Its the people who live there to have some pride in the area they live in, im part of a volunteer litter picking group, i live bottom of Aikman ave, i just picked 4 full bags today. Its time people stopped waiting for someone else to make the changes.

    Congratulations on a fascinating video.
I was a barman at the Newfoundpool WMC from 1989 to 1993, although I lived in Highfields. (Two buses each way on split shifts!)
I have read about the demise of the area, but I was shocked, as you filmed along Beatrice Road and its side streets, to see furniture dumped outside the houses from which it was presumably removed. This was inconceivable when I worked in the area!
In 2004 - 2005 I used to visit a friend with a bungalow on Comet Close. We could see the dogs on the flat roof of the Rocket, coming to the edge to look down at any passers-by.
I was stunned to read of the incident with the baby in the Mercury.

Finally!!!! The Saff not being called the worst or most violent/cime ridden place in the city! As soon as saw the title, the wife said it will be New Parks. When I moved to the city in 2010, I was told that should not move to the Saffron Estate or Thurnby Lodge, yet lived in both & had no hassle in either area! Have to admit I almost did believe what was being said about the Saff when in the first 6 months after moving to the estate, there was a murder essentially opposite the house & a few months later another stabbing on the same road! Neighbours blamed me for them & bringing back luck with me!
Everywhere that I have been told are bad places in the city, have turned out to be completely over-reacted about. My wife worked in Highfields for over 25 years & never had a problem being a white female. Everyone was friendly towards her & those that tried causing issues around the workplace, soon stopped when confronted. Same with the Saffron Estate. We have been here 4 years now & everyone has been friendly & not had any issues even though I am in a wheelchair now. even the local youths have been respectful & if seen wife struggling in front garden with something, they have come over & helped her out refusing to take the fiver she has tried to give them for doing so.
The main problems today is nobody really makes the effort to know their neighbours like previous generations. Regardless of skin colour, religion, social status, etc, we have always made the effort to speak to the neighbours & get to know them. When we moved into this property, the first thing we done was put a letter through each of the neighbours doors letting them know we were moving in & if they could leave us room outside the property for the van we used to move. When we moved in, they all popped round to ask if needed a hand unloading. Can honestly say that now we are settled, we cannot see ourselves moving unless something unexpected happens.
Wife has friends in New Parks & St Matthew’s as well, and they tell her that they don’t have any problems in the areas. Every estate in the country that you visit, has litter problems. More bins are needed tbh- both domestic and public, but the City Council are more concerned about vanity projects that don’t get used such as the cycle lanes (which are always empty yet they want to widen them!) and bus lanes. The local councillors are more concerned about what happens in other countries than the city ward they are supposed to be representing. Our local MP now got the seat because he made his campaign about Palestine rather than the actual local issues. Since the elections, nobody has seen hide nor hair of them (just like Vaz & his predecessor from Leicester East when we lived on the Lodge) unless they could get in the Mercury for opening a sweet shop on the Golden Mile! Most of your video, I cannot disagree with & the questions placed are all extremely valid. Tourist ares like Bournemouth will always try to make themselves look better for the tourism money, but Leicester has never really been a tourist city - even after the football club success back in 2016.
I agree with you on the street litter pickers, but the City Council are struggling with funding (because of their vanity projects like the aforementioned & the new market place), so they would have to put Council Tax up by the maximum amount every year to cover it because they outsource the refuse collections etc to Biffa.
Thinking about it as I continue to write a new bestseller paperback here (😂), you are right about the litter etc. Even local residents could spend an hour a week picking up any litter that they may come across on their street. A litter picker grip costs a couple of quid & a roll of bin bags, another £1. For less than £5 they could get those & have some respect for their local area they live in and clean it up. My wife has asked the local youths that congregate on a raised wall flower bed (that the council ignore) to clear up after themselves, and to give them their dues, they done so without any back chat etc, but that is a huge minority in todays environment. If once a week, the council van that does the large/bulky items collections could go round and collect the bags of rubbish picked up by the residents, it would make a huge difference & if the residents got together when doing this, the community would be strengthened & actually make everyone’s lives better in the local area (along with making new friends!). I wish my health was up to being able to do it myself as I would do it without a second thought. Used to do it on the public park in Peterborough that I used to fish at a few years back as hated the sight of rubbish, and it took next to no time at all. Worst bit is that most of the rubbish dumped is that they are generally within a few seconds walk to a bin! Some may blow out of the bin if it fills up, but still not an excuse.
I would just hate to see the state of their houses if they just throw litter in the street (but then again seems to be less caring about the state of their own homes compared to previous generations).
Everything said in the video is fair tbh & completely honest. Thank you for taking the time to return to the City 🙏🏼

