I was glad to hear Ryan's comments about the spurs. The horse is still so young and green.
The owner of that horse is so lovely, patient and humble! He clearly loves his career with horses and respects his animals.
Super points to improve the overall goals. Just doing the ‘exercise’ isn’t enough, knowing what the goal is super important. Learning more each time I watch Ryan working with a team. Remembering this is a 2 yr old would seem important, he needs to develop the muscles and balance with a rider, continuing the ground work even though you are riding can help creat some good muscle memory for the horse. Great comment on the spurs! What a nice horse.

@@RedHybiscus He is a practical, funny dude!! I know cause he is my brother. He also takes excellent care of his horses in every way. He is always trying to learn more about training his horses and his dogs. I've ridden his horses many times and always a good ride. They are easy to work with because he teaches good manners/skills to his horses.
@@janejohnson660 I appreciate your vouching for your brother. However, it does not change my perspective regarding riding a 2 year old horse even if it was light duty or training. A 2 year old horse is not physically or mentally ready for work. Perhaps ground work/training and such is appropriate in short intervals but outside of that - no - absolutely not. Also, considering the workload- a horse should not exceed a 20% workload or in other words not carry beyond 20% of body weight. Could you imagine carrying 20% of your weight for an hour without a break? Which brings me to my final point and that the horses think, feel, need, want, care, form relationships and bonds, as well as remembers. If the horse is refusing- there is a reason. How about taking the time to get to know your horse and find out why it’s refusing to cooperate instead of simply forcing your will upon it. Those are my thoughts as I watched this video and my opinions are not based on just picking or being mean but are based on research and care not only for that animal but all animals.
@@janejohnson660 this is the second time I am replying to you. The first response must have been deleted. If you don’t understand that a 2 year old horse is too young for riding - not a whole lot to be said. My recommendation is to do some research on horses. Most specifically on growth and development. Not just physical growth but mental growth as well. Take the time to study the mechanics of horses and how they move and what happens when heavy objects are on their back when bones and ligaments are still growing/solidifying. Finally study this think called “workload” especially in relationship to horses. I think these things will help you understand why I bothers me to see an overworked immature horse that is being exploited and expected to be something he is not mentally or physically ready to handle.
Love your approach and your way of teaching, Ryan. Calm, reflected, always taking horse and rider from where they are at and seeking what helps them best. Greetings from Austria!

2. The peer reviewed research disagrees with you. Horses started in their sport at 2 have better bone density, longer careers and fewer injuries than horses started later.
@@horsepowerequineazthose studies were literally paid for and sponsored by the racing industry which breaks horses. Yes horses should be exercising but not riding at that age.

Nice young horse and the owner recognized what issues were getting in the way. Owner is very keen about getting this horse started the right way and not afraid to ask for help. His experience along with Ryans methods should really work out!

I always appreciate when someone is really looking for guidance and willing to be open to some new ideas - it’s very brave in this day & age. All you folks concentrating on the negative or virtue signaling your “superiority” are the reason folks aren’t willing to put themselves out there like this…..and subsequently so many others then lose an excellent opportunity to learn. He’s trying to do right, that’s worth something and I appreciate it very much. Thanks Ryan and the owner for allowing us to share in this learning experience.

Someone has to ride the young ones. Less people want to put the time into making a horse leaving expensive, broken or miss handled horses. I stayed with the older horse for years until I changed to young and yes they have their challenges but I'm the only one who trained them and I wouldn't change it.
Sometimes the training is done in stages. Something like:
0 to 1 yr old - totally basic handling, leading, picking up their feet and left alone with a herd
1 yr old - brought in for a while to practice the above and possibly some lunging then back out to learn from other horses
2 yr old - brought back in to refresh the above skills and for first rides. Then back out with other horses until they are three or four years old and their bones are more developed.
IMHO 2 years is not too young for an introduction to riding, if the rides are very short and you are not introducing complicated maneuvers that could be more stressful on the bones.

