What a brilliant game by levon. Using a rook and a bishop and four pawns to pretty much bring a king and queen to its knees. And it goes to show that you don't need a queen to win a brilliancy. Well played by levon.

More pieces but equal value beats one piece of equal value. For example two bishops and a knight are stronger than a queen.
It depends on the player.Its easy to use queen even for amateur rather than coordinating those pieces@@Iksvomid

Condolences to Magnus and family on the passing of his mother . Probably, Levon sacrificing his queen was because of the psychological impact of yesterday's game (Gukesh - Vidit ) . Also , this game has shades of Carlsen- Nepo game six in their world championship match .
Yes a sad and difficult moment for Magnus and his family. It is rather injust to die so young at 61. Condoleances to him.

Amazing game! It's so nice to see the, "old Levon" show up in a match. He outright humiliated Gukesh in this game to the point I was laughing at times.

Dang, that queen sac was somewhere between Leela and Stockfish.
Has it been that long since Levon was 2800 that people have forgotten his prodigious talents on the 8x8? It's not like his talents are fading either... the challenge is the almost superhuman competition he and others now face, competing with GM's with thousands of high level games under their belt, raised by computers and AI.
What a treat to see an old hand like Levon (just 41...lol) put on a performance like this. Bravo!

It is amazing how many great players were born into the era of Magnus. Levon, Fabi - these guys all had a shot at being world champions if it wasn't for Magnus.
That's every era. Nimzowitsch. Keres. Bronstein. Geller. Korchnoi. If it wasn't for the likes of Alekhine, Capablanca, Petrosian, Tal, Fischer, etc. they'd be WC's too.

Only one can be on top. There's a big number of players who are close, but not getting there. Although you might expect WC title coming from one to another. However the format of challenging the title is such, that it really favors a long stay for a very strong player.

Absolutely amazing. Indeed, how does he do it. He somehow envisioned the potential of the position when they basically just entered the middle game, before anyone else could. Hope Levon has many years of art left in him!

I came across Antonio’s site during the pandemic, and have enjoyed watching daily games ever since. I’ve seen hundreds of games, but this one for some reason stands out. Brilliant moves and masterful execution. Incredible game. Thank you for sharing.

This is the game of our century
This endgame is very similar to the legendary game 6 between Magnus and Nepo in their world championship match. But I think that was with knight and rook and pawns vs. a helpless queen.

Levon’s technique in just consolidating all his pieces without a queen while pushing his pawns toward promotion is masterful. That queen sacrifice was intuitive, but he knew that with the bishop pair and a rook vs an active queen and bishop was doable. The pawns were just unstoppable.

This is one of the most craziest endings I have seen. Levon literally had almost all of Gukesh’s pieces paralyzed once the slaughter started.

I guess this is the result of the education when there were no engine or sth like that.
I don't think it has anything to do with engines or education. I think it has to do with Levon's artistic spirit. Everybody has a different philosophy in life. The Romantic players are interested in not only winning but doing it in a certain way, or creating something that they see as "beautiful", sometimes at the expense of results. Probably this style will always lag a little bit in terms of results, but on the other hand it captures the imagination and interest of people when they see stuff like this.

As soon as I saw white with a fully operational bishop pair AND a rook, I was like Black is done for. There's nothing Black can do there. Every colored diagonal square is being sliced, and the rook can cover everything in between. Of course the real beauty came later tho when Levon masterfully pushed his pawns and king to victory.
