    I'm a full laryngectomy (no vocal chords). My implant that allowed me to "talk" has been malfunctioning a lot and I've decided to learn ASL. Your videos have been such an amazing starting point, even for simple one word communication. Thank you so much for how you do you tutorials. You've made starting to learn so much easier. Thank you!

      @@ASLMeredith my son is two and has hearing but I have been learning sign with him. He has a tendency to say he wants a bite bite when he is hungry. How do you recommend to switch to using the term and sign food? Just start saying food right after bite bite instead? We are changing changing vocabulary to match the signs vocabulary so he can understand more terms

      Thanks, Sophia! Glad the descriptions help. That's called a "handshape" -- when you identify the shape of the hand (for any sign) by the shape known for a letter, number, or other special shape. :)

    Its crazy, I came here because I tried to imagine how I'd first naturally express "want" if I were deaf and accidentally coming up with my own signs. I wanted to see how close it would be to a real sign language and it actually coincidentally turned out the same! Except I imagined my hands curling up a bit more at the end (to be fair, if I actually tried it maybe I would have found that I wouldn't curl them as much as I thought)
    I chose 'want' because I thought it'd be such a primitive fundamental sign anyone would inevitably want to express early, and a bare emotion -- and not something starting to get too abstract or something that would be expressed later after already coming up with other signs influencing how you'd want to express with your hands.

    I'm not deaf, but I just started learning ASL (as in JUST). I started learning it because there was concern after my mom's throat cancer returned that she wouldn't be able to speak (thankfully, she still can), but I did want to learn if she couldn't because I still wanted some way to communicate with her (which looking back, she doesn't sign, so it would have been a one way street, but no matter because ASL is such a beautiful language). Anyways, all that to say, I really enjoy these videos. They're really informative, not just on vocabulary, but also grammar.

    Hi Meredith! As always, awesome video!
    I had a quick question about deaf culture. In normal conversation (in English), we tend to "show words" through body movement. So like if you want to say "I dont know" you might shrug and raise your arms in a W position. Or if you're saying "yes/no" you may shake your head. But we dont always say words when doing these things.
    In ASL, are those motions still recognized? Do I have to do the "not-know" sign, or can I just do the shrug? Do I have to sign "yes" or can I just shake my head?
    Thank you!

    • @ASLMeredith
      @ASLMeredith  6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Hi Jordon, great question! Yes -- Deaf people (and other signers) are well aware of the cultural gestures in their country/region, and those would be recognized in ASL conversation. Like with spoken language, those gestures/shrugs may be used on their own (simply shrug, simply nod head) or may be used in combination with the signs (shrug AND sign 'not-know', or sign yes AND nod head).

    Hiya! I was wondering if you have a video on how to sign animals? Oh, and thanks for making these videos! I make some, too! I love how you explain that there are different ways to say the same thing! It really helps when I’m talking to somebody who wouldn’t sign something the same way I do. So thanks!

      Thanks for the kind words and the request! I won't be doing videos that are based on the English alphabet, for a few reasons, the biggest of which is that a video that translates all "A-" words would be incredible long and I could never make it comprehensive to include alllll relevant signs. (I'm not a dictionary, but if you want a dictionary, I recommend a few good ones at aslmeredith.com/resources )

      Hi there! Thank you for the kind feedback! I'm glad you find these videos useful :) and I'll definitely have more videos coming out end of summer and in the fall. As an FYI - the signs for "date" and "dessert" are actually the same! Context of the conversation typically helps you distinguish them. (Some people sometimes fingerspell 'dessert' or sign 'sweets', too.) . Hope this helps!

    I love sign language... I only know a very little bit and I taught my kids signs hen they were babies it helped so much bc they couldn’t talk yet... I started them at 6 months maybe 8... I’m hoping to become fluent but how do u tell the difference between certain signs... I love watching ppl sign and bc they are fluent they not only sign quick but like any language they have ways of saying things ... I’m trying to figure how to say it and the only way I can think is on switched at birth melody told Emmett not to mumble to do sharp proper signing... so many signs look alike when ppl “mumble”

    Hey Meredith, I love your lessons. I am having a difficult time seeing the words because the letters are the same color as your background. Maybe you can try the letters in green or blue to contrast the white and black.

    • @ASLMeredith
      @ASLMeredith  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rozelle, thank you for your feedback! My old open captions (like in this video) are white with a small black outline. I realize it's not ideal and hard to see - as you noticed! That's why my open captions are now (past ~2+years) in dark gray against the white background, and at the top of the screen. Unfortunately I can't go back and change an older video like this one, BUT you can enable closed captions and see the same captions in black/white! Use TH-cam's "CC" option to enable captions on these videos and they'll be much more readable. Hope that helps!

      That's fair, they're similar! Keep an eye on the handshape (D vs 1 - i.e. is the fist open or closed) and the movement (double tap vs one movement inward).

    Hello Meredith, your videos are so wonderful. I am a kindergarten teacher for 3 year-olds, and sign language is the best way of teaching my non-English speakers new words in English. Is it possible for you to make a video with English common class comands: 1) I want to go to the toilet. 2) please sit down 3) Let´s color/paint/cut/glue-verb/paste 4) sign language for crayon, scissors,brush, glue-noun, paint-noun 5) No running/yelling/fighting in the classroom Stuff like that ^_^

    Do the words like, have, need, and want follow the subject-topic sentence structure? Example: I want an apple. Would it be signed apple I want or I want apple? I love your videos and I am learning so much!! Thank you!!😊😊

    • @ASLMeredith
      @ASLMeredith  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep those words can all be used in topic-comment structure !! For your example sentence, either would be accurate, but the first might be more "ASL", and would put the emphasis on the apple.

    Hi Meredith. I went through an interpreter training program and got an Associates Degree in 1993. Unfortunately, my skill still didn't exceed Level 1 at State level. I followed a blue collar career that paid more than what i would have made as an interpreter. Now that I am near retirement in my blue collar field, I still wonder if I should have pursued interpreting. I had a deaf brother (now deceased) and I feel that our pidgen signs from childhood hampered my skill as an interpreter. I'm pretty good at expressing (although I'm slow to think of signs that can have multiple meanings) but terrible at receiving (I have trouble reading signs from people with fat fingers). Nearing retirement in my blue collar job, I often wonder if I should pursue a B.A. in interpreting. Since the Rubella outbreak in the early 60's occurred, I realize that a lot of deaf people are becoming senior citizens and there is a shortage of male interpreters. So you have any advice? I know this is a lot to ask, but I was wondering if you could tutor me through zoom sessions for a fee?

    • @ASLMeredith
      @ASLMeredith  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Leland, how wonderful that you're returning to your ASL skills now. It's possible that your family signs with your brother could have helped and/or also hindered ASL - hard to say. But! You certainly could take up a class or private lessons to restore / improve your signing, if you're looking to pursue interpreting once again. I'm not currently taking on new private students, but I suggest several wonderful Deaf instructors at aslmeredith.com/learn-from-home who do 1:1 online lessons and tutoring! Perhaps see if one of them might meet your needs? Also www.trixbruce.com/ does workshops and webinars for interpreting skills, specifically; I'm not sure whether she does 1:1 tutoring. Hope this helps!

      Thank you both! Yes, you could sign BUY -- to indicate that you bought a car, "got" a car. If someone gifted it to you, then you'd use the sign GIFT (as a verb) or GIVE. There *is* a general sign for "GET", but it feels a little lax for something as momentous as a car!
