Melatonin is a darkness hormone so in short day breeder species higher melatonin during longer nights and short days such as sheep has a stimulatory effect on GnRH secretion and thus estrus onset. Whereas higher melatonin has inhibitory effect on GnRH secretion in long day breeder species such as mare. This species thus have estrus onset during long days when melatonin secretion is declined due to shorter nights. Although melatonin is a principal cue regulating seasonality there are other cues also including temperature, humidity and many more. A complex interactions regulate seasonality and many of the mechanism are poorly known.
