    I have enjoyed growing with off grid non circulating hydroponics for over 8 years. It truly is a set it and forget it method of growing, a welcome addition to your garden. Dr. Kratky was not around when I first started but now has a TH-cam channel. This is the place to go to get first hand knowledge on growing off grid plants such as lettuce, pak choy, herbs, tomatoes, etc.

      Thank you Dr Kratky. I was frustrated with gardening years ago. I am on the road a lot and used to come home to some kind of mess. I was excited to find your easy and inexpensive way of growing. Thank you so much for sharing. I have got so many thank you's from around the world, those people are thanking you too. You are an awesome person. Keep on Growin'.

      I'll have to raise my hand as another who has benefited from this method of gardening. A big thank you to Dr. Kratky for sharing this novel approach for growing food. As well as VanDuzee for acknowledging and directing others to the very source. I'm looking forward to more interactions between channels and formulating new ideas as well as share our progress with others to encourage the public to 'dip their toe' into hydroponics as a complementary way of gardening.

      Thank you fr Kratky and Mike. I only got interested(found out) about hydroponic recently. Being from Haiti, My folks grow a lot of veggies in this backyard. I have been wanted to do the same but I have limestones and boulder in my yard. I have never wanted to be depended on the man to feed me. I had been looking on grow veggies with alternative mediums. Glad I found folks like you. Keep inspiring and stay safe!!!! Ké Bondyé beni’w!

    Mike, thank you for the mention. I was happy to share Dr. Kratky's talk on non-circulating hydroponics, which I had found on a website as a way to say thank you to Dr. Kratky for the time he spent "educating" me on hydroponics. When Dr. Kratky got his own TH-cam channel, I reached out to transfer the video to his channel where it rightfully belongs. I absolutely love growing in water, and the quietness of not using pumps and aerators. Also, thanks for your efforts to entertain and educate others. I have been a long time fan of your channel.

    I'm really grateful for your videos Mike, I'm a total newbie and having these resources really helps the likes of myself get there quicker...I'm basically learning from your experiments i.e. trial and error. I'm aiming to be self sufficient for my family in greens leafy veggies and herbs within 12 months. I'm in Australia so we have a great climate for it and a lot of sunlight. I'm trying my best to use recycled materials where possible but have been to the hardware store for certain things. I'm really finding cable ties helpful for suspending containers. Long term I'm thinking some sort of roll on roll off tray system where you harvest and sow every day (somehow). I'm now researching Kratky vs Hydroponics (i.e. with pump) to see what the pros and cons are but I'm keep to keep it simple and focus on getting the fresh produce rather than use any complex items (i.e. pumps, lights, heatpads). I've just sown all my seeds using your method with a paper towel and some old drinking containers. Anyway, thanks again!!!

    Hi and thank you so much for the great videos. I love that you have showed us how to do this "on the cheap". I've got my little seedlings going strong using the Dollar Tree container and paper towel wicking method. I ordered the nutrients from Amazon and the Master Blend was the biggest expense. My question is: what color is Master Blend supposed to be? In pictures, it appears to be yellow but the 1 lb. baggie (yes, a baggie!) I received is a light blue/green. The seller assures me that they just re-packaged Master Blend to be able to sell smaller portions. I know this isn't exactly on topic, but I don't necessarily trust answers from those trying to earn a buck. Thank you again!!!

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The kit that I got once had a blue tint to it. I will try to confirm with Masterblend. I am trying to order in bulk so I can get everyone a good deal, a lot of resellers on Amazon are charging too much.

    Hey Mike. Awesome vids..quick question. If you start in 5 gal buckets..why are the holes for the plants drilled so far up? It seems there would be less nutrients needed if drilled closer to middle?

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      More water keeps it stable longer. The extra mass helps regulate the temperature. Think about a swimming pool compared to coke can sitting in the sun. It holds about 3 gallons at 25 cent/gallon. Even if you waste half of that, it's not that much.

    Hey Mike, enjoy your videos. I'm over on the left coast and have been doing Kratky greens on the back screened porch in 10 gallon tubs for three years. Some great crops but the one thing I've noticed is that the real leafy lettuce varieties seem softer than if I grow outside. Chard,spinach and bok choy don't seem to have this problem. Any thoughts. Will have to get together some time and tell gardening war stories.

