- Here is the great Ethel Merman singing Cole Porter's ballad "Make It Another Old-Fashioned Please."
The song was written in 1940 for the musical "Panama Hattie," which starred Miss Merman. This video is from a 1965 BBC special "An Evening with Ethel Merman."
I love this performance - especially the way she winds up the song by leaving out the orange, the cherry, and the bitters and going for the straight rye. Cole Porter and Ethel Merman - what a fantastic team.
An amazing performance -- artist and band. Merman is at the top of her game here. The way she annunciates "double" at 0:18 and "rye" at 1:50 is perfect! Love the arrangement and the orchestra.
Cole Porter a Genius.
That's the way to sing the mother song Ethel!
Glorious style
awesome song
Cocktail information…..The last line mentioned bitters, orange, cherry and rye. That’s the common ingredients for the Old Fashioned cocktail. Typically in modern times, bourbon is used instead of rye but rye can still be found in some bars
The One and Only…Berlin and Porter loved her…that’s enough for me.
Did Ethel Merman ever sing a romantic ballad?
Sure she did..
Embraceable You in Girl Crazy
I Get a Kick out of You in Anything Goes
Down in the Depths on the 90th Floor in Red, Hot and Blue (which is more a torch song)
Do I Love You in DuBarry was a Lady
They Say It's Wonderful in Annie Get Your Gun
Lost in His Arms in Annie Get Your Gun
The Best Thing For You (Would Be Me) in Call Me Madam

Small World in Gypsy
@@Ellimir Thanks for that list. I always admired Ethel Merman. I saw her on the "That Girl" DVD and she was really sweet.
Amazing, such command of her space. Bet she wishes she wore sleeves though.
I bet she wouldn’t have given two shits about your opinion of her arms.
@MikeA15206. Nah, the studio lights would have kept her warm.
