I am 67 years old and thought I was a clever sod! You, young man, have shown me just how much I admire the young brains of today! Excellent tutorial! You should be sooo proud of yourself! A HUGE thank you from a grateful old fart in the U.K.!

      That's the old wisdom
Learning from everybody and being humble!
I think that's more valuable overall than just knowing how to work with stuff.
      Learning > Knowing
      Agreed tho perfect job Michael

At that age your brain is a sponge. It could just have easily been sports stats, video game lore or state capitols for this kid.

Me at the start - "What the heck, why is this tutorial done by a middle school kid?"
Me after like a minute - "What the heck, why is this kid better at explaining stuff than literally all of my college professors...?"

    ...I mean...
    I found Fontforge just recently.
I thought, "hey, I'd like to design my own font at some point."
I also thought, "Here. While I have some time, and before I actually get into FF, let me just look up a tutorial to give me a head start."
This was probably the most amazing tutorial I've ever seen on TH-cam.

I followed your advice, downloaded & installed Fontforge onto my Macbook, (which was good advice as I think it's easier to use for newbies like me!) then imported a Roman like TTF font (Crimson) I want to customise the letters. I imported a screenshot of an actual letter (2) into the background. However, I can't resize or move the background and don't see how to do it. Can you advise me how to adjust the background?

Hats off to you young man, proving the adage that if you're good enough you're old enough.
Over the weekend I tried using Birdfont but found the UI was not intuitive. I also found that what few videos there are for it on TH-cam typically lack narration, are poorly made, are too quick and short or don't address my questions.

Clearly, I was not in a good education program in grade-school, back in the '80s. Had anyone asked me to do this level of tutoring of anything, at all, at this child's age, it would have been impossible. I wouldn't have had the vocabulary, the pronunciation, or the knowledge level to be capable of doing anything even remotely like this, even if every tool this child has today had existed back then. This level of skill was not being taught to any child in my school, as it was assumed that none of us were capable of this. Michael Harmon is proof that children are perfectly capable of doing what he's doing here - if treated as that capable, and if given the proper opportunity. Any school faculty/board the doesn't believe in that should be immediately replaced with better people.
