  • Fans of Dance With Wolves and Tombstone cannot miss this larger-than-life western movie, starring Robert Shaw. After his triumphs in the Civil War, General George Armstrong Custer becomes one of the most renowned military figures of his time. But he infuriates as many politicians as he impresses, so he ends up with the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of Little Bighorn, fighting Crazy Horse's Sioux warriors. Custer's sense of pride will overshadow his dedication to duty with disastrous consequences...

Robert Shaw was a very underrated actor he played many great roles in the Battle of Britain, Battle of the Bulge and of course Jaws to name but three.

I remember watching this movie as a child and remembered what most impressed me: The general riding on his horse constantly charging enemy guns in the intro and basically winning the war singlehandedly (even as a child I thought this might have been a little bit overexaggerated) and the scene where the general drills his troops, and everybody except him and another guy passes out before the drill was ended, LOL.

I've watched few movies about Custer, in some he shown as hero, and in some he's shown as deserved what became of him. even I heard remarks like Custer got Custard.

Not a great movie. But fun fact: At 1:20, the sequence with the timber chute was filmed in Sweden, my homecountry, the only place where there still was one functioning, it seems.

Custer had an eventful, colorful, and dramatic life. Why do filmmakers always need to fictionalize it?

Custer was mostly an adventurer, and to one side he was a hero, and to the other he was a murderer. This movie is a Hollywood fairy tale. It is better to focus on historical data. Example: "Son of the Morning Star: Custer and the Little Bighorn" is a documentary story by writer Ivan S. Connell about the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

@@sofiaoldyreva3505 If you were paying any kind of attention, you would have noted how my initial comment was lamenting the way Hollywood made 'fairy tales' out of history. Yet, for all of that, you're advising ME to read serious historical literature instead of "tabloid comics" and "Hollywood fairy tales"?! Are you a joke?
You're the one who called George Armstrong Custer a murderer, and that appellation for Custer comes directly from the sources you mentioned - media biases, tabloids, and Hollywood fairy tales such as: "Little Big Man", "Fort Apache", "The Glory Guys", "Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman", "The Last Samurai", and dozens of other films and television shows.
Here are some bonafide historic facts for you, directly from serious historical literature and sources:
      - George Armstrong Custer never murdered anyone in his life.
      - Before he attacked Chief Black Kettle's village along the Washita River in 1868, Custer specifically ordered his men not to kill the Cheyenne women and children.
      - Custer's orders were to "kill or hang all warriors, and capture the women and children"
      - Cheyenne women and children were killed at the Washita, but many scholars believe Custer's Osage Indian scouts were responsible for the deaths of most of these noncombatants. See, the Osage and Cheyenne were hereditary enemies, and when it came to killing, Natives were seldom discriminate - men, women, children, all fell beneath their tomahawks.
      - At one point during the battle (Washita), many of the Cheyenne women and children were placed inside empty lodges for their own safety, and Custer even ordered some of his men to guard over them.
Facts such as these are a historic reality. But do you see any of this realism in your Hollywood fairy tales? Nope. In your Hollywood fairy tales, Custer is the arch-fiend, the maniacal murderer, the killer of innocent women and children, and so on and so forth.
You're not going to argue with me, eh? Well, of course not. Why would you? Your ignorance regarding this subject would render any kind of debate impracticable.

Although Custer was a fool at the Little Bighorn he was a good military strategic in his own way if you would have waited for the other troops to arrive I believe he would have whooped Sitting Bull and his Braves although it didn't happen that way what he basically did was suicide for this seventh cavalry all do I give him credit for making his last and the way he did he was the only one alive and he wouldn't let them take him it was a massacre that shocked the whole entire West you'll go down in history and not giving up without a fight

Custer was mostly an adventurer, and on the one hand he was a hero and on the other he was a murderer. This movie is a Hollywood fairy tale. He got what he deserved. For most white Americans, the events of November 27, 1868, on the Washita River were a battle. and for Native Americans, a massacre. In the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the opposite is true. Who is right? It seems to me that when I someone... - it's erotic, and when it comes to me, it's pornography. 😊
