A troubadour is a traveling poet/musician. Jesse James was an old west outlaw who was also a self-promoter. When he robbed a train, he wanted everyone to know his name. The message of the song is that he hasn't changed, he is who he is.
George is still married to his high school sweetheart, and I'm told is a very humble man. As we say in the Deep South, George is a good ole boy!

With over 60 #1 hits, more than any artist in any genre, he is referred to as King George. As far as what you should listen to next, I would suggest his break out hit "Unwound" from 1981, then whatever else you find. There aren't any bad George Strait songs.

This is a teaching opportunity that I would like to exploit. Mr. Strait, like myself, is from south Texas and the real thing in that he, too, was raised on a cattle ranch and is not, as the saying goes, "All hat and no cattle." It is important to mention at this point that he had been singing in dance halls in and around Texas for years before having his first recording published and released in 1981. Prior to that time, there had been on the radio, "Country and Western" music and there were "C&W" clubs and dance halls too. Great vocalists from Texas like Dan Seals, Paul Davis and elsewhere, including Michael Martin Murphey, were told to "...loose the hat!" They did and experienced success, in the 1970s, as vocalists singing popular romantic songs with orchestrations not unlike modern interpretations of compositions for Sinatra, Martin, Como and Andy Williams of the 50s and 60s. Thus, Western music was relegated to the trash heap of modern radio played music.
It as about 1980 when all that changed...in a big way! Radio stations no longer played "Western" music like Marty Robbins great western hits like "Saddle Tramp," "Tumblin' Tumble Weeds" or "El Paso." Radio stations stopped calling themselves "Country and Western" but simply "Country music stations." However, this movement which reportedly began in Nashville, disenfranchised Texas artists like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and more and together they began what became known as the "Outlaw Country" music movement. They refused to be what the Nashville publishers wanted of them and went on to play music they enjoyed and that praised Texas and the south west. They also praised their predecessors of the 40s and 50s including Ernest Tubb and Bob Wills who were famous for "Western Swing" which was dance music so popular in all over Texas and nearby states.
At the start of the 1980s, those artists who had previously put away their hats, put them back on and went on to have great success in Country music and with more than a few Western music songs including Dan Seals who, with his hat on, recorded hits like "Meet me in Montana" with the beautiful and talented Marie Osmond and "Everything that Glitters in Not Gold" and the retro sounding dance song, "Bop!" Paul Davis recorded an album of western hits and Michael Martin Murphey who had recorded a beautifully orchestrated song entitled "Wildfire!" which had been a popular music hit in the late 1970s leveraged that success to build a truly great western music singing and touring career with several western music hits including, "Tie Knots in the Devil's Tail," "Red River Valley" and the fun song "Cowboy Logic."
It is my opinion that the unknown singer from south Texas named George Strait, who refused to "....loose the hat" and who had his first country music hit in 1981, served as the catalyst for these older artists to express more fully themselves and opened doors for a whole new set of artists including Garth Brooks, Mark Chesnutt, Clint Black, Toby Keith and Alan Jackson, all of them wearing hats! All of these artists went on to have many great country music hits and many of them included in their albums at least one classic western music hit including George Strait.
Singing in Spanish went away in 1980 with Western music where it had been previously appreciated. Without a radio venue, Tejano artists sought, like Willie and Waylon, to publish their own music and charter their own radio stations with "Tejano" music. Many singing artists from Texas have had great success in Country and Western music but only a few had success singing in Spanish which includes Marty Robbins, Freddy Fender, Johnny Rodriguez, Emilio Navaira and George Strait who sang the classic Mexican romantic song, "El Rey" with beautifully articulated Spanish.
Thus, Mr. Strait, who now resides outside San Antonio, did much more than have more number one hits than any other American recording artist, more than 60, he helped to preserve Western music and Western Muisc sung in Spanish as well.
I encourage you to continue this journey into country AND western music and also enjoy some "Cajun" music from our good neighbors in Louisiana and "Tejano" music from my relatives in south Texas, neighbors with Mr. Strait.

George Subbed for Eddie Rabbit, who had gotten sick, in the early 1980's at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in the Astro Dome. This song reminds me of that night because he rode in on a horse and circled all the way that big arena and people went crazy. my wife and I were in our early thirties. We danced to many of his songs in Czech Halls and Kights of Columbus Halls to bands that covered his songs for years. Great times back then and before then. Thanks for this song.

Back in the 1950’s in country music they would refer to singers as troubadours. That word is actually a really old word that used to be used a lot but after the 1950’s and 1960’s just kind of faded away.

I went to the George Straight, Merle Haggard and Alabama concert in 1987 February. It was just after George lost his daughter. My girl friend at the time took me right before I went into the Marines. Her mother was a backup singer for Alabama I had no idea and she took me back stage. That is when Merle gave me a shot of Jack and said if you're old enough to die for me boy you're old enough to drink with me. Needless to say I took the shot, nearly puked my guts out but I stood tall. Jack is still my drink and I still remember Merle and George picking the guitar together backstage....

A troubadour was a composer and performer of Old Occitan lyric poetry during the High Middle Ages (1100-1350). Since the word troubadour is etymologically masculine, a female troubadour is usually called a trobairitz.
The troubadour school or tradition began in the late 11th century in Occitania, but it subsequently spread to the Italian and Iberian Peninsulas.

King George actually has 60 #1 songs, not 50. He can make you laugh; He can make you cry, He can make you think. This is one of my favs because of the clips when he was young, both singing & rodeoing. I dated a cowboy from Texas in the 80's (I am from Michigan) & he introduced me to George. Never liked country beyond Kenny Rogers & a few old Johnny Cash, prior to that. A troubadour is like a traveling poet/entertainer, which is why George 'rode in on a song'. They have been around for centuries. Country is about the story & you can see what logically is coming next in the lyrics, if you are really listening to the story. Suggestions are 'You look so good in love', maybe a silly one from early in his career, 'All my exes live in Texas' or 'Oceanfront property', 'I saw God today is beautiful' & my fav is one with weird timing, called 'The chair'. It is simple but like this one, just mellow.

A beautiful one is "I Saw God Today", there's a tribute to his daughter called "Baby Blue" and my one of my favorites "Run" (Take a Chevy!). I also like "So Much Like My Dad". The real cowboy songs like "Amarillo By Morning" and "I Can Still Make Cheyenne". Cheeky pick-up songs like "The Fireman" and "The Chair", love songs like "Check Yes or No" and "I Cross My Heart" and a whole pile of sad lonesome "she left me" songs...all worth a listen

George will be seventy in a few weeks. He conducts himself as a family man; something that many country singers fail .( U am referring to you: Garth Brooks, Vinnce Fill and Blake Shelton.) George and his wide, Norma have been married for over fifty years, known each other since their school days and endured many marital and personal shards j ips; including the death of their teen daughter, Jennifer. These are a few of my reasons for being a fan of George Strait.

I used to hit rodeos where he sang, along with delivering steers to his roping classic in Texas.
