  • Although this dance was first published only in 1690 in the Recueil de Plusieurs Vieux Airs by André Danican Philidor l'Ainé, who was in charge of the Bibliothèque de la Musique du Roi, it certainly sounds much older than that with a distinct XVI century flavour. After all, it was named a VIEUX air, wasn't it?
I decided to play it to accompany a few photos my wife and I made while touring Europe in the summer of 2023.
Even though some of the pictures were taken in Carcassais, Nîmois, Arlés, Tarasconnais and Pont du Gard, which are not exactly Avignonnais, I'm certain the popularity of the dance was enough to disregard the regional boundaries.
    Enjoy!
    The instruments I used:
    Balalaika: Balalaiker (doubled strings)
    Soprano recorder: Mollenhauer 1003d
    Alto recorder: Mollenhauer Waldorf 19242
    Tenor recorder: VEB/Musima Jupiter
    Bass recorder: Yamaha YRB 302-BII
    Guitar: Fender CD60-S
    Bass guitar: Ibanez AEB10-BK1202
    Bongos: PP
