    For many years, as an adjunct to controlling hypertension I only looked at the sodium content on the food labels. I made the mistake of not watching the carbohydrate content of foods as listed on the food labels. Sodium restriction did nothing, but low carb / ketogenic diet did.

    I noticed less swelling in my fat sausage finger when I started eating healthier, non-processed foods, and not adding salt most of the time to my foods. I cook my own food mostly at home. Processed chips are high in sodium and I stopped eating those as well because I used to eat them daily. I feel better with less sodium in my diet.

    The only time my BP goes up is when I occasionally eat out and I usually prepare myself by drinking electrolytes with high potassium and lemon water. Since I started doing intermittent fasting/low carb my BP has been good. I mostly cook at home with the Himalayan salts that have minerals and I’m not afraid to use salt anymore.

    Is Himalayan salt better for diabetics

  • @noellaribeiro6520
    @noellaribeiro6520 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Good day Doctor!
    All your reasons for cutting back on sodium levels or salt to reduce blood pressure is fine.
    But what about diabetics, who lose a lot of sodium in frequent urination. Also those who suffer from frequent diarrhea or vomiting. They also expel a lot of sodium and water.
    Don't you think that increasing the salt levels for the above people (unrefined salt or sea salt) in their daily diet could replenish the lost sodium in frequent urination, stools and vomit, could restore their electrolyte balance?

  • @bwhite3872
    @bwhite3872 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Men - add salt, but make sure you eat a sensible diet. Less than 1OO grams carbs per day. Eat about 8O to 12O grams of protein per day. Plus eat lots of good fats (olive oil, coconut oil, salted butter, 35% whipping cream, etc). The Russians did some really nasty studies on salt intake. Men should eat about 6 grams of salt but women should not eat more than 2.5 grams of salt. When you eat salt eat potassium chloride with your salt. Put salt in your coffee also. Please note I have a kidney cyst since I was 9. It is ok to have protein in the urine . When the kidneys cannot process the protein they dump it, but according to my kidney doctors I have had since I was 9 a high protein diet was better for me. Lots of salt, high potassium foods, half a pound of beef in one sitting, and my 25 hour fasting blood sugar used to be 2O.6 and now on a 26 to 31 hour water fast my blood glucose number is 5.8 (x by 18 for US numbers). I increased my salt intake, increased my potassium chloride intake, increased my protein intake, increased my fat intake, but down my carbs to about 1OO grams per day and cut our breads and pastas from my everyday eating. I don't do keto, or some crazy carnivore diet either, but I enjoy things like hummus, artichokes, barley, lentils, and veggies (even potatoes), plus eggs occasionally (I am allergic to them or I would eat them allot more as I like them). My uric acid levels used to be high but are now normal. Salt is your friend (if you are a grown man), but according to the Russians whom did some voodoo science studies using their own troops women should never eat allot of salt. It isn't salt sensitivity (it really is salt poisoning). Men can eat buckets of salt if they are eating a potassium rich balanced diet, women and small children need to be careful around salt. My blood pressure is also normal now that I am eating more salt, and more fat. I drink on either between 2 to 3 litres of water per day and I enjoy balsamic vinegar with my food along with Siagon cinnamon, turmeric, black pepper, cayenne pepper, ginger, cardamom, ground mustard, black cummin, nutmeg, curry, oregano, parsley, methi, ground poppy seeds, and yes coffee too.
    PS: I am on no prescription drugs, or insulin, just herbs, spices, vitamin and mineral supplements and sensible eating.

    Some of the desire for salt"y" is also what the person gets used to. American restaurants, esp the fast food takeouts pile on the salt to increase sales. So growing up on that makes people think a healthy amount of salt tastes unbearable. But after sticking to a low salt diet for awhile, your tastes will adjust and healthy amounts eventually taste fine.

    You said many times "cutting back on yor salt intake" but you said what cutting down means. I hardly ever touch the salt shaker but I know that there is sodium in many of the foods I eat so what do you consider normal salt intake and what would be "cutting down" ?

