Slightly open step ? Meaning ?
When you're pitching straight on, your body is turned completely perpendicular to the batter. Slightly open means she wants you to move your foot back a little so that part of you is facing the batter
Miranda Ward It's not clear what you mean by "move your foot back"... I think she means that the foot should land somewhat to the left (not "back") of the perpendicular line going towards the pitcher, if your a rightie, - thus opening up your body to the batter (and putting more torque (thus, spin)) onto the ball). The foot being too much to the left of this perpindicular line, she mentioned, is "now" illegal. And, I wonder why... Was this a too-powerful pitch for competive softball? (Great video!)
Tom Fieselmann Hi! what she meant by illegal is that you have a thing i would call a "pitcher's box" and it's working like a batter's box, it's not as wide but still, if you put your foot outside of it, you pitch is illegal. I think it's made to prevent overly big effects. There is not a lot of fields with it but it's in the ISF rules. Hope you understood, not english native here :)
Ok, thanx!
She means that when you pitch like a fast ball, you’re completely aligned with the plate. But when throwing a screwball, you almost wanting to take a tiny step towards your glove side, giving you more room to come into you waist.
I'm a high school pitching coach, and not too many girls actually throw fastballs. We just reinforce "fastball mechanics" in practice for speed and mechanical consistency if you will. I have two pitchers that throw screw balls, and they both do not throw them flat...one of them slightly rises and one drops. And none of my pitchers change their stride ever....just their posture, grips, and release points. Most of the girls I see are similar to that....don't know what pitchers you've seen. ???
Don't change their stride? The way she teaches this pitch is exactly how my daughter's retired division 1 pitching coach taught her, to excellent effect. Stride slightly to the left to open hips a little, helps with throwing this pitch, without it it is harder to start over the plate.
Softball pitching looks really complex. And honestly, the ball is really anything but soft so it never made much sense to me. I stuck with baseball. Its alot safer and everything is much easier to pick up on naturally. Pitching like that cannot be good for your arm either.
I love you Torrey Brooker
