But not all languages are as friendly to emoticons, and who can be bothered to switch languages on their keyboard. No they need emojis to be the universal language

Yeah, to the end user emoticons are the same as emojis. I remember messenger emoticons. Way before the iPhone. Being a pc user I was used to emoticons until they where in phones as emojis, so, no real leap there.
"That Internet Guy" is the perfect description of Tom Scott.
I'm sure someday someone will officialize the creation of an emoji-only language with strict grammar and vocabulary.
The kind of people who use lots of emoji, and the places they use them (casual conversation, social media) don't care about grammar now, let alone learning a completely new (and arguably pointless) system.

Yes, there'll be an emoji for every word! We've already got an aubergine emoji and a pile of poo emoji we're already a good way there. and even if a word doesn't have an emoji all to itself, we'll work out a way to express it using two emoji together. And so we can write them with ordinary pens we'll invent a way to draw each emoji with a number of strokes. Stupid idea? Well, Chinese has done exactly this for thousands of years.
But how would you translate abstract concepts such as existential angst as emoji?!

This guy is one of my favourite TH-camrs. I found him somehow back when he had 250 000 subs and watched a few videos. Then I watched his entire 'things you might not know' playlist in a single sitting.' Tom Scott is great. Well done mate.
Don't get me wrong, I'm cool with Emoji existing, but I don't really understand why people need to have x emoji. I can sympathize for skin tone and I guess hair color, but what in the world do we need a pancake emoji for? Surely it takes longer to find an emoji than it does to just type out the word. Oh well, I guess it didn't make sense in Japanese either. 🍙

I'm on Android, and for at least a few emoji I can type a word and the keyboard will suggest the emoji version of that word. 🐈 🍚 🍆 🌒 for example.
On Google Keyboard there's emoji search which makes using them way easier.
But then you two are typing out the word, and could just pick the word instead of the emoji.

Emojis show actions, things, concepts. Having more is probably better, but some would say that placing more emphasis on appearance could remove focus from the actions people do.

It really surprised me that they would include skin color, this is really far-fetched for what started as sorting writings. Sticking with neutral should have sufficed.
And looking at the emoji tables, so many seem so... anecdotal, casual, hype-of-the-moment to me, except now they are set in stone.

The demand for more emojis will drive the production of an emoji lexicon the size of other human languages. The combinatorial power of the skin tone modifier can be applied to any combination of unicode symbols, and reminds me of how radicals work in chinese and japanese -- you combine them into a single character that takes on a new meaning; this, I imagine, will possibly be how this new emoji language evolves and is coded. Picture this: if you have an "emoji modifier" unicode symbol that is added to the unicode symbol for any japanese kanji, you suddenly have a placeholder for >75,000 new emoji, and only needed to create one new unicode symbol.
We need more of this.
And America gets stuck with coverage of the presidential candidates until our colons leap from our bodies and strangle us in protest.

I've done standard working in my lifetime. One of the best was defining in a technical dictionary what billion means. I'm squarely in the 10^12 group because that's how we do it in Finland, but when it came to an international technical standard where it was only used as figure of magnitude I was ready to say that 10^9 is good.
