No matter how many times people sing this songs , no one will ever be as good Thomas Hampson was in this performance. It is superlative..Transcendent...

Wolfram Rieger is the most extraordinary pianist for this repertoire I ever heard. Once I listened to both in Vienna Musikverrein. When Hampson aknowledged him after the performance everybody went crazy, and with good reason.

Uno dei pochi baritoni in grado di proporre tutta la profonda essenza e sapienza chiaroscura della musica di Mahler!

Thomas Hampson is at his best when giving a recital. He is also an excellent teacher. If anyone has not watched his master classes then they are well worth viewing.
His views on the importance of the arts are exactly what needs to be heard today.

Thank you so very much, Thomas Hampson and Wolfram Rieger, for your music. What a masterpiece of a concert. Bravi, both of you, and of course Gustav Mahler for his musical genius and extraordinary creativity. And also the public, who embarked on such a wonderful journey, but far from easy to take in. Bravi to ALL OF YOU!

Hampson and Rieger are a superb paring. For recordings of Mahler lieder, there are none who I enjoy more. Hampson was at or near his zenith here; mind blowing artistry, technique and vocal beauty.

Thank you, Mr Hampson and Mr.Rieger. This was incredibly beautiful, peaceful and truthful. It is no surprise that there are these 20 seconds of peace between the last note and the applause... "We must allow ourselves to be awakened to God..."

A simply wonderful recital. It has often been said, as Rieger notes, that if you wish to understand Mahler, then listen to his songs because they are at the heart of his music.

I am actually convinced that the perpetum mobile in ,,das irdische leben" is something like a spinning wheel of fate (in Bohemian/slavic folklore - Mahler was born in Bohemia - there are fairies of fate named Sudičky, that are usually portrayed with a spinning wheel, spinning ones thread of fate). The children is a man crying for help and the mother is fate itself always saying ,,it will get better, dont worry", but the help doesnt come and the suffering ends only in death - the end of the song. Thats why you should sing the mother completely emotionless, or even rebuking (because the fate doesnt really care about you, its more probable that you will be chastized for your dissatisfaction with the state you are in). I think mr.Hampson does better job in his newer performance with wiener virtuosen overall, which is the peak performance of Wunderhorn songs today in my opinion. Still very helpful to hear the songs with piano, thanks for uploading :)
