YES. I second this. Super Paper Mario is an underrated masterpiece that deserves more attention
It 100% is. It is one of my favorites (if not my favorite) to this day! I was genuinely surprised by its ending and how deep the story was. It had some goofiness but that game was DARK at points. I loved it.
Basically my first thought when he started that level was "hey the backgrounds remind me of the final world of Super Paper Mario" so I was overjoyed to hear him mention it too.
I played through it last year, it was a treat! Might be the best story I've experienced with a Nintendo game

I've come to realize that 90% of DGR's deaths come when he's trying to speed his way through a level.
I sit in front of my monitor going: "what the hell are you doing, Dave?"
Trying to speed through without paying attention to what's going on. Don't rush. It doesn't make you faster, just more error prone.
This game shows that Super Mario Maker 3 could be an absolutely insane leap over SMM2

Dave needs to realize that the graphics in the bottom of the title screen for each level tells the rules of the level.
Was like the first thing I noticed about this game. I wouldn't say attention to detail is this guy's strong suit.

i prefer ice flower because it not only freezes your enemy (which in turn means you can most likely kill them cause you just ground pound on them) but you also get an option to use it as a projectile to kill other enemies
Mario multiverse is legit if Nintendo actually put the work in
I definitely prefer the fire flower over the ice flower 90% of the time except in New SMB Deluxe where your ice flower freezes the enemy and you can pick them up and throw them. It Takes out dry bones which is really nice when you're in a castle level and they are very annoying.
Turning enemies into icecubes is the best!

I actually prefer the Ice Flower over the Fire Flower, not only because of the extra platforms it provides (I can almost get that star coin! I just need a stool!), but also because in some styles you can pick up the frozen blocks and hurl them at enemies like a shell.
It is not "in some styles" creators can allow it in every style.
And I think Ice Flower can be a hindrance in some circumstances, not destroying an enemy immediately can make progress slower.
@@dimwarlock Good point. I was thinking more in terms of official Nintendo games, and I do agree that ice flower users need to have some foresight to use the flower properly.

Super Paper Mario is a very underrated and underappreciated game in the Paper Mario series. Love to see the love for the game in that second level.
This game is effing amazing to look at. I hope it turns out to be a success and a big deal in the SMB community.

I'd be happy if it remained closed and private even after beta so that Nintendo aren't in such a hurry to shut it down, not being a commercial threat, and we can just enjoy it on TH-cam and Twitch through our favourite Mario/2D platformer streamers.

Apparently a fanmade platformer with Waluigi has been playable for something like 20 years now. The notion that Nintendo shuts down every fan game seems to be quite overexaggerated.

I would love to see Dave make a level or two using his experience from Mario Maker, as well as checking out all the possibilities with the Multiverse!
In challenge mode, 1ups do not count when you collect them so your lives never increase.
I like the ice flower over the fire flower because smashing the frozen enemies is so satisfying and having enemies turn into platforms is useful. Also, it brings a nostalgic feeling because New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the second Mario game I have ever played.
Also, the ice flower can kill, you just have to ground pound or throw them into a wall.

I prefer the Ice Flower to the Fire Flower. Not only do I prefer cold to heat, but I just think it's more fun to freeze enemies than simply get rid of them.
I've always liked the Ice Flower better because you get projectiles in the form of the frozen enemies. Also, go replay 5-1 in NSMBW with an Ice Flower: it is OP against those long-legged bramble enemies.

1 Ups don't work in Challenge Mode, but they do in level select.
Also, there are game styles I haven't seen you play yet, including Candy Arcade.

fyi, the walljump mechanic started as a glitch in SMB1, where if you could slightly clip into a block, you may be able to wall-jump with that. Nowadays, wall jumping is a common videogame intended mechanic, but not many people know or talk about that wall jumps was a glitch in SMB1

I prefer Ice flowers because if you are trying to test something out you can freeze an enemy and use it as a block to reach a higher place, etc.

But yea, if you press START during a level you can see what abilities are enabled for that specific level. Like walljump, swimming, pick up, or itembox, for example.

The level screen tells you your ability
Just so you know, you can play as Mario, Luigi or Toad. Mario's normal, Luigi jumps higher but is slippery, and Toad has a lower jump height (unfair)

I prefer the Ice Flower. There is a few cons to the Ice Flowers, sure. Like how it only bounces twice or how it shoots kinda high and then it looses momentum, but the frozen enemies are satisfying to grab and toss around.
This game is so cool. Really one of the best fangames I've seen. Except for one little detail. The fact that the average person can't play it. I mean, seriously?

The second level reminds me of the Virtual Boy mario games but not in eye-bleeding red. It even has the same foreground/background feel.
I'm surprised that there's no virtual boy settings or powerup in the official SMM games.

DAVE! You're too used to Mario Maker! You have a backup item storage in some of the levels here!
Ice Flower all the way. Freeze the enemy and yeet them to bowl their comrades over. You also get an extra platform to boot for that height. If I do recall it also provides a steppingstone for bodies of water if you freeze an enemy in water.
I prefer Fire Flower for the same reason as DGR.

Also, Dave, don't forget, what Mario has in his moveset of actions he can do, is not tied to game styles in Mario Multiverse like Mario Maker restricts you to do. Stuff like wall jumps, and backup powerup slot, are determined by what the level creator permits with that level. Furthermore, what characters you can play as are permitted by the level creator's choices, Mario Multiverse gives tons of freedom to the level creators, as opposed to Mario Maker games made by Nintendo, who restricts what you can and cannot do in a level based on the game style. And in Mario Multiverse, each of the 4 playable characters as seen in SMB2 USA, retain their abilities they had in that game, in Mario Multiverse. Mario Multiverse is a completely different level maker than the official Mario Maker 1 and 2 games, don't compare it to Mario Maker and think of it as it's own game. It annoys the heck out of me when you don't use the powerup in your backup power up slot in levels that permit it, when you need it. So please Dave, pay attention to not only the level, but also wherever you have a power up in your backup powerup slot or not
