When I was very unhappy in the 80s, strangely, the smiths got me out of it. I found the lyrics relative to me ,they dragged me back from a very dark place
no kidding, talk about the stepford family. They weren't moved but seemed actually upset by the line " how can they look into my eyes and still they don't believe me". Morrissey was referring to these types of people with that line.
The Smith’s consisted of the best guitarist to ever grace England’s shores in Johnny Marr and England greatest ever lyricist in Stephen Patrick Morrissey. They were classed as a “ student band “ as all students tended to be into them.I still say after seeing all the punk bands Pistols clash etc aswell as The Jam Stone Roses etc id definitely say the Smiths were the best band ever to release a record in the UK.Most bands in England were influenced by them in some way shape or form
My favorite Smiths song! The brilliance of Morrissey’s lyrics: song is supposedly about the music press criticizing The Smiths-particularly Morrissey’s statements and ethos, but it’s vague enough to be interpreted in a totally individual way.
1. Interesting that you cite an Irish influence - they were mostly Mancunian first generation Irish-immigrants. This is a bit of an odd choice - where the songs are usually lyric-driven and with the guitars carrying the main theme, this one has hardly any lyrics, and is very much a vehicle for the voice; 2. An idea - '80s groups that you might have missed, with a Celtic connection - Cocteau Twins? Something like Pale Clouded White or Kissed-Out Red Floatboat?
One of my favourite bands and songs. The Smiths were massive on the UK indie scene in the 80's and a very influential band. I can't recall a poor song by them. I encourage you to give them more listens to get familiar with Morrisey's voice. His lyrics can be rather meloncholy but also often very witty and darkly humourous. The guitarist, Johnny Marr has collaborated with numerous artists since leaving the Smiths, including The The, Modest Mouse and too many others to mention! Sadly, base player Andy Rourke recently passed away. Further Smiths suggestions - 'This charming man', 'Heaven knows I'm miserable now', 'Panic', 'Girlfriend in a coma'.
the song was written by Morriseey as a response to the british music writers and critics who questioned his songwriting and the overall idea of the Smiths....the song is pretty autobiographical because Morrissey is the boy with the thorn in his side..
Correction... We are all the Boy with the thorn in our sides, specifically you the listener. Read the lyrics closely. From "The BOY..." (another person) to "How can they look into MY eyes..." (The narrator) to "How can they see the love in OUR eyes..." (all of us) and finally to "And when YOU want to live..." (You the listener). Essentially he's saying "we all have this desire... don't you?" and it's a masterclass in contextual transposition.
The Smiths 1982-1987 Morrissey 1988-present Recommendations: Panic There is s light that never goes out Heaven knows I’m miserable now First of the gang to die
I like honest reactions. Morrissey has one of those voices that divides opinions. His solo stuff is great. The Smiths often use jolly tunes to convey not so happy lyrics; check out Girlfriend in a Coma as an example of this that's worth reacting to. They have an extensive back catalogue so plenty more to choose from. In a similar vein but more gothic are The Cure; Pictures of You is a nice place to start, if you decide to react to them.
The Cure is another band that kind of evaded my radar, when I was young. I didn't realise being a DJ in a small town would limit my exposure so much. Not that I didn't know of The Cure. You know, I'm going to have to look into a LOT of bands I should have known more about. This is going to be fun.
100% right about divided opinions, so many people here in Manchester adore Morrissey but an equal amount, myself included, hated his whiny voice. His racist views of more recent times cemented my feelings about him, and even Johnny Marr distances himself from him too.
@@hanierfamily yeah, he's an avid supporter of the 'for britain' party, and wore their badge on one of his u.s chat show appearances, they are a far right fascist party. Sadly for him his fellow Smith's members have all had to come out and distance themselves from Morrissey's views. Like I say tho, I'm on the side that doesn't like the guy and loathed his singing voice I found him to sound like someone who had trapped their manhood in a taxi door! Yet others love his voice. Marmite , love him or hate him!
I love Morrissey’s voice, but I get why some may not. It definitely grows on people too. Girlfriend in a Coma, Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now, Some Girls are bigger than others…etc. Moz is such a troll. Nearly every lyric has a pinch of irony, humor, and mockery-and in a relatable way. I love The Smiths so much.
The smiths were massive in the UK back in the day, but can be Rather depressing lyrically in Thier songs, fun fact,. My friend from school is now Morrissey's lead guitarist
How did the Smiths elude you? Come on guys, fellow gen-X-rs. First of all, if you don't know where the term Gen-X comes from then you are forgiven. That's from Billy Idols original UK band. They took Generation-X from a 1964 british book about the mod punk culture. Then he went solo in the USA. Anyways, how can you know stuff like this or the Smiths or Siouxsie and the Banshees when MTV was giving us non-stop Michael Jackson, Madonna, Duran Duran,...etc. Only if you were a devout KROQ listener. Only if you hung around music stores and read Zines(xeroxed newsletters) would you know this alternative underground stuff. Any "original" goth's here? That wasn't most of us, right. That's how it eluded us. This stuff wasn't mainstream in the U.S. I saw a Smiths shirt, once, and I thought what's a smith? Anyways, listen on and "make up for lost time". You will know if you like the Smith within 10 seconds. Their sound is so rich and concentrated with great stuff. If you like them, it's like getting hit by a sudden beautiful dream. Once, you get your bearings. Just hang on and enjoy, it's over so quick. You tube has the greatest music collection.
Is called jangle guitar style.Listen, to How Soon is Now, This Chsarming Man, You've got everything now, I know is over, Girlfriend in a come, Cementery Gates, Shoplifters of the world. Johnny would created the music and Moz would fit the lyrics to the music. By the way they are dark and broody

Manchester, England gave the world some of it's greatest music. The Smiths, Joy Division, Buzzcocks...
Nice to see a mention of the Buzzcocks!! R.I.P. Pete Shelley
New Order hello? 🙂
Oasis , hello

Jamiroquai as well
Aaaw The Smiths are central to many peoples love of music and how they see the world…possibly the biggest cult in British music
When I was very unhappy in the 80s, strangely, the smiths got me out of it. I found the lyrics relative to me ,they dragged me back from a very dark place
The instrumental to this song is superb
Morrissey sings in most clear, english possible.. Americans..
I just keep confirming that British musicians are way more talented than Americans.
If this doesn't move you there is something seriously wrong with your heart and brain. Real musos great writing otherworldly groove. Perfection.

Er the lyrics the emotion. You don't get it .sorry but you don't.
One of the best bands ever. ‘Folky’👀👀👀👀🙈
It’s probably the strings that they’re interpreting as folky.
You wouldn't understand

The Smiths/Morrissey aren’t for everyone. Either you get it or you don’t.
nah bro, this is an easy to listen to smiths song, something's wrong with this Stepford family
Jonny Marr's guitar is always interesting. Morrissey's singing and his personality divide opinions- he is certainly a Marmite artiste!

Girlfriend in a Coma is great. Crisp clean vocals and pretty unusual... thanks for always being so honest in your reactions ❤

React to their song "I Know It's Over" I think you guys will definitely like it!

Hi guys, please could you do The Smiths - Reel Around The Fountain and Beastie Boys - Pass the Mic
Chris was a DJ for 20 plus years so we know the Beastie Boys well but we will react to The Smiths again at some point soon. Stay tuned
Chris says if you can find him a Beastie Boys song he doesn't know, he would love to hear it!
@@hanierfamily I would recommend Beastie Boys - Booming Granny but it's a joke song 😁
