I fully agree, you can here the tone of the guitar not a distortion or fuzz box. The true test of a electric guitar is can it do clean then you pour on some overdrive after. That guitar passes. I have the humbucker version of the SC 450 in white and it's amazing. Great playing.
I unboxed one today. One of the tone pots was off kilter. I had to remedy the tilt. Something was off base when i tuned it. I haven't played on junky strings since the early 70's. I put a fresh set of D'Addario's on it and it made a considerable difference. Know this: It's light compared to other Single-cut guitars. Also, note, Rudy Bressers had no problem conjuring up professional licks. You can go nutz and change out the tuners, pots, pickups, switch, nut, bridge and tail piece but why? It was $216 delivered to my door. If you're truly in love with a single-cut P90, get a PRS and make money gigging. I'm cautioning, "know when enough is enough." So, put a great set of your favorite strings on it, oil up the fingerboard, and play your ass off.
But as a base for upgrades.....neck straightness and body OK? I don't mind spending a bit over time on something solid that will improve tuning stability and playability etc.
Bought one. Mine got a messy nut so I had to fix it first. Then the guitar was very nice and good sounding for such a low price; even better than most Epiphone I've bought earlier. Main weak point is the bridge pickup (sounds good but too weak imho).
Yeah it's a very good guitar for the price. You're right about the bridge pickup probably being a weak point. That's the same for a lot of affordable guitars I find. But definitely not a dealbreaker :).
Mines hottern a 4$ pistol ! Try raisin it up to about an 1/8 from strings and you Probly need raise front too to balance pups can't believe I love stock pups just upgraded to Gotoh 501 delta 20:1 an intonated an it's 1 o my fave 1s goes good w my '55 5E5 3knob tweed pro and 57 5E7 tweed bandmaster clones * drives the front end of my non mast vol amps pretty much as good an hard as my LP w burstbuckerss or my SG w I think 590 humbuckers
@@steveshears6079 Absolutely, if the output is too low you can always try to raise the pickup a bit. For me it's more the sound of the bridge pickup that I'm not crazy about. But I often feel that way with more affordable bridge pickups.
I'm ordering one while I'm watchig this. I was holding out for an Epiphone Casino, but with the brighter HB P90s, and the right amount of EQ and reverb I can get close enough tone and any pick up and pots work will be easier to do.
You can. It's called practice. Don't be afraid to hammer the guitar. Make sounds you like and think are good. Make more sounds you think match a song you like. Just. Keep. Playing, and it will come. Learn powewr chords, barre chords, open chords, simple licks, finger exercises........have a fire and you will be rewarded, but it isn't overnight unless you're a savant, and unfortunately, those are rare. Max Ostro is one, Guthrie Govan another. Don't tlet them intimidate you....make them inspire you. many guitar players with 1/20th of their talent have made careers. (come to think of it...the simpler the better - look at pop music) You need to remember that the people you see here on TH-cam are rising to the pinnacle of their craft. We are not all made that way, but with practice we can achieve things we never, ever thought possible, and in the process we may show something in a technique that others will have their jaws dropped for. Hey I have the sake guitar I tried lowering the Pickups I know nothing about p90s but I was turning the screw on the very end but the Pickup didn't Go down but t u e t u e screw kept going down and disappeared LoL what am I doing wrong am I turning the wrong screw or what just trying to lower the Pickup. So what am i doing wrong LoL
Hi! There are two screws that can be used to lower the pickup. It should be easy to tell which screws. They are usually a little offset from the other 6 screws that are visible on the pickup. One is for the bass side and the other for the treble side of the pickup. Hopefully this helps! :)
An excellent review. Thorough - and I liked the way you played accessible material on all the pick up settings. By the way - how do you change the pick up height on P90s?
@@cooltunesmadeeasy The guitar plays really well with very little set up needed. I love the sound from the P90s the overdrive sounds are really smooth and the clean tones are great too. I took a chance an ordered a B grade from Thomann. There wasn't a mark on it when it arrived would you believe it was almost in tune right out of the box. For the crazy low price I paid it almost feels like I stole it!
@@cooltunesmadeeasy It has a slight copper tone to it. It's been years since I had a Gibson Gold Top in my hands, but I would say the HB is very slightly darker, but as I remember only a little. The back is a lovely dark reddish brown and the binding is done very well indeed.

Hi! It feels good in the hand. A very nice guitar to start out with for sure. (If you want a Les Paul type guitar that is.) You could also upgrade the pickups in time if that's something you're interested in. And for the very low price I don't think you'll regret it. Besides you can try it out and send it back if you really don't like it. Low risk :).
I changed to Guyker locking tuners. Felt a whole lot better straight away. Vansons would have been better. Not necessarily locking, just good quality high gear ratio. The stock pups are dire.
Great video. In the video the back of the guitar seems almost black? Is that just the lighting? Wondering if it is a new color scheme as they used to be a more reddish brown color. Is it transparent or a solid color on the back and back of the neck? Thinking of ordering one soon. Great playing!
Thanks! That's the lighting indeed :). The finish is a reddish brown color just like you stated. In the video it looks a bit darker than it really is. The finish on the back is not completely opaque. It looks and plays very nice. Especially considering the super low price.
I got the same guitar but mine don't sound like your you must be going through some interface software on a computer or you have a good pedal your using
What I used is mentioned in the description. Clean tones is just guitar into interface and vst amp plugin. For overdrive I used a Caline Pure Sky pedal. Besides that there's a little compression on the guitar and some reverb. Nothing special, just a regular (and affordable) signal chain.
Great review, is the body the same thickness as a gibson les paul? Or epiphone? Really interested in buying one, but they're not available at the moment
Thanks! It's been a while since I played a Les Paul (or Epiphone LP) so I would have to take a little guess. To me this one seemed to be around the same thickness, but I won't bet the house on it ;).
Neck pickup actually sounds really nice, this guitar can worth really easy from 500 to 700 euros.. If you would upgrade the pick ups, what p90 pick ups over this would you get?
It does sound very good for the price. If I were to upgrade the pickups and still keep it affordable, I'd put some Tonerider pickups in there. I very much like how they sound, and they won't break the bank.
I’ve had this guitar for a couple years now, and it’s heavy, gritty, lush, and everything a P90 guitar should be.
Thanks you for actually playing the guitar on clean so we know how the guitar actually sounds like
This should be used as an exemplar for players wanting to make really really good demo vids.
Thanks Rex, I appreciate the kind words :)

That is what I really wanted to hear. Thx. All the guitar videos are coming with triple distortion and full chaos sound, but this one.

Good to see a review of that guitar in clean tones! 🙏
