I was able to buy a 400 that was owned by our neighbor. I remember it being delivered by the dealer in 1955. I drove it in the field working for them. The family owned it for 67 years. It has 56 hours on a new 450 overhaul. I am in process of restoring as we speak. We were grain farmers and when I was a kid, we had 4 Ms. This 400 was big deal for me then, and is still my favorite Farmall tractor. You have a real gem. GREAT JOB
Grandpa bought our 400 new in 55 and has 20,000 hours and a couple rebuilds under her belt. Such an amazing tractor that's gonna stay in the family for at least another lifetime.
My grandfather purchased a farmall 400 in 1955. He liked it so much, he purchased another one in 1956. We still have both of them. He traded an M and two plows for the '56. $4260.00. We're about to restore the '56 like you have done.
Good old girl in great shape, nice video, I've owned a bunch of these old international and Farmall tractors, and if u take care of them they go forever just like old John Deeres ,super reliable and strong, Cheers
Man that is one nice 400! About the same time frame as you bought years ago, we showed/ pulled tractors. We would buy rebuild and restore mainly the 2 cylinder JD's. I did have one Farmall H at one point. Back when we pulled antique tractors ( before big money got involved) it was always hard to compete with the farmalls and the Oliver's! More cubic inches was hard to handle, but we held our own for many years! Nice to see it restored, looks amazing. We finally sold off the last of ours in 2020 to buy more field friendly tractors for the reclaim of the farm. Do miss them from time to time, although I do have an oliver 770 wide front gas that gets a workout in our process. Thank you for bringing us along, just catching up on some older content! Thank you sir!
Thanks. I thought about getting into tractor pulling, but I figured it was going to be expensive and time consuming for me. So I started farming instead. Haha!. My 400 is my favorite tractor. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Farming can be expensive to, but you make some money back selling crops. Start up costs were a little hard for me, but I bought old equipment and fixed it up. Now I'm able to upgrade some of my equipment. It all takes time and the farm is my happy place. Have a good week. It snowed here last night so I'm going to go clean up.
Dad and I have a 400. Changing it to 12v and alternator and also installing a carb kit with some governor tweaking rejuvenated the old gal. (Having an 80 year old retired IH mechanic on the phone was awesome learning all the little tricks. Mechanic said if you have everything adjusted right you can take off in road gear with hardly any throttle.) Dad told me the story a neighbor farmer had with his back then brand new 400. It's hilly around where we live and the neighbor pulled out onto the road with a full load of hay. He didn't know the T/A would freewheel pulled back so he had a hair-raising experience barreling down that steep hill. It's the same hill my Dad taught me when I was old enough to just flick our M or 400 into neutral and let gravity take you for nearly half a mile-enough to take you over two smaller hills.
Thanks for sharing your stories of yours dad's 400. I glad some of the tractor's and the farm is still in the family. Enjoy your 400. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Excellent video, i grew up on a dairy farm south of Rockfall, Illinois, my dad had a Super C, an M , & a 400 identical to this one, & they were all great tractors but the 400 some how got a crack in the block, but it held up the whole time my dad farmed, my brother still has the C , he has a Super M , & bought a different 400 & restored them, they all run great to this day, my dad is now 92 yrs old, my brother bought the farm and more land, he has big equipment but wants to keep the fire burning with the original way we grew up as kids, i watch a lot of these videos because the stories are similar to when i was growing up .... 👍
Thanks for watching and commenting. My 400 is my favorite tractor. That's pretty cool you grew up running farmall's. Glad to hear the farm is still in the family and some of the tractor's are to. Enjoy your time with your dad, I hope he is still in good health. Enjoy your 400 there are tough old tractors.
92 that's great. Is his health pretty good? The owner of the farm where I have my equipment will by 90 at the end of March. She is doing pretty good for her age. She still mows some of her grass and takes care of her flowers gardens.
Great video! That is one beautiful tractor! You did an excellent job restoring it! It would be very interesting what the HP is now with that piston kit. Thanks for the walk-around! Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Your welcome, I would like to know that HP to. The local IH club as a tractor show in October and they have a M and W dino there. Some year I'll take my tractor and dino it.
Nice job, we had a 55 , 400 growing up, great tractors, ours got a crack in the block though, until then, it has done a lot of hard work, great tractors 👍
@@VintageFarm1086 those old 400's, M's & Super M's & even the Super C's all were very durable , made to last good old tractors, i grew up on all of them, they will be part of my life forever , no doubt , Thankyou for the great video 👍👍👍 i grew up south of Rockfalls,Illinois by Tampico,Illinois on a dairy farm..
What a beautiful tractor. I don’t have much knowledge of IH’s as I grew up around a 3020 Diesel JD. I know my dad actually traded a narrow front IH in 71 when he bought the 3020 new, but we only have one pic of that IH somewhere. I’m eager to learn about your channel so I’m going to subscribe. I’ll take a tour of your videos. Thank you for subscribing to my channel. I invite you to tour my channel too so you can get to know my equipment and what I do here in Middle TN. Thank you sir!
My uncle has the '54 gas 400 my grandpa bought new from the dealer. My uncle broke the bolster and put a wide front end on it. We have a home movie of that tractor arriving on a truck. My dad had a Diesel 400 I'd like to find, but it was sold at his farm auction 35 years ago.
I have a farmall 400 that was my Grandfather's. It has a 6 volt system that has all the issues you mention. Where can I get the info on converting it to 12 volt?
I fabricated the alternator bracket myself. I run a GM se10 alternator with a Dodge resistor going to the coil. I had a friend help we it. But now I think you can get a kit from Steiner tractor parts to do the conversion. There maybe some videos here on TH-cam on how to do it. I know you can goggle and find wiring diagrams for it. Good luck, you will not regret converting it to 12 volts.
Man that 400 must get loud when you load the engine! Our 400 has a slight exhaust leak below the muffler and it'll drown out the noise of a 560 working next to it.
