I remember distinctly when this tune came out. I was 16 and would go to all the Philly dances where this was always played at least once a night. We did the stomp to it and boy was it fun to dance to!
I have reel to reel tapes of the roy adams shows from back then. he was on so late at night that I would set the machine and let it run, commercials, newscasts and all. also have gus gossert tapes
A small hit in Philly in October,1963. Great song, follow up was called I Want To Be Your Boyfriend was excellent too. It came out in early 1964 and never got the push it deserved for obvious reasons.
To be honest I have never heard this song before , I have never heard of any of the songs that PJ posts on his channel? But I love this & all the others. Doo-Wop kinda missed out here in the UK in the late fifties & early sixties, I guess I'm making up for lost time. Thanks for all these great songs.
Yes Linda, there is so much going on in this song, the complexity of the voices makes it a great tune. In 1972, when I heard Every Day of the Week by the Students, and I heard sooooo much going on in that tune, I knew I had discovered the tip of the ice berg. Been hooked since.
Roy was born September 20th, 1950, in Saginaw, Mi and began singing at the age of 12. Discovered by Lloyd Price, he signed Roy to his label. Roy just passed away September 6th, 2015 in Saginaw.
@@lamper2 Lloyd Price and Harry Logan were good songwriters. They wrote most of the songs released by Price's Double-L Records. Those that they didn't, they gave proper credit. i don't think they "cheated" a 12-year-old kid, who walked in their door alone. His parents signed the contract.
I knew Lloyd Price for a while; great guy and seemed like a straight shooter. Talented as hell, too. Sorry to hear that Roy Tyson died so relatively young.
Super upbeat doo wop of the kiddie sound like Frankie and his brother Louie Lymon Little Butchie Saunders and the rest of the that sound grt feel bounce music
I first heard this two decades ago when I was on a random record search at a flea market. The closest I got to owning this gem was buying and downloading it from Napster. This is a massive doo wop record in the tradition of Frankie Lymon. Little Roy had some chops on him. It was a pleasant surprise to hear it was on Lloyd Price's Double L records. Good on you guys for preserving this one.
"I'm So Young" by The Students was recorded in 1957. But The Students weren't The only group that sounded like that. There were The Schoolboys, Chanters, Lewis Lymon & Teenchords, all copying Frankie Lymon & Teenagers' success. The group behind Roy is excellent. I wish I knew who they were. I'm certain that they must have been a New York group, as Lloyd Price and his partner (Logan) operated out of New York,& "Elevator Music" was Van McCoy's,-they used him as an arranger. He also worked in NY.
If you like this, you should also hear "I Want To Be Your Boyfriend". It was also on Double-L, had Van McCoy as producer and arranger, and used the same great backing group.
Super sound. Lloyd Price personally gave me my copy (his label) and it was played in Providence, RI, but sadly didn't hit. There was a later issue of the same track credited to Gregory Howard, if someone knows the story behind that, I'd be curious to know it. Thanks to Briancalledbrad for posting the lyrics!
Thank you. The comment about Leroy King of the Students was interesting, because I thought they sounded alike. I have two four-CD Doowop collections and I'd never heard of Roy Tyson. What year was "I'm So Young" by the Students recorded?
This gem is still being played,WATD, Marshfield ma. Oldies weekends..love it !!

I remember distinctly when this tune came out. I was 16 and would go to all the Philly dances where this was always played at least once a night. We did the stomp to it and boy was it fun to dance to!
Beautiful clean copy!
Wow what a great tune! Why oh why did this kind of music go away not long after this tune?
First time hearing this great one was on Roy Adams late Sunday night early morning doo wop show in NY in 1971
Both songs very nice! Reminds me of Leslie Martin of the Schoolboys and of course Frankie Lymon.
Great tune. Thanks for the post.
The imperials sang back up on this recording.
Little Roy Tyson sings his heart out.
Ahh. Cool. I guessed he was the writer, but that was as far as I got. Fun tune.
I have reel to reel tapes of the roy adams shows from back then. he was on so late at night that I would set the machine and let it run, commercials, newscasts and all. also have gus gossert tapes
Never heard this one before. Great song.
Classic. Love the bass

A small hit in Philly in October,1963. Great song, follow up was called I Want To Be Your Boyfriend was excellent too. It came out in early 1964 and never got the push it deserved for obvious reasons.
Ooh...one of my all time faves! I love this song!!
A classic on Loyd Price's Double L record label and also his composition!?

Has to be one of the ten best schoolboy sides ever IMO...classic
Had to listen to it again. Love it!
A great oldie,
This is just a great feel good tune. Not only the lead but the background too and especially the first tenor. What a great song!

i wonder if Price just stuck his name on the credits or if he really co wrote this song

Another good stomp record. Brings back memories.

A fabulous uptempo doo wop wonder with perfect melody
Now that is gold! So many people cut out the newscasts and commercials when they recorded radio shows
Big Philly favorite that Jerry Blavat played relentlessly in 1964.

Excellent!
Fantastic song!
Absolutely Classic Rock & Roll !!!. Thank You Lloyd Price and PJDooWop for the memories !!
Good song
Glad you're enjoying the posts. I wish this music was played more out in the UK

Big Philly hit at the dances in the fall of 1963.
Boy do I remember St, Joe,s Saturday night.
Kiddy lead Doo Wop at itt best
Super sound. Lloyd Price personally gave me my copy (his label) and it was played in Providence, RI, but sadly didn't hit. Roy sounds so much like the lead singer of the Students. Is there any connection you know of?
great song
1965 woodland dance Friday nites , Buy beer at the “top” Drink it in the golf course, then go tear it up , at the fire hall !
Put me on the list of thumbs up!!!
It has the words "Elevator Music" on the label! :-D
JUST GREAT!

THUMBS UP ON THIS
should have had more airplay in '63 since the kid sound was still making it like Killer Joe-the Rocky Fellers. Still have a mint conditioned copy
No. Although they sound similar, Leroy King is the lead of the Students. By the time this came out Leroy was about 20
Great
Sounds a lot like Babalu's wedding day by The Eternals!
Hot Jam
I'm guessing he was about 12 or 13
How old was Roy when he recorded this?
12.
Haha! That's funny
👌👌
Sounds a lot like a young Frankie Lymon.....🥴
if I remember right this label 2 as owned by Lloyd price.
You're welcome