      If you are a man 6 grams of salt (not common table salt), plus eat potassium rich foods, and potassium chloride along with a balanced sensible diet. Women should never consume more that 2.5 grams of salt per day. Women and small children can be poisoned by salt intake. It isn't salt sensitivity - it is salt poisoning! Salt intake must be balanced with magnesium and potassium intake. In order to properly metabolize zinc as an example you need to take magnesium. In order to properly metabolize calcium you need both potassium and magnesium. In order to absorb and utilise vitamin C properly you need sodium (salt) and CoQ1O. You need to eat a balanced diet and when taking vitamin and mineral supplements you need to make sure they can be taken with food and properly absorbed. I myself take magnesium citrate, calcium citrate, potassium citrate, and other citrates. I also take certain vitamins (B1 and B12 plus Biotin) in mega doses while others being very careful not to take too much as some vitamins have very low safe upper limits (like folate). EaT a high fat , high protein diet with a moderate carb intake of under 1OO grams per day and in 6O days see how you feel and what your blood work is actually like. Also do a 1 or 2 day water fast on a monthly basis but get your blood work done both before and immediately at the end of the fast before you break your water fast and one week after your fast so you know how your body responds to the serious stress of a 1 to 3 days water only fast. Don't do fasts without blood work being done. Medically supervised fasts are generally safe and beneficial. Also when you break a fast carefully refeed regardless of the length of your water fast. I only do one dry fast per year and that is on the Day of Atonement. Otherwise I only do water fasts. Hope this is helpful.

    Please address hydration and the importance of salt
    For example if you cut back on salt, water can only be retained with respect to sodium levels
    Hence low salt can cause dehydration
    Dehydration causes low blood volume which makes heart rate increase to compensate
    Increased heart rate causes heart stress
    Dehydration or hyponatremia kills a lot of elderly
    Salt appetite is very sensitive
    Eg eating salty snacks is rewarded
    Once enough salt has been consumed the salt desire finishes
    Salt also provides more tolerance to heat
    Another factor that kills the elderly
    Why if sodium is not important - it is the first mineral that is measured in blood tests
    And the use of saline drips as standard care in hospitals
    Please address hyponatremia in the elderly

    I got sent to a Cardiologist to do a stress test after cutting all salt and still i had a high blood pressure. Dr walked in, took one look at me, Paused and asked ''Samoan? i said' Yup. Then he proceeded to enter the room and told me.. You know, i keep telling these non knowing Dr to stop sending me Samoans particularly islanders in general. Let me guess? You got high blood pressure right? Me' Yup. See there is something about islanders that i have learned in my field of profession for over 30 years. High blood pressure is normal for you guys. You islanders are just built differently. You guys are like tanks lol. I treated many islanders for many years with high blood pressure and they lived a very long life. Then he said'' Ok Let me listen to your heart. Uh huh mmm breathe in .......breathe out. breathe in.......breathe out. Ok!! You're a pretty big boy. i replied 6'8 600 lbs Dr said Wow, and you carry that well have a good day you are perfectly fine. lol

    very interesting. I never knew there was such a thing as salt sensitivity or resistance. I've never been much of a salt user, and don't eat out much so don't get a lot of over salted foods in restaurants. But when I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, I switched to low sodium salt. I also started cutting my use of salt in half in recipes. I really don't notice much difference in my BP (controlled with ramipril) but I do follow that lower range you mentioned, and the 130s and 140s.

      If you are salt sensitive it can. Only way to find out is to keep track of your blood pressure off salt diet and when you eat salty.

    Hope you claim to be a scientist as well as a physician. I consider them as distinct hats that may be worn by the same individual. A scientist seeks the unknown to bring it into the realm of knowledge. Physicians acquire and apply knowledge. Many physicians merely follow guidelines which a robot may be programmed to do.
