You do know that the NBA isn't the only league in the world. Porzingis played three seasons in Spain before he went to the draft. So there is enough to see of a players game. The difference is how he would have adapted to the NBA. And in this case he did it better than Stephen A. Smith expected. There have been a few big men from Europe who were drafted in the Top 5 and failed really bad like Tskitshvili(i have to admit that i totally forgot about this guy), Milicic and Bargnani. Drafting a player from Europe that early is always a risk. In his case it was worth it.

Fast forward to now, this dude Porzingis is the REAL DEAL: can play above the rim, can play with his back to the basket, can shoot from the perimeter (sometimes even from the 3-point area), and perhaps most importantly, he's got that tough demeanor in him that doesn't back down from the physicality of the NBA game, something people thought he'd be struggling on given his slender frame. Scary to think he's just 20, sky's the limit for him.

Not only did he not lose his cool, once the season started, he posted great numbers and highlights including dunking over people like he was taking a leisurely stroll through the park, shooting 3's with a hand in his face and posting up against the best in the league. Reasoning for this: Previous season was the worst record in Knick history, and the Knicks were god awful the entire 2000s. The franchise has also been historically/hilariously bad at drafting, particularly with high draft picks (Frye, Renaldo Balkman, Jordan Hill, etc.). Porzingis was also relatively unknown, especially to the casual Knick fan. Plus the stigma that European bigs were going to end up as draft busts (Milicic, Bargnani). Not defending the fan behavior but it isn't like there was no reason for this to happen.
Me personally I started watching Knick basketball around this time as a kid and I loved Porzingis. Really hurt when he left.

well, when i started watching basketball there were plenty of great pointguards like isaiah thomas, john stockton,jason kidd ,magic johnson would play point guard many times but he doesnt count, gary payton, kevin johnson was pretty good, tim hardaway sr was like steph curry if you ask me, mark price,fat lever was underrated, rod strickland,dennis johnson ,allen iverson was better than kyrie and wasnt injury phrone. but my fav point guard was isaiah thomas.
