So crazy how quickly the city changes. My Irish Catholic grandma was born in their kitchen on Eastern Parkway (1932) when the neighborhood was mainly Irish catholic. Now the family house is the main office of the Jewish school, I think. Crazy how fast a neighborhood can completely change (while kind of staying the same).

I grew up poor as fuck and we didn't have cable or a computer but when I'd go to my Grandmas house I would record my favorite songs off of Mtv and Fuse to VHS tapes and that's where I first heard king without his crown. I was hooked after that. I remember he was in this little CD collection I had. And it had this bonus DVD of a concert they had done, and believe it or not that's how I learned how to sing and play guitar. I'd watch his guitar players fingers and just keep replaying it over and over. Thank you Matisyahu. Truly and inspiration to me.

Nice to see his understanding of what a Christian is, versus what a Christian is not, is not something he understands. If God desires to choose a people for himself, he is sovereign and has the right to do so. If he requires us to believe in Yeshua for salvation, He has the right to do so. God is sovereign.

Too many people get lost with the lost on the "Chosen people" thing, both Jews and non Jews. I'll explain the most fundamental meaning of the term. In Hebrew, it's called "Am Segula". 'Am' means people, and 'Segula'? 'Segula' means either specific both 'specific' and 'capable'. As a verb it means 'to be able', and other than that term, the only other place it's used as a noun is in 'volumetric mass density', aka 'specific mass'. So it basicly means "the people who are able", "the people who are specific", or "the people who has potential". The thought behind it is that Jews has specific components in their existance that, if put to the right work, can "elevate them" to a higher realm than if other people tried. The term is used by God to expalin to Jews that if they follow his commands, he will raise them above everyone. BUT- it's a religious and a spiritual matter, and it is amorphic. Without (and other than) the religious work that's required of them, there's nothing that makes Jews more valuble than other human beings, and there are non Jews who were "elevated to this higher realm". For example, out of 10 people who were granted entry into heaven without dying (which is the greatest gift God can give), 4 were non Jews. So. Yeah. And seriously, non Jews make a much bigger fuss around the term than Jews do. Let it be.

I myself am a Conservative Jew but fall more to the Reform Movement .

It's unfortunate that, given he was raised Reconstructionist, he doesn't realize that the founder of the movement (Rabbi Mordechai Kaplan) utterly rejected Jewish chosenness and removed it from (what became his own movement's) prayerbook -- to enormous controversy back in the 1930s or 1940s. Secular Jews, Humanistic Jews, many in Jewish Renewal and Reform denominations -- they have all rejected the concept of Jewish chosenness as well. He said he's tried asking "many rabbis" about this and they talk in circles -- but he clearly was just asking orthodox rabbis.

This is so old but just to answer Sway's question on white nationalism in comparison to Jews being the chosen ones (because I don't think Matisyahu answered well and incase anyone actually wanted clarity). Two points because I'm not sure which he was questioning
The first, from the race idea: simply - Jews are not just white, they come in every color, in fact white supremacists do not even consider Jews with light skin as "white"
The second, from the superiority complex idea: if one reads and believes biblical text, it does say Jews are the chosen people. There were many peoples in ancient times and God chose to make promises to Abraham and his decedents. This does not mean that all people are not of equal worth or that Jews think they are better than anyone else, in fact much of Judaism revolves around humility. This is why it is not a religion about conversion because Jews believe everyone in the world has their unique purpose, Jew or gentile. In ancient times Jews were chosen to be in a covenant with God, this is why they are meant to do things like keep kosher/keep sabbath/etc. while gentiles do not have to and are not in the wrong for it

God is within everything, God created everything. There is nothing but God. God is 1 and not divided. God can be called what ever name just as long as you don’t view God as a concept as God is above that.
God is not a being or a concept he is above that.

It's a known thing with people that didn't grow up religious, hence lost the teachings of basic things, and then jumped on the train and started learning advanced teachings. There are logical basic reasons for everything that was asked in this video, but he answered everything with the mystical answers.

