Shabani is magnificent. If he is trying to intimidate and display how powerful he is with these displays, he is doing a marvelous job. When he shakes his head, arms and body all around he reminds me of a Maori warrior doing a haka dance. So fierce.
He's conveying his stress to his group by non vocal communication. I'm sure he can see the many people come to stair and laugh daily while he and his family are trapped in a concrete enclosure with no tree's or brush as would be normal to conceal them from potential threats plus food on the go. Imagine how anxiety provoking that would be. :/
I think gorillas do not do this face slapping and pirouetting in the wild. That might prove that their enclosure is too small, diet inadequate, sunlight too weak, etc.

They fill the air sacs with their breathing air, and they beat their chests with their cupped/flat hands! The Silverback usually beats his chest more than the other gorillas of his group. Shabani Rocks! You can tell he loves the reaction from the crowd when he displays. I just wondered, after seeing this and hearing the surrounding Chimps and Gibbons if at times Shabani Beats his chest as a call or warning to the surrounding Animals that he is the boss. Like in the wild when Silverbacks will do chest beats and growls when they hear another Silverback near their family to try and scare them away and claim his territory. I wonder if that is another reason he beats his chest at times because you can clearly hear the other animals vocalizing and calling and maybe he is responding to them at times, maybe claiming his territory and dominance. Just a thought. Whatever the reasons, he is just magnificent. Many ways a child at heart who loves to play and get affection, but a bas ass at the same time. Very cool. :-)

If you observe closely very, closely when Shabani the silverback is chest slapping from 2:21 and on you can see the pink flesh almost as if his chest has a.) cuts in them or b.) his chest is composed of gill like flesh that too the naked eye looks smooth and unbroken. I don't know if my eyes are deceiving me but please if other viewers would let me know if they see the same thing.
It's not drumming or dancing it's non vocal communication to his group. Unfortunately as smart as some humans think we are a lot of humans are incredibly dumb and don't recognize this. There are many non vocal human languages, sign, tongue clicking and many other's. We also use articulation gestures when we speak conveying emotion and so on by contextual gestures.

This Gorilla is highly restless and anxious, likely from being locked up like this.. Also Gorillas usually have much larger “pot bellies”, it makes me think they’re not being fed enough.. When a Silverback beats on their chest it means they’re showing off to try and get a girl, they’re really stressed out or they’re ready for a fight, that’s why the other Goriallas scatter when he does it.. He’s certainly not “showing off for the crowd” like some ppl are saying in here
