The meltdown at the end of the first half and no real 2nd threat offensively were the bigger stories than the defensive strategy.
When Anthony Edwards is dropping a historically efficient 44 and we practically neutralize MPJ and we hold Murray to 19….and it still feels like we aren’t close to beating them, this team has a LONG way to go
Not really. They played near perfect. It's not that they beat us. Wolves didn't give themselves a chance due to doing the opposite strategy of what they should do. Also a lot of low iq mistakes. We played a D game and they played an A. If anything this looks like trouble for nuggets

@aquamarine56 Murray played how he's played all playoffs .. an inefficient 40% shooter. Don't expect much more from him considering our wing defenders.
Gordon and your less than average bench shooting practically 100% from the field -- that's A+++ -- can't get better than that, and we only lost by 8. That won't happen again.

slowmo is becoming unplayable with his inability to make that 5-10 foot push shot. all 5 starters on Denver can shoot the ball right now with Gordon looking like steph curry out there. there's no good answer to them, except to be physical and do better on offense. If they don't steal game 5, it's over in 6. I just don't believe KAT has the mental fortitude to play under control in big games. I also hate how they try to post up Rudy after timeouts, like......come on, man. there were many possessions where they turned it over trying to get rudy the ball in the paint. it's a terrible thing to watch. The same thing hurt us in this game that hurt us all season, careless turnovers. The easy strategy is to let Jokic go to work in the paint after you make a 3 point shot and let him shoot...you can't just give up wide open looks to Justin Holiday, KCP, Christian Braun, MPC, Murray, to kill your momentum. You rather give up a 2 and keep that extra point you worked so hard to get back.

Agree. The team is just too emotional. When kat and rudy are playing bad, they just become complete idiots who are lost in space. Ant has to average 55+ to win the series. And that's not going to happen.
Give Garza the 8-10 Kyle minutes and I'm serious. a 4th big body to bang Joker and can hit an open 3 or score inside for some points.

They can win without the KAT bursts by playing Naz more.

Most devastated I've been in a while. But, coming at the game from a sober perspective this morning to things we need to clean up:
1. KAT got caught sleeping on the weakside 4-5 times that hurt us big time. Easy to clean up, he hadn't played the roamer much in the matchup to this point.
2. We've given up two 20+ to 4 runs in the series so far, the offense needs to find a way to stabilize when things are going poorly.
3. We gave up a shot diet we can live with outside of Jokic getting a bit too deep and the AG lobs. Compete more on those.
4. The Rudy offensive touches on the short roll or post ups were either great or horrific. We need to have more of a plan for him on offense, he needs to have a plan.
5. We left a ton of points on the board in transition in the first half.
Things that I expect to go better for us in other games this series:
1. Their bench + AG won't shoot 19/26 from the floor and 8/13 from three.
2. KAT and NAW will contribute more.
3. They won't continue to be nails from everywhere.
Bounce back in game 5, series doesn't start until the home team wins.

The Wolves got little from Karl and Rudy, and both need to step up. ANT needs some help. Also, why did Naz play fewer minutes than he generally plays? It wasn't like anybody else in the frontcourt was doing much.

Kat should be moved to cover Gordon. It's a lot to ask of anyone to get 25 and guard Jokic. Rudy defending between the paint and Gordon is clearly not working.

Rudy is almost as clueless as Kat. If he could finish those seal offs on a small at 80-90% then of course...but most of the time he gets fouled first or stripped or makes a dribbling error.
We won’t win if their team keeps shooting 50-60% from 3. We also won’t win if our role players can’t score

Attack Attack Attack Joker. He's slow and offers no rim protection. Dont shoot push shots. Dont shoot floaters. TAKE IT AT HIM RIGHT AT THE RIM. If you shoot jumpers Joker is getting the rebound. GO AT HIM. I've never once seen Joker protect the actual rim.
Lakers had huge success with it but LeBron is 40 and AD is fragile -- but when they were doing it JOKER had no answers.
KAT ANT NAZ MCDANIELS and CONLEY need to GO AT HIM.

@aquamarine56 What about them? Jamal is a liability on defense. Everyone has been getting by him. Gordon is a good defender on KAT. Naz & ANT blow by him pretty easily though.
Ant does but Naz Reid doesn't play enough minutes. And Jaden isn't a offensive talent and Kat is soft and don't think at times.
@dre7147 Game 2 NAZ had a lot of minutes (No Rudy) and KAT balled out too, because Denver had to chose which one Joker was going to guard. He can't keep up with either.
I'm curious what adjustments MN makes for game 5. In the weirdest way, Rudy has become a liability in this series. Because Jokers only weakness is he's stuck in the mud and can't guard fast bigs like Rudy & KAT, it's actually better for us having KAT + NAZ on the floor. We saw it in game 2 it was a layup line past Joker.
The problem is, when we have Rudy he clogs the lane and allows Joker rest on defense. Plus, KAT looks better guarding Joker than Rudy for whatever reason. Maybe a stronger base.
Either way, we have many options. Jaden McDaniels scored 28 in a game vs the Suns. That was an adjustment as well. Jaden is a great offensive option when he's included -- when ANT is super aggressive on offense and the balls not moving it affects Jaden the most.
Both teams have adjustments they can make. This next week should be fun.

