You make the movement look so easy and natural. I've been working on this lesson for months, and I'm just starting to feel like I'm making progress. The relaxed bow shoulder , handbag wrist, and low elbow were already haunting my dreams, now they're infecting my TH-cam feed!
This is very helpful for viola. In Primrose's book I have read about keeping the elbow down, but there are so many violinists teaching with a generally higher elbow on TH-cam it starts imprinting on me. The way you are showing here results in a big, rich tone from the viola, and this really inspires emulation. Thanks!
I’ve been trying to figure out how best to hold the bow and FINALLY this video has helped me see the way I need to hold it to be effective and comfortable! Thanks! 🙌🏻💕
Thank you for this very informative video. As a visual learner I can see up close your shoulder and elbow angle in order to keep the bow hand straight across the strings.
Pinterest has posture alignment strap technology for upright posture. Thank you, for all of the selfless, kind, articulate and unending generous instruction Amber.
Thank you Amber, this is very helpful! My elbow definitely was too high... although it has to come up for the C string quite a bit. Maybe another topic, planes of bowing on the different strings... And also: Could you please talk about what kind of cloth you use on your chinrest (silk, cotton or other) and how exactly you secure it there?
please demonstrate correct shoulder rest placement on the violin ( or viola) . there are multiple factors to be considered and so this will be subjective advice but would help us to determine what is correct for each of us. thanks. I appreciate your advice.
Hello, Amber. Thank you for all your fantastic and very useful videos on viola. There are a lot of channels about violin but only a few ones about viola, so it's very interesting and valuable for me. Could you give us some tips to avoid bow bouncing, on the one hand when crossing strings and on the other (one) when aproaching the tip of the bow? This usually happens to me: 1. when I go from a higher to a lower string. I don't know if maybe I'm doing it rather in an abrupt or jerky way and that's why my bow tends to bounce. 2. sometimes when I aproach the tip of the bow, it starts bouncing too. I don't know if I have to give more weight with my index finger as I'm reaching the tip. Thank you and greetings from Tenerife (Canary Islands - Spain) / Saludos desde Tenerife y muchas gracias.
Great, helpful lesson Amber gurl!!!! Rule of 72: Divide 72 by an interest rate and your answer is how long it take your dollar to double!! ie, 72 divided by 3% = 24. So at a 3% interest rate your dollars will double every 24 years. Moral of story; you're young so start investing $50.00 monthly (mutual funds) and retire comfortably at age 50! Peace my sweet, love your stuff!!
I jsut found you on TH-cam. Thank you SO much for all your useful videos!! I feel cursed with my shaky bow!!! 😫 So I will do my best to eliminate it with your help
When she was explaining the muscles around the shoulders ,it would involve the trapezius ,deltoid, teres major, and teres minor. Leave those out of the movement. Those muscles don't have much to do with the arm movement in using your bow. You're mostly concerned with the flexor and extendor muscles of the forearm.
Hi, Big fan. Bought my violin a couple days ago. Learning a lot, I know it's gonna take some time but your videos are a huge help. You're pretty too, so you know that's kinda distracting lol:p But keep making videos. May God bless you
This is very helpful. I just had my great grandfather’s violin refurbished and I’m trying to teach myself to play. You answered many of my beginner questions. Thanks.
It's nice but the video is too long for me. Lots of extra information like the violin position on the shoulder since at the point where beginners do bowing, they should learn first where the violin rests. Personally I think that's what should be done. I am here for the bow shaking tho and not violin positioning which could be done at about 5-7 minutes. Just saying. 😊

CineMutt yayyy!! So glad! Thank you for watching
Great insight on how it's the *shoulder* that makes the bow arm work. Thanks!
I’m pretty sure your my favorite person on TH-cam, thanks for sharing!
Angel thank you so so much for that lovely comment❤️✨🎻
Love the breathing and elbow tips. Thank you. I too enjoy the viola . However I do not play the violin rather the flute and piano.