If he is a quarter horse, you can stay training them by 2 or 3 Years old. Normal horses you train by 4 or 5. He is probably a quarter horse and looks around 3 years old. So it's totally okay to train quarter horses that young because they develop faster

You can't determine the skeletal maturity of a horse based on chronological age The only way to determine an individual horse's state of bone maturity is by radiography of certain growth plates. Do you even know how many growth plates a horse has? Did you know what the most important growth plates in a horse are and how long it takes for them to completely close - the same in every horse? Pelvis (3 - 4 yrs), Scapula (3.5 to 4 yrs) and Vertebrae (3.5 yrs). You also need to consider hereditary conformational issues. Google AQHA Bloodlines to avoid". Look at this colt's upright and long toes on front hooves at end of this video. Those could mean short lived soundness or already be an issue.
@susannewerner8462 science says that if you wait till they are full grown it would be like waiting till a human is 20 before participating in strength training or sports. Yet could you imagine doing that.

if I understand it right the horse is 2 years old? He is looking very nice but much too young for being ridden, small, less muscles, big saddle right on his shoulder, looks not really fitting for this small horse. I know this is "usual" in USA and as special for Quarters. But veterinary science says something different. And the owner is blaming the horse, not his own methods. Good that he seeks help, but this horse is not a 4wheeler which can be "used" like a machine and not looking what are the needs from the horse. He is too big and heavy for this horse (20 % of the horses weight).

My goodness let's see, you got him as a yearling, have had him a year so he's not even three yet. You need to wait till he's three to ride him like you seem to want to "cowboy". Let the little guy develop another year. You can work on ground maners and what not and most important bonding and letting him know your his leader. Let the little guy grow up and get his bones developed😐
In the western world they do things differently... The 2yo Futurity stuff is a big deal... Done right, the horses are fine. Just because it's different than you're used to, doesn't mean it's bad or wrong.

@@jess3310 read the comments. A lot of people agree that a 2 yr old horse shouldn't be ridden. Especially like an ATV. Look at the size of that saddle on him...much to big. The owner gets on an the colt looks like a pony. No wonder he gets bucked off, the horse isn't mean just uncomfortable about all the weight on his underdeveloped top line.

@@jess3310 Grew up on a ranch in Texas. We'd bring 2-year-olds in to refresh basic handling and for their first rides, but never rode them more than 20 minutes at a time and after 30 to 45 days they went back out to pasture with the herd to let their bones and minds develop.

I’m sooooo happy to find this video!!!! My horse is having all of these little issues, going in and out of hollowness, braciness, I’m not staying and waiting long enough before giving my releases. Thank you for this video, and I love what was said about the tie downs and spurs not being necessary on this type of bound up horse who really does want to be forward and relaxed, but just can’t find it easily himself- those would make for more tension. Wearing pressure a bit more, learning he can relax into forward and soft while wearing it, that is what we are waiting for. 🎉❤

Too young
How can you say too young? At 2 years old he's old enough unless his blood proves different. I've seen ir of horses broke at 19 months with no issues other than bloodline.. Skipper blood is the worst I've seen and it wasn't because of age. 19 months or 4 year's old didn't matter.
@@thomasoneal3083 Just because they got lucky and had no issues doesn't mean it was right. Two is too young to be carrying an adult the size of those two guys.
@@thomasoneal3083 19 months? That is absolutely disgusting. The cannon bones arent even fully developed then. Not to mention the rest of the legs or spine. Horses finish bone development at age 6.
@@thomasoneal3083 IMHO, 2 is ok for basic saddle training, but not long rides or difficult maneuvers. It might look like they're doing okay at 2yrs, but the damage can show up as they age. Joint problems, arthritis, etc. show up earlier with horses pushed into hard work too young.
It is like expecting a 12 year old boy to lift the weights that adults would do during weight training. It would be abuse. With that large saddle on I don't see how the horse can bend in the ribs.

The day you stop learning about horses is the day you should quit horses. Sooo sooo many of the "old" guys think they know everything and aren't willing to try any of the "new" training techniques. It's really nice to see this guy learning and not getting offended when Ryan points out anything he's doing "wrong" or "not good enough."