look at the money they are trying to waste on London Rd Station too, child services cut, they gave themselves a payrise last year, will it be repeated, increasing their own pension pots at ratepayers expense, blessings to all from a NPE adoptee.

Why should the council have to pick up everyones rubbish.. Kids are shown no sense of responsibility by " Parents" it is their job to educate their kids not the council.. Sorry mate I just don't understand your way of thinking! You should be appalled at the adults that throw their rubbish down in front of their kids .

It's 6 of 1 and half a dozen of the other. Councils and their communities should be working together but it's just not happening these days. Most communities have lost their community centres and/or the places where local people could meet with local councillors to discuss issues. The local shopkeepers who used to have the ear of the councillors have all been replaced by a Tesco Metro or suchlike whose only goal is to make money with no real care for their customers. Most people no longer feel part of a community, there's no leaders and the streets, parks etc just end up getting neglected. Places that should be leading the way, like the local school, obviously couldn't care less either. Back in my day the teachers would find any excuse to have us picking up 10 pieces of litter as a punishment.

Firstly the councils are paid to look after the areas, our council tax and all the other taxes we have to pay are for exactly this. Secondly, yes parents should take responsibility but most of these parents are uneducated/on the poverty line/poor health(mentally and physically)/ have zero self confidence or self worth due to their situation, and have been living in these conditions for a long time, there will be no pride in the area they live or in themselves, its been that way for at least 35/40 years, as far as i can remember. Thirdly, the government have made it their responsibility to educate our children, they continuously absolve bad parenting and put it on the education system, instead of offering better support for these kind of areas and families. The government wastes money had over fist, the first step should be holding them accountable and getting the areas clean and respectable so people can start to have pride in what they have. Then long term projects to educate and give pride to the parents so they can teach/educate their own children better.

Dublin,Ireland. Parents do not pass on values like they once did. I see adults and Kids coming out from shops after buying food opening the food outside the shop and throw the food rappers on the ground and walk away, bins are provided outside all shops. Most of our shops are run by foreign nationals who don't care what happens outside the shop. Our homegrown shop keepers use to scrub outside the shop space they are all gone.✌️☘️

I grew up around there too and there's one huge detail that's missed out, lots of people who now live there are newcomers and are not from developed countries.
The councillors at the end are telling, a young liberal, an old liberal and a diversity selection.
Just like the councillors make decisions for us there's people above them telling them what and where they can take action and spend, those councillors are base level in the grand scheme but they are all that most people can see or understand.
The bottom line is that the majority of the electorate have voted for this and you get the government you ask for, at a national level and locally.

It's not financial poverty the main issue, it's poverty of aspiration. No one forces parents to buy expensive junk food, conduct chaotic and/or transient relationships, or not value education, or keep a dirty home and chuck rubbish. If it were just about money, how do you explain Asian and African kids who flourish, even when their parents are poor and don't speak English and who achieve academic results above those of even privately educated English kids?

