The hump of the bull is said to have manifested at Kedarnath, where the temple was built at the spot where Shiva is believed to have appeared as a Jyotirlinga, an illustration of cosmic light. The Pandavas were also said to have pleased Shiva by doing penance in Kedarnath.

Another legend says that twin sages named Nar and Narayan asked Shiva to live on Earth permanently at Kedarnath as a reward for their long meditation. It's also believed that Shiva meditated at Kedarnath for a long time, and the temple marks his presence from ancient times.