That’s what I heard. Way too young to be ridden yet. And this man’s too big for him right now. A horse will grow, but I think he’s rushing it a little bit in my opinion.

This horse is trying to communicate the whole time that this guy has no feel for his mental state. Stop chasing him thru the change of direction 🙄. Ryan was immediately onto the fact this guy has NO SOFTNESS in his own feel. He is robotic. He says he wants SOFTNESS from his horse when HE has no softness. Ryan you are so kind❤ Can't fix forward or the buck when the brace is never really addressed thru feel.

@@lisakovic5256 I saw two much too heavy men on a very young small horse with a big saddle right on the shoulder on this 2 years old horse. This is not the best for the horse.

Just the colt is too young
Some finer points needing a little help and this colt will be a super cow horse. Owner almost got it, just needed to know how to "see" the issues before schooling them out. Lovely horse!
Turn colt out and let him grow. All the weight of saddle and guy really stresses his back and joints.
Look - I don’t know if people notice the size of the colt - and again it’s a colt - colt - colt anyone notice this is an exceptionally young horse? And that guy is to big for the colt? Na. The colt is bad - can’t be the this guy is asking a young small colt to work beyond his physical abilities- work load should be no more than 20% of the horses weight - clearly that man and that saddle exceeds that limit. Limit. Limit. I swear what is it about these guys that think these horses are a 4 wheeler and can do what ever when ever without limits.

Most horsemen I know like this guy will call 5 year old horses "colts". Since he bought him as a yearling, it means this horse is at least two, which is about when most people I know would start working a horse under saddle.
The owner also wants to use the horse as a cow horse, and he's certainly built like a cow horse, imo. Cow horses are generally not super tall, but very strong. I would agree more that size and development could play a part if the owner hadn't talked about having problems even from the beginning, when he was teaching the horse to drive from the ground. That says to me that the behavior is something else, not necessarily because the owner was riding.

I hope the owner reads these comments regarding the Colt being to young and let him grow at least a year before backing him again . The horse is to young and he is to big for this horse right now .

I thought this was an excellent lesson! Very nice.. shows how important your 3 circle game is…I always learn a lot about horse psychology..
I noticed that the owner when he was lunging his horse, he was almost directly behind him and I’m sure he knows what he’s doing, but I wanted to point it out because when I was learning how to lunge a horse. I did that and was kicked right in the chest and had a lucky horse shoe print lol not the best experience of my life but surprisingly I didn’t break or fracture anything just minor bruising
I noticed that too! He was within kick range!
Try digging your heel in the ground when you are lunging that colt. When you are lunging; that circle keeps changing when we move around. Great work

Even the great horse trainers used visual/audio aids to help the horse learn to communicate. We have to teach them a language that both species can understand. Just like communicating with a baby. They have to learn words.
Great horsemen. I am a professional horsewoman also. I would not ride with those spurs just in case an error is made. I don't worry about some light work at this point I also look at equitation and riding. When this gentleman is disengaging he's not taking that outside leg off. The horse will fee stuck. He can improve the position of his free leg and allow the horse to feel he can come through the doors and release the pressure. He himself mentions that his horse feels trapped. The spurs are trapping him. Good video and two great folks!

Folks whining about it being a two year old dont realize theres a big difference between ring a colt for an hour at a time for a month or two before winter and putting a two year old to work.

Cudos to the owner for being open to learn more.i know nothing about cowhorses and observing while listening i see things i didnt even look for before.is it usual to start working under saddle at 2? Or is he just putting in the basics and then let him off to grow on another season?

