I Got a Brand New Uchida ‘Econ’! But…

  • Let's clear the air first on this one, as this fan had just smoked my fan room real good. This fan is a secondhand Facebook Marketplace find. The previous owner said they hardly used it as a family member of theirs catch a cold everytime the fan is switched on. Their listing said the fan doesn't work, and that they wanted Rp. 400.000 / 28 USD for it. Long story short, I negotiated the price down & got a bargain.
    At first glance, everything looks fine. This fan is basically still in perfect cosmetical condition, plus all of the installation hardware is intact. But once you get it powered on, things start to go south. I suspect there’s a short inside the motor, because when you turn it on downdraft, it draws 3,5 Watts without moving nor humming. But when you switch it up to updraft, something inside the motor fries up & lets out an ozone-y smell. I still understand nothing about the motors on these fans, as the wiring diagram on this brushed brass Kiev is a complete 180 than the diagram on my white Kiev. On this fan the motor seems to be a 3 speed as evident by a single value capacitor and 3 wires going directly from the switch to the motor, while on the white fan the speeds are controlled by a 3 value capacitor. What I’ll most likely end up doing to fix this fan is to just drop this fan off at Maspion’s service center and have them fix it, as chances are this motor isn’t saveable unless I get a fancy ceiling fan motor winding machine.
    I already have some ideas as to where I’m going to use this fan when it’s fully fixed, but time will tell whether that plan will pan out or not.

    I have a similar incident on my 2nd handed Alaska!
    The first time, the fan was normally spin faster like a newer fan (although the fan was recondition). I test that fan with my National F-560A1 regulator and doesn't happened. Next day the fan won't spinning after i replaced with Aftermarket CMCE regulator, so when i pulled the fan, the fan is only humming noise and motor won't running at all.

    Really interesting that the motor on this one has separate windings for each speed (multi-speed motor).
    All the ceiling fans I've seen IRL use single speed motors, with external speed control (capacitors, transformers, etc)
    And at 4:08 I wonder if the run cap spewed its guts

    • @TheFanUniverse
      @TheFanUniverse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found that weird too. I checked the capacitor before sending that fan off to be serviced, and the capacitor looks to be intact.

    It's such a pity, the fan not working? Can't be repaired? I always liked this design with 4 blades. Looks very nostalgic.

    • @TheFanUniverse
      @TheFanUniverse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I suspect the previous owner unknowingly turned the fan on while the motor is saturated with water. I'm still trying to fix it at the moment as I also find the design very calming

    Hi,unfortunatly i couldnt make the video of the fan that ive put new bearings in due to the fact i took the fan to a friend of mine thats got a bearing puller and he messed up the coils of the fan so unfortunatly the fan is trashed now,i dont know anything about rewinding coils and in my small town there is no shop that does that kind of job,but i was lucky enough to find a 1999 ceiling fan that i bought brand new out of its original box with funny enough no bearing problems.

    • @TheFanUniverse
      @TheFanUniverse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man, that's unfortunate. Replacing bearings on ceiling fans does need a lot of care to prevent messing up the windings, and it took me about 4 failed tries to finally learn how to do it properly. You basically have to be patient & never play rough on it.

    Any chance the screws got driven into the motor too far? That may have opened the windings and shorted the fan out

    • @TheFanUniverse
      @TheFanUniverse  วันที่ผ่านมา

      That’s a good theory, but the screws for mounting the blades are relatively short. What actually killed this fan was a roof leak
