 14 Seer or a dual stage with 18 Seer, or going with a Trane with 14 Seer but costs a tad more than the Lennox 18 Seer. My house is 34 years old and the old Trane condenser is slowly leaking refrigerant but works. Any recommendations? I heard Lennox had some qc issues the past few years.
I personally would go with the Trane unit!

My 2 cents, it’s unfortunate hard to work out the quality of the installation, but that’s going to be more impactful than the difference in those two brands. Also 2stage is going to be a comfort and efficiency boost that is worth a decent amount of weight in the consideration. But I still have a reflexive worry about Lennox coils, though the new quantum coil is supposed to be way better.
