Tim Harrell - Bear Eating Trail Camera Pickup

  • This is my first trail camera that I have had totally destroyed by a bear. I've been doing this trail camera thing for 7 years so I guess I've been pretty lucky. I got a month and a half of action on this camera before the bear ate it. In this episode, I tried to re-trace my steps from the day that I lost my trail camera lock keychain. I saw a few ghost orchids on this day and I showed you some of my favorite swallow tailed kites that I saw as I was driving in.

    Thanks for all the videos. Great work. Your trail cams has caused me to purchase my own and put it on a tree in my backyard to see the activity. I have seen deer, birds, squirrels, racoons, possums and children (my nephews, my kids, my wife playing in the yard, even caught myself cutting grass.) All good times and worth the efforts. Thanks

    Is there a way to form a u shape perhaps anchored to a bit of bark or something, so that the line is not totally around the tree? Just in case you miss that one coming back, or do not come back there, the tree will not die from the restriction of an encircling restriction? Or do you already do that? I couldn't see very well. Also, your work is amazing! How on earth you wander those swamps is beyond me. Fantastic.

      I have 8 Browning trail cams I’ve been using for 2+ years, and all but one of them has been chewed by deer, raccoon, or bear, and/or attacked by yellow bellied sapsuckers. I think there is something about the plastic, or perhaps some scent from human contact, that makes the animals curious. Out of desperation I’ve taken to wiping rubbing alcohol on the case, once it evaporates it doesn’t scare the animals, but they don’t lick a second time.

    I have a Browning trail cam and I have a video that it recorded that is totally baffling for the first 20 seconds or so, it’s just a horrendous noise with mostly nothing visible, except the occasional flash of a feather or two right in front of the camera lens. Then, for just a few frames, a yellow bellied sapsucker is seen flying away. It had perched on the steel box protecting my camera and pecked out the ultrasonic motion sensor (I have had several animals go after the motion sensors, I think the ultrasound bothers them.)

    Well I’m the guy whose been commenting on your videos for the past 2 or more years asking how yo keep the bears from destroying them. I see firsthand now. Those Browning cameras aren’t bear proof unless you put them in a steel bear safe. I’ve even had 1 browning damaged in a safe. The bear broke the plastic over the flash. I was able to fix it with a piece of clear plastic and aqua seal.

    • @Grendelmonster8u
      @Grendelmonster8u ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good question. He has a bunch of videos of deer staring at the camera and I recall the one with a bear gnawing the camera and we could see inside its mouth. At night, I think one of his cameras had a little red light and it caught the attention of a deer who stared at it. A bear can smell human scent on it, but it was out there for a while, but there’s still the smell of the camera and I don’t know if it has some kind of sound. I know for sure that bears are curious about things that are not normally part of their environment whether objects, smells and sounds. Then it checks to see if it’s edible. I think the deer notices (sees and hears well) and then sniffs to figure out what it is. A bear will smell it before it sees it. As you see, the deer does this little jump as it’s not sure what is. Good point…a bear can smell food that was once in your backpack or an empty candy bar wrapper in your car, that wonderful fruity smell of your shampoo, body wash or perfume. Electronics have smells too and they smell 100x better than us. I wonder too if those beats there ever come into contact with human food and trash.
      I think one of the raccoons briefly check it out but basically shrugged.
