By chance, I just found this channel. Thanks for your videos, Dr Guo.
A friend of mine says that cgtn and some videos made by westerners working in China or visiting China are a good start to learn what China really is, his achievements, his rich culture, his people, and I agree.
I note that a recent video from Global Times is about the same story of Li Hua.
    Interesting, moving story, indeed.

I lived in the US for over ten years, a lot of my conception of the west were also wrong. I find that the US is actually far more barbaric on a systemic level than is depicted through the propaganda. Individual Americans are usually fine, but their collective culture, systems, social mores and values are actually not really that good, moral or even useful.

I grew up in US and these words come to mind: aggressive, obnoxious, boldly arrogant

    • @kenoding118

Actually, I learned English in China and was already speaking it fluently (more or less like I do now) when I came to the Netherlands at the age of twenty. Like most children in China, I started learning English when I entered middle school at the age of twelve. English was my favourite subject in middle school, and I was very eager to learn it. In fact, I was so interested in English that after graduating from high school, I went on to study English at Beijing Foreign Studies University, one of the most prestigious universities in China with a focus on foreign languages. I was fortunate to have very good teachers (all of whom were Chinese, by the way) and talented fellow students at the university. As a result, my English improved significantly during my studies there.
Your comment, along with the recent trend of learning Mandarin in the US and many other countries due to the Rednote discovery, has inspired me to make a video about my journey as a Chinese person learning English (and two other languages) and how learning these three languages completely changed my life. I hope this video will motivate international Mandarin learners to keep going and never give up, no matter how hard it may seem to master the language. I’m working on the script and hope to finish the video in one or two weeks.
Since posting my video about Li Hua’s letter and my personal journey, I’ve been receiving many kind comments like yours. I’m really grateful for all the support. To express my thanks to everyone who supported my Li Hua’s letter video, I’ve just uploaded a new video where I sing a Chinese song about friendship. Thank you. I've been following a number of TH-camrs and other on Twitter to get other perspectives on China. I realise what is posted in western media is mostly propaganda. It's great to see the Red Note phenomena breaking through this propaganda. May it long continue!
I plan to visit China, if not this year, then next year. Will join Red Note and start learning some basic Mandarin.
Thanks for this video. Very beautiful and eloquently stated.

Thank you very much for taking the time to watch this video and leaving such a kind and thoughtful comment. It’s wonderful to hear that you’re exploring different perspectives on China and recognising the value of direct communication through platforms like Rednote. I couldn’t agree more-seeing these barriers of misunderstanding slowly breaking down is so encouraging.
It’s fantastic that you’re planning to visit China! It’s such a diverse and fascinating country. I hope you’ll have an amazing experience. Learning some basic Mandarin will definitely add so much to your trip-it shows respect for the culture and helps you connect with locals.
Speaking of learning Mandarin, since so many international users discovered Rednote, there's a growing interest in learning Mandarin in the US and many other countries. I wholeheartedly support this trend.
On the other hand, as a native speaker of Mandarin, I do understand how difficult it can be for international learners to master this language, especially given the different tones and the thousands of Chinese characters. I'm afraid this may discourage some people from starting to learn Mandarin or giving up at certain point. That's why I'm working on my next video, in which I'll share my personal journey and explain how learning three foreign languages (English, Dutch and Korean) completely changed my life. I hope this will help Mandarin learners stay motivated and never give up. I'll be happy to let you know when this new video is posted.

If I was writing Li Hua a letter I would warn him not to be too vulnerable to Americans because they will break your heart. They come across very sweet and genuine but it's extremely dangerous to trust them. Those tears are self delusional and often
    hypocritical.
Americans want to be liked but self interest is always first even if it's not in their best interest.
A lot of POC have found out particular after the most recent election. Some POC were convinced the new government would treat them ethically while saying otherwise.
The Chinese are brilliant people. Their country is ancient. Unfortunately many Americans really afford you very little respect and acknowledge no injustices on their part.
Just be very careful about taking this outpouring at face value because this attitude is nothing like how they're treating people right here in this country even as citizens.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment! You're absolutely right in saying that we cannot unsee what we have seen. It's indeed extraordinary and heartwarming how Chinese users have been so welcoming to international users on Xiaohongshu.
As to my videos, I have posted them on TH-cam and TikTok, but not on Xiaohongshu. This is mainly because I have a very busy and demanding legal practise, which leaves me only very limited time to make and post content on social media. Posting on Xiaohongshu will require at least making bilingual subtitles and some other adjustments. Even with AI tools, it will likely still take more time that I can afford. I guess my content would probably contribute more to the intended goals on TH-cam and TikTok than on Xiaohongshu, since on Xiaohongshu there are already a lot of Chinese users sharing content about real life of Chinese people.

    Dear Li Hua,
I hope this letter finds you well. It has been far too long since you first reached out to me, and I owe you an apology for my silence. I want to express my gratitude for your patience as well as my regret for not responding to you sooner.
I feel it is only fair to be honest with you. I was raised in a culture that often portrays China-and by extension, its people-as adversaries. This belief has shaped my understanding of the world in ways I didn’t even realize until recently. But now I’ve come to see that those ideas were not only untrue but also unfair.
The more I’ve learned, the more I’ve come to understand that people everywhere share so much in common-our hopes, dreams, struggles, and the desire for connection. I deeply regret letting misconceptions stand in the way of what could have been a meaningful exchange between us.
Your letters have reminded me that beyond politics and propaganda, there are individuals-real people with their own stories, thoughts, and kindness. It’s a privilege to finally write back to you, and I’d love to hear more about your life, your thoughts, and what inspires you.
Thank you for your patience with me, Li Hua. I’m ready to listen and to learn, and I hope this is the start of a genuine friendship between us.
Warm regards from your American penpal.

A lot of Americans are choosing to stay on XHS, not everyone is gullible enough to fall for the American president’s ploy

The deal is not yet done. There is a 90 days extension for a deal/ownership purchase to happen. Which isn't guaranteed yet. Basically if tiktok does not want to sell they can still shut down after 90 days.

@@JC.72 I hope TikTok doesn't sell out to anyone and simply shuts down.

@ TikTok never brought American and Chinese people together. That's what Red Note is doing now, though.

I believe it's important to approach others with kindness and understanding. Comments like these only create division, and I hope we can focus on promoting positive and respectful conversations. I appreciate the opportunity to share my perspective, and I encourage open dialogue built on mutual respect.
