The most amazing thing about this (and someone correct me if I am wrong) is that he plays kanjira leading with his right hand. Yet I am told he played mridangam leading with his left. The photo also supports this notion. Talk about ambidexterity!! A gifted soul indeed.
Yes, he was a right-hander. Played the ganjira with the right hand. Demonstrated that the mridangam could still be managed with the left hand. But not for ordinary people, such a feat! He was a genius, and truly ambidextrous!🙏
It's not unusual at all to allow each side of the brain to decide how it will handle the percussion in hand. Left brain controls right hand. Right brain controls left hand. I am the same way with my dholki. If I don't allow my body to decide how to express the rhythm, I can't be a true vessel of God. This is the essence of yoga for holiness. 🤓
I learnt about him only yesterday and have been tumbling into the rabbit hole that his talent is , unparalleled genius in his art. Our misfortune that he passed away so early.
Born legend... gone too soon...😢 Interestingly, I've read that Shri. V.Nagarajan, who was a left-handed Kanjira vidwan was a right-handed Mridangam vidwan...After suffering a stroke, he switched over to playing Kanjira with his left hand...I have been in the audience in one of his concerts... Legendary 🙏🏻
Playing two different instruments in two different hands....! Who else can play / do this.. its only Harishankar sir. Hats off to u sir..!!! Truly speechless
You are correct. IIRC, he made the argument that Kanjira is a more difficult instrument to play because you are effectively limited to using only one hand. So to make his point, he would actually switch hands on the mridangam.

This is truly a genius. Tragedy that he passed away so early. An impossibly accurate artist. His time cycles are unbelievable.

Why he died very early?
What is the reason for his very early demise
Guruji had a severe bronchitis problem. He passed away due to some treatment that was not suitable for his physical and medical condition.
