Shabani is magnificent. If he is trying to intimidate and display how powerful he is with these displays, he is doing a marvelous job. When he shakes his head, arms and body all around he reminds me of a Maori warrior doing a haka dance. So fierce.

They fill the air sacs with their breathing air, and they beat their chests with their cupped/flat hands! The Silverback usually beats his chest more than the other gorillas of his group.

Vous devez savoir que cette famille de gorilles a maintenant une enceinte beaucoup plus grande. Aujourd'hui est la cérémonie d'ouverture de l'usine de gorilles nouvellement construite. Bientôt de nouvelles vidéos seront diffusées. Bien sûr, ce serait bien si tous ces animaux pouvaient vivre en liberté et dans leur environnement naturel. Moi aussi, je souhaiterais que tous les gorilles du monde vivent dans la jungle. J'observe la famille Shabani depuis de nombreuses années et ce zoo s'occupe très bien des animaux. J'ai commenté cela parce que je sais comment Silverback Shabani aime jouer et son comportement est aussi une expression. Shabani est unique et spécial, vous le comprenez quand vous connaissez son histoire.

The head spinning face spamming is distress and going stir crazy these primates require miles of space and here he is kept in a match box.
He's conveying his stress to his group by non vocal communication. I'm sure he can see the many people come to stair and laugh daily while he and his family are trapped in a concrete enclosure with no tree's or brush as would be normal to conceal them from potential threats plus food on the go. Imagine how anxiety provoking that would be. :/
I think gorillas do not do this face slapping and pirouetting in the wild. That might prove that their enclosure is too small, diet inadequate, sunlight too weak, etc.

This is a sign of distress. The incessant beating is a sign of distress. you think a wild animal is happy living in an unnatural habitat with humans laughing and point at them? That is "happy" for them?

That's an awesome animal, such beauty and power.
Also the head thing he does. I was told it is a sign he wants to play but I think you are correct in that he is stressed living in such a confined space. This is a big family they need a more natural space so they can forage and climb etc.

My dad was in the service stationed at Johnson Air Force Base. I have the most wonderful memories and hope to go back soon before I get to old. Don’t judge what you don’t know. It was also a pretty racist statement. I’m sure your not a perfect person like most human beings.

He is very impressive. He is a really beautyfull animal. I agree that they dont belong in cages. Unfortunetly they are in danger in their natural habitat. Such a shame what we are doing to their habitat. We are the ones that are invading and detroying their terrytory. Not the the other way around. Shabani Rocks! You can tell he loves the reaction from the crowd when he displays. I just wondered, after seeing this and hearing the surrounding Chimps and Gibbons if at times Shabani Beats his chest as a call or warning to the surrounding Animals that he is the boss. Like in the wild when Silverbacks will do chest beats and growls when they hear another Silverback near their family to try and scare them away and claim his territory. I wonder if that is another reason he beats his chest at times because you can clearly hear the other animals vocalizing and calling and maybe he is responding to them at times, maybe claiming his territory and dominance. Just a thought. Whatever the reasons, he is just magnificent. Many ways a child at heart who loves to play and get affection, but a bas ass at the same time. Very cool. :-)

It's not drumming or dancing it's non vocal communication to his group. Unfortunately as smart as some humans think we are a lot of humans are incredibly dumb and don't recognize this. There are many non vocal human languages, sign, tongue clicking and many other's. We also use articulation gestures when we speak conveying emotion and so on by contextual gestures.

This Gorilla is highly restless and anxious, likely from being locked up like this.. Also Gorillas usually have much larger “pot bellies”, it makes me think they’re not being fed enough.. When a Silverback beats on their chest it means they’re showing off to try and get a girl, they’re really stressed out or they’re ready for a fight, that’s why the other Goriallas scatter when he does it.. He’s certainly not “showing off for the crowd” like some ppl are saying in here