This horse pops his head up as he gets uncomfortable. Saddle issue, chiropractic issue, bad or unpleasant memory? I also think he is a bit young since his bones and muscles are growing. Head up, heavy on the front can unseat/unbalance a rider and get them going forward against the horse. If a hop or buck is on the menu you are out of balance and when the colt feels this he shies away from the awkward weight shift. Might be eating dirt if you cant recover. Then it gets programmed in. It starts out small, just like this.
Glad to see owner seeking instruction. BUT PEOPLE STOP starting horses at 2yrs old. Horses easily live into their 30s. TOO young at 2, break them down with permanent damage at a young age. Western saddles typically weigh 40-60 lbs. So many trainers/owners over 200lb. 240lb or more on a 2 yr horse. TB race horses criticized for racing at 2yrs but carrying 123lbs or less!
Also the saddle on this horse doesn't fit at front. Pops up high in back because front too narrow or too wide and see the problem at the trot. Horse gets pinched, alot of pressure in small area around withers, shoulder. Bad fit causes so many "bad behavior" problems. Most people don't know how to fit saddle or worse know it doesn't fit and use it anyway😢
I see that the constant circles and yields is what he is being made to do. What he says is he want to be forward. Ride forward. Change your ratio. right now I see 98% turns and 2% forward. Flip flop your ratio to 85% forward 15% bending. Lower them reins and lift your eyes.
Why the spurs?
Spurs are aids just like crops, seat position and bits.
Unsubbed because it isn't okay for a brute owner to start riding on a two year old. Ryan, you need a lesson more than that baby horse does.
Can someone break down for me what I need to look for specifically when Ryan say’s “his shoulder is on the outside circle and his hip is on the inside circle”?
Shoulder is a little away and hip is a little in. You can see the front feet are traveling a larger circle than the back feet.
I really appreciate that rider. He is really doing right by that horse. Is it possible the saddle doesn't fit well? It certainly bounces a lot on the horse's back when he is traveling. Maybe it's too tight in the withers...?
If he were 'really doing right by that horse' he would not be expecting to ride a 2yo in the way one might reasonably expect to ride a 4yo.
In my books, at 2yo you do a little work with them - leading them about to see the world, reinforcing ground manners, maybe a little ground driving, perhaps trailering to a local show to gain experience in an easy way. Engage their brain while it's malleable, but leave off any physical pressure or stresses as far as possible; nature has not yet finished its physical construction job.
I wonder is he not riding him too young? Is the colt strong enough for all that bending and turning ridden at that age?

Why, ryan, are you choosing to work with a man, albeit a very nice man, who is trying to ride a baby!!???? This horse is way too young to be doing what his owner is expecting him to do!! I have followed you for a few years, love how you work, but this just blows my mind! My respect for you has just plummeted! Any horse person worth anything knows you just dont ride 2yr olds!! This poor horse is going to develop all sorts of joint and spinal issues because of being started too soon! Hes trying so hard to tell you he cant do what your asking, that hes too young, and what you're forcing him to do hurts! Ive seen this too many times, and it breaks my heart every time. Yes, do groundwork with your young horse, play with him, teach him, but do NOT get on his back!!!

@@eponaonline I wish the horse had more advocacy- I think people see horses as a tool and not as God’s creature that has not only limits, but thinks, feels, has needs, wants, forms relationships, forms bonds, and remembers. It literally makes me sick when I look at training videos that are abusive to the horse and the creator of the video thinks this is top of the line content when the reality is it’s abusive. It scares me to think then what happens on a day to day basis. I sincerely hope and pray the creator of this video is able to hear the feedback. However, the sister of the creator reached out to me in support of her brother and I encouraged her to educate herself and to become a student of the horse but she or her brother deleted that discussion- so unfortunate
@RedHybiscus agreed! It's about time we sit back and take a fresh look at horses, their minds, behavior, needs and care. They are such incredibly sensitive animals, and so loving and willing! Yet all we seem to be able to do is use and abuse them for our own wants, needs, and entertainment.
The owner is too large for that horse. The horse is somewhat petite. Guy should have bought a larger horse to ride. Kind of reminds me of seeing Christopher Reeve on a horse. Needs bigger hirse.
Why use the flag. The great horse trainers get a horse to do what they want by trust as and communication. That flag and I wouldn't get along.

I think that 'public' trainers often use the flag as a way of _demonstrating_ communication to viewers - either IRL or on-screen - who, however 'horsey' they may consider themselves, either cannot or will not see or understand true communication when it occurs.
