Wonderful. I just wish the filming was horizontal so I could see the adjustment of the tension at the beginning of the process... but from zero to "finished" hat in 4 minutes eight seconds... wow!! Thanks for sharing.
It is a Willcox & Gibbs. The company was active from 1857 to 1973. The head office was in New York. It was quite a large company and they produced beautiful chain stitch sewing machines. The model in the video is probably from before the 2nd world war (!), because after the war hats got out of fashion and the special hat machines like this one (with a tiny arm) weren't sold any more. The machine could also be much earlier, because they were so good, that the design stayed the same for decennia. The model of the machine from 1878 (I had one), was still exactly the same in the 1930ies. The machine are still for sale, especially in the US. However these are mostly domestic machines and not the more specialized hat-making type. The latter are more scarce, but if you keep looking, you can still find one. By the way, the Germans made more or less the same machines too. That would be the Dresdenia machine brand. Grossmann is another brand. All hat making machines.
Can someone help me. I am try to transition from to the brim...I pushed the hat up towards my machine and that is not working. I watched over videos and they turned hat inside out to do the brim. Do you change how much you overlap the straw when you are sewing the transition from crown to brim? Thanks
