This was the one time that I though there we go, Brent making an actual human connection and making the other person feel good, then goes on and ruins it all with one simple hand gesture
That pause after Dawn stops talking just typifies how apathetic David really is towards his employees as a boss. It's as if he hasn't been fully listening, and when he realizes she's stopped talking, and he knows the cameras are on him he'd better say something lest he make himself look like a complete twit. Genius!
All the Brent movie did was prove how much Steve brought to the table. I think he was good at reigning in Ricky’s sickly-sweet sappy sensibilities that he can’t help but put into all his solo projects. Their joint projects had heart but knew how to keep it reigned in.
I remember reading the scripts for The Office and it said after Dawn's little monologue "David hasn't taken any of it in because his mind has wandered" or something 🤣
It's hard for me to admit this, but i used to be just like David Brent when I was a manager. I used to hold my staff hostage as my audience and make them listen to what I had to say or what I thought was funny. I'm so embarrassed when I look back. The sad thing is that I'd already seen The Office when I was doing it and that still wasn't enough to stop me.
@Richard Horrocks I loved The Office, but I couldn't see that I had some David Brent traits. I guess part of what makes you like David Brent is that you don't realise that you are. Lack of self-awareness?
Maybe they were afraid to have Tim say "sociology" as it would probably have required a hundred takes to get through. He doesn't strike me as the psychology type.
Correct. Even the fact the vast majority of management consultants completely misunderstand Maslow is lost on the profession. The fact Maslow is complete bollocks is almost incidental.
Way I see there's no real tangible skill, like BAs and social science. It helps you see things in certain ways sure which are great for a couple industries. But most of us commenting on psych degrees haven't done them before so :/
@@brodyroper8288 There's no 'real, tangible' skill for a lot of a degrees, many of them are knowledge-based rather than skill-based. And simply having any degree is considered 'bare minimum' by employers these days, so I don't like to think of it as a waste of time :(
Umm........no? Michael truly loved Pam's crappy art work and was sincerely proud of her. He desperately needs to be loved and so offers love indiscriminately. David thinks only of David. It never occurs to him that other people have feelings.
Hate to say it, but Tim was dreaming. If he wanted that psychology degree, he'd find a way to go for it. He was coasting on a more secure job while dangling the psychology degree in front of his nose like a carrot, thinking he'd get around to reaching it some day. If he wanted it bad enough, he'd go for it. Take night classes, take weekend classes, take a risk and cut back on your hours so you can do part time psychology classes. David may be in your face delusional, but Tim was delusional in his own way. He didn't want the degree. He wanted to fool himself into thinking he still had a way out of that job. Same for Dawn. If she wanted to be an illustrator bad enough, there's no such thing as 'too knackered after work.' If you were driven by true passion, you'd make the time and fight through the tiredness. Don't slouch in front of a TV. Get on that sketchboard or whatever software program illustrators from that time used and get to work on making your dream a reality. No one ever said it was going to be easy to follow your dream. She wants it, but she can't be bothered to put in the time. Harsh as it may have been, David actually (and unintentionally) hit the nail on the head when he called it a pipedream. If she's going to treat it that way, then that's all it will ever be. If her passion for that was real, she'd find a way to make it happen.
That's because the US version is just another brash American sitcom. The UK original is in a class of its own with comedy so subtle it's lost on most Americans.
That is because the Office UK is more true to a spoof documentary as I had a boss who carried out exactly the same appraisals as David Brent. they were meant to be 360 degree appraisal where someone would do an appraisal on their colleagues and the only very positive ones my boss would put through to his line manager. LOL
As a European, I can't watch US sitcom "humour". From US "Office", to "Big Bang Theory", to whatever makes/made the USA laugh, it's horribly childish, unfunny, un-written, with 0 subtlety.
To be fair I have not seen much of the US version as I found the lead actor and the one playing Gareth to be seriously overacting. What is normally the difference between good US and good British shows is in the US there seems a desperation in the production group to be 100% sure the audience knows when they should laugh, feel sad or whatever. Whereas Gervais just goes with it and if you don't notice or care about the joke (often within a joke) that is actually what makes it funny.
It's beyond belief how good this show was...Absolute work of genius.
I love the scene even more knowing it took 41 takes for Ricky to close his eyes and point to his seat without laughing.