The garbage found in these streets resembles the driveway of Buckingham Palace in comparison to the dump-filled neighbourhood I've observed in the Midlands. Most of this seems on garbage day, the bin men allow debris to fly throughout the area while emptying bins, cans, and other waste that falls from the truck, but it is pretty bad though and the council is slack in tidying up the area, really quite shameful

I’ve lived on the “Saff” all my life & know New Parks estate quite well, old school pals used to live there. If they’re looking worse than they did in the 1950’s & ‘60s then it’s down to the economic crash of 2008-9 & the governments since 2010 who decided to make ordinary working folks foot the bill started by the banking crash in America. Whilst the bankers still wanted to pocket their million pound bonuses, the government cut funding to the city councils, including Leicester. I know what I’m talking about, I worked for the council for a total of over 30 years, but was made redundant along with quite a few colleagues 1 year after Cameron came to power. If rubbish isn’t cleaned up, grass verges uncut, repairs not made then it’s down to that, not as some are trying to blame immigrants say. Most of the local corner shops original occupants were put out of business by the growth of supermarkets from America after the 2nd World war, but were saved by mainly Asian immigrants from Uganda & the Indian sub-continent who had a work ethic of opening their shops up at the crack of dawn & open till late which many of the original owners weren’t prepared to do. Blaming of immigrants is a scapegoat & a distraction, the enemy don’t come across in rubber boats risking death by drowning but in executive jets, limousines & mult-million pound yachts!

Familiar stuff. I lived in nearby Braunstone in a Blaby council house, so perhaps a bit quieter than on North Braunstone but it had its moments. My Grandparents lived for many decades on the Eyres Monsell which is similar to New Parks and built around the same time. Had happy memories there through, it seemed a friendlier place at the time.
We moved to Braunstone when I was 9 and I lived there for nearly 20 years. In my teens my Mum had a long terrm illness and my Dad had been made redundant. So in 80's Britain I well remember us living on weekly Giro's posted to us. When they were late things were very lean and we went without until the next one arrived. Oh, and of course we had the gas/electric meters. Having to go up to the local shop for 50p's.
I don't remember there beng as much litter though and people spent more time outside than they do now I guess.
Last year I went for a wander around my old area, which I hadn't done in 20 years. It was more runned down than I remember.
Have been living in France for 27 years now, so a lot different. But thanks for puitting up a video telling how it actually is. We need more of this sort of thing on here. A bit of reality to make people sit up and notice.

The dog shit is unreal! If you want to make a video to shock people then you're in the wrong area.😂 I've put up CCTV just to deter scumbags from leaving their shit outside mine. Lived on Ashleigh Road for twenty years. The transformation has been shocking. Finally escaped from my flat September last year. Last thing I had to do was clean human feaces from the stairwell. The past five years have been the worse. Druggies/dealers, prostitutes, rough sleepers, people pissing and shitting in the stairwells. And the neighbouring streets are grim as well. To think Braunstone Gate was once an in-place to hang out but then that was twenty years ago.

I live here and my children were brought up here on Pickwell Close which is a bit of an oasis. Every thing you say is correct. I can't remember the last time I saw a road sweeper and without them rubbish doe's build up, much of which is spillage from bin collections and damaged recycle bags as well as what comes out of car windows. Litter attracts more litter and how many litter bins did you encounter? I'm 70 and grew up on Tailby Ave west Humberstone but I played and grew up with my mates in the Northfield est (white Harlem) Violent! if you had two ears you were considered to be a pussy. Back then dog shit on the pavement was rife with all the stray dogs. Like all politicians at every level and in every party they are only in it for them selves. Councillors should be living in the area they serve. It was a good video and hard hitting, have you had any flack from the new parks tourist board!!! Please let me know what the three area's of new parks are in your opinion. I know my bit is one being the new parks club side and all west of the New Parks Way, but I do wonder about the other two. Thanks for your effort and hard work making the video.

Good Video and appreciated that you took the time to highlight it. I moved from Netherhall/Humberstone to Northfields and Highfield's and then on to Beaumont leys and then finally ended up in Braunstone Town. I am of the opinion that society on a whole has significantly gone down hill since the late 70's/early 80's. Lack of resources from the council/government or diverted resources, including the lack of police presence and a bit of woke culture, has unfortunately lead to exactly how your video shows the New Parks Estate. Great Video and please keep doing them.

