In Paris, the center of musical life, Gretry's operas were performed in two opera houses to the extent that, during more than 6 decades, you could hear at least one Gretry's opera every other night! La caravane du Caire was played 500 times, Richard Cœur-de-lion 485 times, Zémire et Azor 271 times (at the Comédie-Italienne). Today, this master of operas, Gretry, is almost forgotten. The only opera that has had more performances in Europe than Gretri's operas is: "La Cecchina" - Niccolo Piccinni (!)
What a great composer Gretry was. His Opera Richard Coeur de Lion is in my humble opinion one of the best works of the 18th century. He had a gift for simple beautiful melodies.
