The thing is.... if you took Southern's arrangements and gave them to other schools. They wouldn't be able to execute them. The only school I'd say that could attempt to do it in the Swac would be JSU .
@@MCspitta i mean anyone can attempt but to actually play it on the same level as Southern id say the closest would be JSU... Alabama is missing that "mmphh"...
1st song is Beyond and has always been my ish, actually my favorite song ever by the Juke. Southern made me add the original to my playlist and it's one of my faves. Alcorn was good, but Southern showed no mercy here
I wouldn't say Southerns woodwinds are a weakness...when you hear them its magic!!! Their Drumline is one of the more "conservative" ones of the SWAC. They have the skill I'm sure its just the style.
It's different it's a new Orleans thing it's more like a military style drum crops damnly every school in Louisiana has that funky Military Street Beat before they run a drum Cadence
Southern has a Gospel Choir & there are gospel shows w/The Jukebox on their YT Channel. In 2019, when the Jukebox went to California to perform in the Rose Bowl Parade, a smaller number of the Juke performed 5 gospel songs inside the FAME Church. I don't know any of their gospel songs so I didn't find it interesting but I thought that you may want to check it out for your personal enjoyment since you're a gospel drummer. They have performed "Going Up Yonder" at funerals & such. It's one gospel song I know. Were you aware there was a SU Wind Ensemble & SU Symphony?
I tried to find a better purple rain band performance. I watched Morris brown, JSU, Grambling and NSU all were great. But SU is still the best that was straight 🔥.
You may have a point on the woodwinds as a weakness, but as far as the drum line while playing a song, their function is to keep the tempo and to sound like an actual drum set. So that is why you don’t hear them playing a cadence during the breakdown
It’s definitely the nola in us bro we come from the slums we got no choice but to go hard and do something for ourselves ! And that involves everything we do !! 504 to the bone 🦴
Yo! I think ASU should of called the United Nations or UNICEF for how band SU beat them in 2015. Almost want to cover your eyes so you don't have to witness the massacre. If you haven't seen Anthony Grant's YT Channek, check it out. He has the best clips of that battle.
Like I been saying if you give those bands same music arrangement they will not be able to play it. Musicianship is key. If you learn on high school level that’s how you will sound. SU is the goat
2nd SU song you didn't know was "I LOVE LA". YO! Don't talk about the depth of SU's songbook w/o acknowledging they're called THE HUMAN JUKEBOX b/c they perform songs from every music genre! I always thought that "America the Beautiful" was one of SU's best arrangements until I heard "Purple Rain" @ 41:00.
This particular year there was a group from JSU standing on the field in front of Southern talking trash.... all that smoke was really directed at them more than Alcorn.
After that Daft Punk Beyond it was OVER! But what really get me is that all these bands are bigger than Southern but don't have the power. And when it comes to 5th Quarters just listen to each bands first and last songs, Southern band is power from beginning to end. All other bands fade out by the end. if you give the arrangement to other bands it wont sound the same because Southern band director arrange to their strengths. If a section is weak it would mess up the sound. Lastly if you see people holding horns toward the end it usually because they're tired (lips) .

Whoever the arranger is for SU, He could make every HBCU band sound good no matter where he goes. Hell even some D1 schools would be better considering some are playing black music anyway.
THERE ISN'T JUST ONE ARRANGER AT SU. How can you determine who wrote the arrangement? The band leader directing the band is the same one who wrote the arrangement. (former Dir of All Bands) Mr. Nathan Haymer song #1 Daft Punk's BEYOND & Purple Rain; (now Dir of All Bands) Mr. Kedric Taylor "We Are One" and more; and lastly, (former Assoc Band Dir) Brian Simmons. I don't know the name of all of the songs he directed...whoever wasn't Haymer or Taylor. Regardless, SU's arrangers have been famed and well-respected for 50+ years. The school offers classes on arranging. You clearly ARE NOT paying attention. The Juke got its name from playing all genre of music not just "black music". "Jukebox" references this fact. In 2021, they had a 5th quarter against a DCI/PWC band Troy Univ, Alabama. i believe Troy considers itself the hip hop band of white colleges. It was cute & all the MUSIC was good.
