A phalanx is less of a line and more of a box especially with greek hoplites and their spears because they sit behind each other with very long spears and it was extremely hard to get through with their very tight formation. This evolved into pike and shot warfare eventually which turns into the lines of Napoleonic warfare and the civil war (which is the first real time trench warfare started to be used - although it was not widespread (obviously that was ww1 and the Crimean war) iirc)
