gunnar felixsson its not correct derek. if the surface containing the water is not hard enough, spikes will not form. you need a HARD surface with your water innit to have the best 4 contitions to make spikes
this has solved a mystery I wondered about since middle school. I knew that when materials heat up they expand. And when they lose heat the oppsite. So I didn't understand how come freezing a water bottle that is too full caused it to almost explode... Now I finally understand.
I'm here bc this happens in my freezer all the time and after reading about parasites found in Baltimore drinking water I thought maybe my water was contaminated with parasites and that maybe those parasites were trying to escape. I'm not sure I'm satisfied with this explanation but it's certainly more comforting than what I thought was going on.

Fin H It has some issues with the seal on the door leaking some of the air out. The actual freezer works okay, but that small leak keeps it from getting too cold. We've been talking about getting a new one, we just don't really have the time or money at the moment.

I found an ice spike this morning outside in the dog's water bowl. I took a lot of photos of it immediately cause I have never seen anything like that before. Conditions to ice spikes formation seem to be quite simple according to the video, so I'm surprised it doesn't happen regularly. Anyway, this video was much more informative and more interesting than I thought. When you say that if ice was densier than water there would be no living things in the oceans that is NOT TRUE Evolution is stronger than you think it is and if oceans turned to ice every year, then maybe fidh would simply be able to survive that the way a lot of insects spend their winter frozen in the soil or some frogs and bats can survive frozen state. I live in NW Arkansas in an old cottage with very old pipes. I use bottled water in ice cube trays to make my ice which makes my city water more palatable. I get these ALL the time, several in the same tray. They're quite pretty, but also quite delicate, probably because of the kind of tray I use. You must be using tap water, get a filter like ZeroWater, tap water isn't healthy either due to the chlorine and some cities still add fluoride which is even more toxic.
I make at least 28 ice cubes a week for about 8 years now, and a spike appears once in while, about 2 or 3 times a year. Always wondered what triggered that, thought at first it was from some kind of impurity in water, but finally found an explanation in that video. My freezer's temperature is -18°C and not ventilated, and I use tap water.
FINALLY a good explanation of this!! No wonder I get these. I use a five stage water filter for ice and have my freezer set to just below freezing to save energy vs max cooling and it does have a fan to help cool more quickly.

Water is unique in that way. It DOES get denser as it gets colder, until about 4c. Then it stars expanding.

My ice cubes would do this all the time and it freaked me out and I had no clue why it happened. So glad this video go recommended to me so I could get a nice explanation

If you make a big one you can freeze it at the right point you can cut the spike and you got a ice straw for cold water

I've been wondering for a few weeks now why my freezer was doing this. Either it happened for the first time or I noticed it the first time a couple of weeks ago. Really interesting phenomenon.