Many parts of Leicester now look like this, no one takes any pride in where they live, i pick up litter outside of my house daily casually discarded by schoolchildren who are not taught to take their litter home or place it in a bin, the city council no longer cleans most of the streets, only the main routes get litter picked, they never sweep the gutters or clear the drains, there is filth and litter all around the city, graffiti is rife, it feels like an absolute cess pit now and you are right to call it out for what it is, councillors and city council don't care about these issues, Mayor Peter Soulsby only cares about the city centre which is also a shit hole, i no longer recognise my home city and would love to leave it for somewhere where the local council and residents still take pride in their local neighbourhoods.

I do wish more people like yourself stood up and tried to be councillors or MPs. It makes me feel very sick to think about the divide in people that are supposed to helping us and the people they are supposed to be helping, the lack of compassion or just human decency is shocking within our leaders.

And a strong smell of piss in the stairwells. Drunks and drug needles everwhere. I remember no modernization of bathrooms. Where u was staying the toilet was original from around 1950 ish. High level twist pipe leaking toilet and the drains smelt so bad. Very depressing place to live. My car got its front window smashed as had to park on the front on aikman avenue. The copper came straight to the flat and asked me to come to the station as he knew who had done this. Basically the mother wanted to pay for repairs to keep her son out of jail. You can work out the rest. Did i make it official or take the money????? 🤔🤔🤔

People everyday people have lost their zap. Their ethic, their value. It ceases to exist today. It disappeared if I’m going by my own research around about the late 90’s. Social deterioration. People have sold out. And others have come across to milk the economy. Then many from all across the different social classes have exploited every corporate, every political, legislative loopholes. It’s called no one wants to take accountability for their own actions, their own decisions, their own mistakes. For either self warped principles, values morales agendas or lack of. In way of being conscious. You have two to four generations of desensitization. Now everyone pointing their fingers. Their idle fingers. The UK sold out. Every callosity. Every individual. Then the cherry on top Illegal immigration. Or asylum seekers invading for refuge. That energy of people that vast condense energy infiltrating the veins of a failing state. That energy is perpetuated by fear and cowardice, weakness, ignorance, hate, pain. These folk are running from fighting for their country. They’re running from taking accountability. They are running against the fight. They aren’t immigrating at their own accord, so they will not have the adaptability to simulate. So pockets of little communities, amongst other communities. A mergence of negative highly weak toxic environments of energy. Now you have the beginning of the end.

I walked through Netherhall council estate, east of Leicester, recently and it was just as filthy as this. I am a regular litter picker but there was no way I was going to pick up there where obviously hardly anyone who lives there cares if they live in filth. If they can’t look after where they live then they have to live amongst it, as the council are broke. I think it’s generational, I wonder if their houses and gardens are just as filthy.

Ah. I am not sure it is the best idea to publicise where the place is that people get taken after rape for police interview :( Very interesting video. When I worked up there the houses on Birds nest avenue were apparently going to be knocked down as they were deemed not fit for use but as far as I know they are still there. All the litter around the school that would never have happened when the old New Parks school was there, the caretaker would have sorted it. I often wonder about the young people I used to work with and what has become of them. There was a 'fagins den' on Aikman, 'alegedly' where people could get stuff robbed to order for Christmas. There's a lot of rubbish everywhere but I have noticed not a lot of bins if any, but last time I was up in new parks, and this was daytime, some lads were burning a wheelie bin, maybe that is why there are no bins because they would just get burned.

I do agree that councils have a commitment to improving the area. However the decline is not just down to them sorry! People who live there have a responsibility too. To look after there neighbouthood. To control there children and teach them right from wrong. I think the council are wrong for so many things though. Just putting all problem families together in one estate is going to have a long term and devastating effect to an area. Unfortunately this is generational decline handed down from family to family. It can be very hard to change the mindset of these people. So it continues.......its sad but whats the solution? I loved the walk around new parks vid. Please do another one of sone other rundown council estates. Maybe this will catch the attentions of the powers that be?? Who knows. Would be great to see new parks regenerated into something great ❤❤