    Hi! I decided to do Krackty approach to gardening, basically it started out great! The plants were doing amazing keeping pace with plant in soil! Then they slowed down in growing and leaves started wilting. The tomatoes had bloomed & had a couple of tomatoes. Then they started dying. Roots had been looking great. But when I checked on the roots when everything started dying the roots were covered with algae or moss!
    I went from 9 pots with 3-4 plants per pot down to 3 pots with a couple of plants each!
    What went wrong? How do I keep algae/moss out? Can you help me?

    I am just starting and very new to hydroponics.
    Few questions..doesnt the nutrient solution get cloudy and smell foul in kratky method. Did u face any issues regarding the same and what is the solution.
    Does NPK of 19:19:19 work same as the one u are using? And what proportions should the nutrients solution be made with it?

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the solution can be in there for months and does not smell. It may if you let light in and algae grows. I have only used the Masterblend in the proportions recommended. 🖒🌱

      I just fill the container up to start and let it go.

  • @Metqa
    @Metqa 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm getting frustrated.
    I'm trying to do the same things you do, but I"m getting mostly failure.
    I transfer first leaf seedlings ot tomato and pepper to the gutter box with a pool noodle just like you did just to get them started ,and they either stop growing or die.
    I transferred older seedlings of zucchini ( 2nd leaves) that are started in soil mix by rinsing off the roots and just dipping the bottom rooms in nutrient solution and leaving some the roots above the water line and they shriveled and died. The ones transferred to cheap top soil survived.
    I tried taking an established basil plant bought from the store and converting it to kratky, like you did with the store bought tomato, and over the course of a month, they all shriveled and rotted.
    I tried to start lettuce seeds like microgreens by using a wicking system and sterile seed starting mix and all the seeds rotted.
    The only thing that seems to be working is the microgreen seed starting box with only the paper towel. And I have some snap beans that I put in a net cup with water touching the bottom and those are sprouting and putting roots down into the water, but after watching every other plant fail to thrive beyond that point, I'm afraid it's going to die too.
    I feel like giving up. My house is around 75 degrees indoors so it's not too cold or too hot. It's only been getting 85 degrees outside but all the plants and solutions are in the shade. I'm using the same ratio of nutrient solution that you suggest. Are all of my plants dying of transplant shock? I don't know what to do. I've watched your videos on repeat for the past month and I think I'm doing it like you suggest. Am I suffering from Survivor Bias by watching all of these successful TH-cam growers? Is it actually normal for so many of my plants to just die?

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, just growing pains. You are trying too much just to start. You should try one or two, master that and then add. Tomatoes are very different than lettuce. I have never tried squash, some things don't do well. Basil can be cloned like a tomato plant. In stead of planting the whole thing you can take cuttings and root it. Then they are used to the wet environment.

    So do you grow the broccoli greens to eat in salads or cooked? I have heard of eating broccoli sprouts but not the greens.

    Hi, first of all thanks for your Video !
    Here my question. I want to grow White Sage (Salvia Apiana) in my contry (Canada) but it's too damn cold during winter. So I am wondering if I can grow White Sage inside using the Kratky method. I more often see it for vegetable but rarely for regular plants.
    Also because it's a plant that is use to grow in the hot zone, I am not sure if it's duable.
    Thanks in advance for your answer about my so imporant project I have here to grow indoors these Salvia Apiana.
    Éric

      Hey eric, not sure. Depends on how warm you keep your apartment. Also, I don't think sage likes ot roots constantly wet. Maybe I will give some more a try.

    Hey, I tried your downspout kratky and am having algae problems. It's positioned in the sun for most of the day because that is the only space I have for it. Whats your technique for insulating against high temps and algae?

    • @KeepOnGrowin

      You could wrap it with a 1x4 piece of lumber or foil bubble wrap insulation.

    I want to do this set up at my south side back patio (has the best sun) of the house and we get heavy wind coming thru here often so what can I do to anchor my set up down so my veggies won't fly away from me...lol. Thanks.

      If you are using downspouts, I staple a strap around them.

      @@KeepOnGrowin Ok, thank you. Also, what can you recommend for keeping the water/nutrients cool cause we get up to 3 digits in summer. Thanks.