I'm Catholic and always respected Jews as God's chosen people. At the end of the day, it doesn't mean that you're better than the rest of us inherently as some sort of master race. Read the Scriptures ifyou believe that. God got fed up with Israel from time to time. It means that God chose to reveal the truth of monotheism and the Way to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Moses. And now your God is worshiped by over half of the world's population in spite of the Jews being surrounded by polytheism and being targeted, persecuted and exiled by forces all around them. The God worshiped by 1% of the world's population is now worshiped by over half of the world's population.

They had temple prostitutes where the people could come and have sex to their different gods.

The Bible does says that that the Jews are His peculiar people and that they are His chosen people. However, Christians, are just temporarily grafted into the blessings that He had given the Jews. Once Jesus, Christ comes back again, the Jews will be His chosen people again. Christians are only able to share these blessings with Israel during the Church age. May God bless you and as the book of Psalms says somewhere, "Pray for the peace of Israel".

I’m a born Jew and because I grew up Reform (Jew-lite lol), Hassies do not even consider me Jewish
But pleeeeeease don’t think they rep the Tribe. Those fools are our fringe outliers.
Real Jews are usually more sympathetic to the systematic oppression of Black Americans bc we’ve been there too. Our ancestors all came centuries of slavery and we’re all together stronger for it
Obviously I will never experience the hatred and discrimination that POC face. If you’re reading this right now, my heart goes out to you. Tho I’ve faced anti-Semitism (beaten up my skinheads, Swastikas carved on my locker, death threats), I’m white enough to benefit from privilege. I think cultures that have been oppressed historically need to come together to fight oppression that’s still very obviously here in 2019 America: Season 3

21:36 I'm a little disappointed in Matisyahu.. how he snickered at the the handle and the axe caller who wanted to know about matisyahu's metaphors. The caller got done tellin him he was his hero basically and got him through tough times and wanted to know what he meant by something he said in his song. This was his chance to ask him the question and they where gigglin about it and laughin at the guy. As a big fan and long time listener of Matisyahu i'm disappointed he would give in to the pressure of the frustration of sway and the others.

Regarding minute 7, Israel was the chosen people to bring forth the Promised Seed, through the tribe of Judah. God does not show favoritism, so Israel is not above, or greater than, they are a people "chosen" to establish the promised Seed of YHVH. see Genesis 3:15; 22:18; Galatians 3:8, 16 and Deuteronomy 7...

@Hunter your right makes sense what your saying that is definitely not the right career to choose in terms of Judaism in fact I know they don't recommend Jews to go in to the artistic word but it is still something that I've never heard of, that from being such a strong believer to change so drastically his faith in fact he divorced his wife had another child with a girl friend and is now engaged to a different girl isn't he A bit confused ? anyway sorry for this long comment lm just a bit tired that's why I'm not cutting it shorter, but if I may ask another one question I see you know a lot about Judaism are you by any chance Jewish?

Marshall Wilkinson Not just about being brought out egypt. That blood line was blessed from the 1st promise to Abraham. Even if it wasnt the first born it was about who chose to follow Hashem. Thats why He found grace in them gave them Torah. They were supposed to teach the world! They never did to this day they don't share it.

Sway and Matis a big misunderstanding of the term 'chosen people'. Chosen just means that God gave the jewish people a specific talent, the same way he gives each and every soul their own specific talents. No Matis, all souls are not the same. Matis your soul was 'chosen' by God to make beautiful music, something other souls were not chosen for. The jewish people were chosen to advocate on God's behalf. To compare that to white supremacy is a spiritual misunderstanding of immense proportions.

This is disappointing to hear a Yid talk like this & explain it in a way that opens up room for Antisemitic views to be accepted revived by badly explaining things you claim to understand so well. I don't mind shaving you beard changing clothes but to talk in a way that misleads people because you might feel burnt is unfair. The chosen people is not at all about being elevated over other Human beings. We have been chosen to hold the Torah & transmit it's knowledge teachings & live by it as an example. It's a thing of beauty not a constriction. Not attacking Matisyahu but this could have shared some light on the truth & spread clarity.