KAT doesn't have it. He's good one game, bad two games. Terribly inconsistent and out of control. He shouldn't be dribbling into 3 defenders, he needs to shoot 3s to open up the lane. Without KAT scoring 20 + we got no chance
You just have a narrative that you want to stick to. The first 6 playoff games KAT was good to great. Game 3 he was ok but they stopped passing to him and last night he had a bad 1st half

They are not trusting their 1v1 defense, especially Gobert, overhelping too much and giving Gordon all the rhythm he needed. Jokic was passing too much, unlike game 1.

Nugget's game is really passing much the ball. They were stunned during Game 1 and 2, can't pass the ball, and forgot to play.
All the "same old KAT" hate is wild simply because he was instrumental in the most recent 4 playoff wins...
KAT isn't a very consistent player and I think that is what frustrates people. Also, some of the fouls that he commits are so obvious that it almost looks intentional (yes, I know that it is not).
NAZ and KAT both need to shoot 5-7 3s per game.
Jokic says that every next playoff game is the biggest game of their lives.

So simple. Literally up close contested 3s, no dunks or layups allowed. Everything has to force them to do floaters or midrange. Force jokic to play defense EVERY offensive possession. Tire him out, pick n rolls constantly. Like game 1 and 2. Finch is the problem.
We need to feed Rudy early and often! We started going on runs when we got the ball to him!

KYLE ANDERSON:
Did we all forget his 9 rebounds 8 assists, and spectacular defense in game 2?
Lets stop piling on KYLE and call this for what it is. RUDY is a HUGE part to our team -- and not only can Rudy not guard Joker without getting backed under the rim, but Rudy is allowing Joker to REST on defense by not being an offensive threat.
I'm not saying we should do this 'all game long' but ANT NAW KAT NAZ KYLE or aomething similar like game 2.
Jokers ONLY weakness is he's stuck in the mud slow at the rim and offers ZERO rim protection. SPEED is Jokers cryptonite. Go at him. Embarrass him. Tire him out.
Don't let him just shine as an offensive player and hide on defense.
Our defensive lineups are too burdened when Rudy, Jaden, NAW, & Kyle Anderson all can't score during the same period. For game 4 - I'd argue that 11 out of Rudy was acceptable, same with Jalen - how much else can we expect from them? But NAW with 24 minutes and 2 points?!!! Hey dude, you have to be able to score. And Kyle Anderson - its a bad sign if he's even on the court alongside 2-3 other defensive specialists that can't score. The other team can completely focus on ANT, because Kyle won't even try to score.

KAT's offense hasn't been hit or miss until last night. The first place to look for offense is getting KAT open outside the post.
That sequence to end the first half was completely inexcusable. Undisciplined, sloppy, and poor thinking. The mental mistakes are crippling this team and will continue to BURN us if we can’t shape up. WTF was NAW thinking with that rushed inbound pass??? Completely idiotic. We’d win these games if they simply weren’t playing stupid.

That's kind of this team's trademark, playing stupid. I know many of the players were different, but a couple years ago they would have beaten Memphis if they hadn't done so many stupid things.

Nuggets making all their shots + wolves supporting casts didn't show up on the offensive side = wolves loss. It wasn't a bad loss, unlike game 3.

Any coincidence we played our best game when Gobert was out? He’s been awesome this year but the whole playoff narrative about him is starting to get more valid.
He had a team high +/- game 4. He doesn't look great but he wins his minutes.
Not only that. He had 11 pts. On only 5 shots. Had 14 rebounds and at least 5 of them were on the offensive side. Gobert isn't the issue. KAT can't have the game he just had. NAW can't miss 6 shots, and Slo-Mo can't be out on the court when we need points.
The narrative was that he couldn’t guard on the perimeter. Right now he’s just getting cooked in the post by the best player in the world who had 50 pounds on him.

Thank god we've finally got an agreement that Kyle can NOT see the floor in any meaningful minutes... he immediately fouls misses a shot has a to or def breakdown NEVER a positive.... he almost forces more now when he should just get off the ball... can not understand any positives the coaches are seeing to continuously put him out there.... even his emotionality (if that's the word) seems to fluster other guys with him.. If you can only see the negative in this series and can't enjoy the absurd pro-wrestling levels of drama we're going through, including the rise of an absolute superstar and a team struggling to figure out how to put away the defending NBA champs (which they still have a great chance to do), I just think Timberwolves basketball may not be for you.
