I just love her - if you find her somewhere on TH-cam and I don't love whatever it is - I'll eat my hat. (Scam alert: This commenter does not own a hat.).
@@davidhynes I assume you mean Cape Breton Island? I've never heard it referred to as "the rock." And I thought I knew a decent amount about Cape Breton culture. God knows I've watched enough videos.
This is unquestionably one of the greatest fiddlling videos ever. They look like they're having a blast. The tunes and the virtuosity are as good as it gets.
That's Patrick Gillis and he's not showboating: he's got deep heart and soul. The recording doesn't do him justice, but he plays right in the pocket. And Cape Breton musicians don't treat other musicians as "just sidemen." They are very generous and refreshingly non-egotistical. They are keepers of a living tradition.
Andrea plays astonishingly wonderful music. Over the last few years she has been playing beautifully and brilliantly at a level few musicians ever reach. How lucky are those who hear her concerts. Andrea Beaton is red hot, she rocks her reels effortlessly. She's also a beyond marvelous piano player and mighty fine banjo picker. What a talent and what a music hero. Someone please give her a one way ticket to Californ I A.
I'm not sure how often I've watched this set over the years but I still well up inside when it comes to the change from High Drive to Hull's. Just when you think it's impossible to inject more energyinto the set - it goes off the scale! Thank you.
Andrea Beaton, you are the best fiddler to ever come out of Cape Breton Island. I have lived here all my life and I say, you are damned well the best. I just love this tape and play it on the computer over and over. You are the best, the best, the best.
Hey Wafaloo- I don't know if you are a musician or not... but it means enforcing the music's rhythm just exactly where it's needed- being right in there so that it ties the music together at crucial moments... helps the listeners and dancers feel it in their bones.
I just love Celtic music and have just been introduced to this stuff and my skin is covered in goose pimples. Makes me weep. I also love the pipes and drums, Bodrhans and Hurdy Gurdys but this Breton music is awesome. Gotta go there some time before I die.
I am over the moon proud to have a Mom from Cape Breton and myself Nova Scotian. A magical place with magical music and more love than any one person can handle! - Lise
Okay so this is what I found out about that first strathspey: It is known as Christy Campbell Strathspey and The Miller of Drone. It would be much simpler if I could just go up there and ask! ;)
Andrea's dad plays fiddle "backwards" too - find the Andrea/Kinnon "house party" video - watching them bow in parallel face to face on a piano bench is trippy and amazing.
Andrea, Andrea you are such a gem.You played 12 mins straight and didnt crack a sweat.Just effortless and never missing a note. And a great backing band. You would have to be a grade A douche bag to dislike this but i see there are two listed above. This should be mandatory listening for every traditional music lover-no, not you two butt smears.
Jeez. I LOVE this set, it's infectious, lifts my spirits... but different people appreciate different musics. If someone doesn't like this, then... they don't like this. Calling them "butt-smears" says NOTHING about the real them, but it gives a good indication of who YOU are, gorfitz. (Or were seven years ago.)
I just love her - if you find her somewhere on TH-cam and I don't love whatever it is - I'll eat my hat. (Scam alert: This commenter does not own a hat.).
I commented before but I have to say it again: This is one of the finest TH-cam sets ever of Cape Breton fiddling.
I agree 100% that it gets your feet stomping.
Being from the rock I love this music also.

100% agree - it’s been my goto for years! So great!

Which instrument are you referring to? Guitar?
That's great.I totally agree.Cape Bretoners are great people!

Love the silhouettes of the peoople in front of the stage dancing a square set.
What is better than a virtuoso musician happily playing beloved music? NOTHING!! This entire group is awesome!!!
I love it when other musicians get excited about the fiddle player. I can totally relate. Awesome !!!
My Dad always said whichever Cape Breton fiddler you were listening to ...you would say they are the best ...Andrea Beaton is a prime example ...

OMG, this is wonderful.
Beautiful . The playing too. Thanks for this.
Andrea you are such a beauty...
The very able Andrea has outdone herself and no wonder. She has a "dream band" behind her. Hard to beat this scenario.
First tune is called 'Christy Campbell', for those who were wondering - or confused!
Superb, wonderful, well played by all.

Wonderful.

Love listening and watching Tracy (Dares) MacNeil on piano. So relaxed, tasteful. With chording. Left hand work.

Respect to Nova Scotia, Cape Breton (and PEI)!
I agree. I noticed last summer how lousy some of the sound equipment at the GC is.
Absolute genius!

Wonderful. Thanks. Had the pleasure of attending the Celtic Colours festival some years ago... highly recommended.
I will never not love this video. I’m probably responsible for a lot of the views on it. 😆
Me too!
Tune at 2:53 is 'Lucy Campbell' strathspey. The reel afterwards is 'Sandy Cameron'
Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just saw here today in Nova Scotia, and I am a fan!! Can't get the music out of my head.

Okay so this is what I found out about that first strathspey:

Aha! I've never heard it expressed that way before.
Beauty beyond compare.
fking awesome
I think the tune at 7:43 is called The High Drive. Nicely done!
Edward Delaney Yeppers...High Drive it is...and lovely! One of my favorite pieces, actually...Ms. Beaton's a pro, for sure!
Composer?
Gordon Duncan, a piper from Scotland
That's my girl!!...wow!!...
awsomeeeeeeeeeeeee.......
Wow she can play !!!
Such a pretty girl, such fun music.
801as! Yer the best, ye lot are!
The first tune isn't Lime Hill it's Christie Campbell's
Is there anything that can compare to the Cape Breton style of fiddling?
No...
Cape Breton Piping
No. Not ever.
Who the hell are the 15 who didn't like this??
Jealousy is a terrible thing ... !
Is anybody could give the names of the different tunes payed please ?
"plays right in the pocket"...? What does that mean?
😄He's playing upside down and left handed........?? Doesn't miss a chord........GREAT!!!
Does anyone know the name of the first tune she plays? I know it by ear but I would like to know the name!
Can I use it as my background music for my video
Ask Andrea, I'm sure she won't mind, her twitter is @andiecuts :) gl my friend!
If your not chair dancing you're not listening.
Does anyone know the name of the song that starts at 8:16?
Did anyone notice the guy playing guitar up side down must be left handed the strings can be changed arount to accomadate left handed players

She makes Ally Bain sound like a novice.
LOL! :-)
No the first tune is NOT Lime Hill and sounds nothing like it!!
4 people are deaf and need ear transplants!
What about drums? You forgot to play drumss ???
P
Anyone else feel like the guitarist was just mashing his strings rather than producing music?
no - including all the biggest CB fiddlers who have him back them at the festival.
And watch her bouncing at 3:49...
18 didn't like it..................hahahahahahahahahahahahahaahah.........!
22 now ... daoine gun anam 'sam bith! :-(
Fantastic playing, but what's with the lefty guitar showboat. Just a sidesman, eh.
Huh? How exactly is he showboating...?
